Having one host disconnected is certainly a reasonable use-case (for the laptop that's not there), so it makes sense to be able to draw power from either bus.

I may not have been entirely serious previously :) but the switches I have will work when just powered from a single host.

A Star Tech switch as linked above from the bay of thieves for less than half of the price elsewhere has duly arrived.  The box had been opened but the contents look to be complete including two thunderbolt cables.

I shall set it up and try it over the weekend.
