the cone seems to be pressed onto the axle as in the image below. are the cones replaceable (and where do i get one) or do i need a new axle?

Isn't it just a standard Campag cone, which should be available as a spare? I'm pretty sure we have a spare cone lying around if you can't find one.

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

Sigma sport is pretty good for Campag spares

Cheapest I found the cone inc postage recently was Ribble though Sigma look to be a few pence cheaper at the moment. I've bought from i-Ride before, but IIRC they've got a £50 threshold for free postage and highish charges otherwise.

Digging out the notes I made (Chorus hub), I've got the Campag part number as HB-RE022, same as Fulcrum R1-006. Also in a kit as Campag HB-RE100 or Fulcrum RS-100 - not sure what other bits you get though.

I've got a Fulcrum axle hanging about at home that may have a compatible cone.  I'll take a look this evening.

thank you, if i understand it correctly the same cone is used in fulcrum 0, 1 and 3 wheels, and also several campag wheels. i will probably order one from sigmasport, it's only that they don't have it in stock ready to ship (will take a week to get it from their warehouse).

p.s. the cone wasn't pressed on as i initially feared, it was only stuck - and released after a few knocks
