1000k events
« on: 17 August, 2014, 07:06:53 pm »
Why are 1,000k events so few and far between?
And why is it, when one is available it's AAA maxed out?
Could someone create a regular flat-ish calendar 1,000k that I could ride BRM style in 2016 please....

Muchus Thankus  :smug: ;D

Doo
I dunno why anybody's doing this!

where would you like it to go?

They're fairly imple to put together
where you have a concentration of power in a few hands, all too frequently men with the mentality of gangsters get control. History has proven that. Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.

There may be a Bristol 1000km event in June next year, as a prep ride for PBP.  If it gets going, it will be 3 x 333km (approx) loops starting/finishing in Bristol and will be more about the varied scenery rather than AAA points.
At present this in very much in the early stages of consideration and if possible, will be posted in the AUK calendar.

Doo

The St Germain 1000 from Normandy would have suited you.

Edinburgh-Preston-Edinburgh was relatively flat and a loop around either would make a good 1000km x-rated event that could be achieved by simply joining up existing options.

As could a joining a few x-rated events together that start at the same venue.

Then there are perms such as Centre Tour, Eastern Tour or Preston-Aberdeen-Preston, that all look flat and could be achieved by a group of like minded people.

But I agree about the AAA.  A nice option is to go abroad and complete something like the St Germain 1000 which was a great ride with nil AAA.

Do we all get to camp in your front garden?

Anyways Doo, if you want flat then come to Jutland but beware the wind.

I've been thinking of possibilities for some time. Unlikely to get anything finalised before 2016, though there may be a permanent earlier. Current thinking is Exeter to Tywyn and back by devious routes. I like rides that go somewhere, so no twiddles or loops.

Hmm, Exeter to the edge of Snowdonia, will it be hilly?  ;D

Mr Beard, you know me, no unnecessary hills. Salisbury, Ludlow and /Welshpool might feature as controls.

Mille Alba wasnt deliberately hilly, but still had 12,500m climbing.

Preston - Aberdeen - Preston would be flat,

Ive always thought that something like York - Aberdeen - York would be a good basis for a UK 1000km (or even a 1200km) event.

EDIT : Somebody who will not be named actually emailed me earlier today to ask if Mille Alba is running in 2016.  Im not planning on replying.

One problem would be that you can't just jump in and organise a 1000km event. Need to start smaller and work up.

Could of course plan a DIY.

Why not just write a letter to El Supremo? I seem to recall he's organised a few 1,000k - and up - events in the past. I bet he could resurrect one for you.
Could of course plan a DIY.
If you planned a DIY it would not be BRM, which is what the OP was asking for.
Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

In fact, I've been out of audax events for the past few months as I've been touring, but wasn't he going to do a 1,000k event last year or the year before?

You missed this bit out - which was the post that I was replying to (not the OP)

Arry-R was suggesting that Doo organise a 1000km event himself, I pointed out a problem with this - as stated in the organisers handbook 2.1.2

Please quote me in context or don't bother!  >:(

ps- I don't know who Doo is and may have wrongly assumed that he has no experience at organising.

The OP asked for 'BRM style' and not specifically BRM.

The Crackpot is a 1000k event I have always wanted to see back in the Calendar and I had the chance of riding it with Toofypeg last year however Real Life has a way of getting in the way.

Who knows though - maybe it will re-emerge in the future

Unless that's a different Crackpot than the one of yore and legend, it probably fails Doo's request:

If it made the calendar in 2016 I might have learnt how to ride up hills again by then

There still is the Borders of Belgium next month. Starts conveniently near the coast. Large chunks of very flat terrain mixed with the Ardennes in the middle.

I suspect that would be 'rolling' given that LEL 2013 was lumpier than the previous version, possibly due to the guiding hand of Mr Undualtes in the route creation  8)

This was my first ever 1000. The Great Eastern. Still available as a permanent. Noel Simpson used to run it in PBP years.
