.... I followed some of Le Tour -  we took a few days holiday to follow a few of the stages.
.... I spent nearly as much time in the UK as I did in Europe.
.... I took time off work between Christmas and the New Year.

2011 was the year that:

I nearly went broke due to travel costs - diesel went up nearly 30% but its OK, inflation's on target (my arse!)

Got introduced to Tiermat, Crinkles, Crusty, SlowCoach, Deano, Linda, Clarion, Butterfly and probably lots of other forummers whom I've forgotten to include.

My Dad died.

I got a new job - which is shit . . .

 . . . and got rid of the overdraft - which isn't.

Went on a Tiermat Random Evening RideTM which was great, chips 'n everyfink.

Got a saddle infection - which wasn't.

Had a great day out with #1 son, Tiermat and TipTop

Tripled the mileage I'd done in 2010 (by doing three bike rides - but that's statistics . . .)

Lots to remember but one I'm glad to see the back of.

This year..
- Had a fantastic time at the Argus tour. I so want to do that ride again.
- Pulled my back in June, spent a long time off the bike (mostly apart from the 2 mile amble to work and back) and am only just starting to get fitness back :(
- Got the front cover of Nature in July
- Handed a clubmate a cheque for just under 3k after the calendar sales
- Met Kim
- Learned an awful lot about a number of trivial things
- made some people happy, even if only for a little while.
- probably pissed off some people too - Sorry :(
- Didn't go to the York Rally for the first time in a long while.

I caught a chest infection which knocked me down for ten days, and reminded me that whilst it's nice to pay the bills, work isn't everything.
I met Mr Gates and Charlotte and Kim, and had a silly bike adventure which included lumps of rain and dirty burgers.
My dad died, which reminded me that whilst it's nice to pay the bills, work isn't everything, and time is short.  :'(
I swapped a job I was good at, but which demanded 50 hours a week with no prospects and management I could have cheerfully shot, for one with a bit of a pay rise, 37.5 hours a week, and a feeling that I should have done this years ago.   :)

Some good, some bad, and generally I've been not liking 2011.  I'm hoping that the New Year will be better.

Didn't get the big promotion and job move.
Moved house, 9 months after putting the house up for sale, but to somewhere really nice.
Miss Dan the Younger started school.
Job went smoothly, though can't top DM's front cover.
Dad's health improved.
Did a FNRttC and met various forum types.
Joined a photography club.
n+2 occurred - including our first tandem.

... I rode 'bents less.  :-[
... I rowed less.  :-[
... I did more overnight $Silly_Bike_Adventures. 8) (Though I didn't wear sunglasses.)
... NOTHING HAPPENED on Cannock Chase.
... I learnt to pull levers in Bodmin General signalbox, and have a certificate to prove it, and a requirement to do 15 turns of duty there during 2012.  I look forward to welcoming YACFers to the signalbox when I'm working there.

The Orange Bling was ordered in November 2010, but did not arrive until May.  It has since become the mainstay of my fleet.  And now with added Orangeness (cables, wires, zipties).

My heartiest contrafibularities to those who found lurrrrve this year (Arch/MFWHTBAB, Kirst/Bobb and others below the radar).  Be excellent to each other.

I got made redundant   >:( then  ;D ;D ;D when the reality dawned.  Debt free, going to spend February in New Zealand, and basically am somewhat unconcerned about many of the things I used to be concerned about. Generally in my life, I've found that the toast invariably lands butter side down, but I think this is changing.  My redundancy was well timed, at exactly the right age, I have escaped with a good deal and a pension, and a new much lower paid, less responsible job.

My cycling has been a gross embarrassment, I've hardly done any.  I think thats the only potential resolution to make for 2012.

As for Lurve, well I think I've had that all the time... haven't I, Dear?  (apparently the answer is yes).

And you lot have been here for the few dark moments.  Thank you.

2011 was the year that I

...became a home owner

...became a kitten servant

...went into non-legally-aided law, fairly promptly decided to get out again

...became 30

...didn't do nearly enough riding  :-[

...learned that I'm going to be an aunt next June! :D

Work cast a bit of a shadow over 2011.  Roll on 2012.  :)

Good things:
I managed two solo cycle tours: Hook of Holland to Roscoff and Erskine to home.
Mrs G and I had a wonderful Scottish cycling holiday involving whisky and islands.
I cycled to and from work most days.
I built one new bike and got rid of two.
We hosted a lovely YACF camping weekend.
The family is usefully employed and moderately solvent.
My eldest daughter got married to a good guy.
My other daughter got engaged to another good guy.
Mrs G had a two-week holiday in New Zealand

Tougher things:
My lovely MiL succumbed to pancreatic cancer
Mrs G was hit by drivers twice whilst cycle-commuting. (Hi Viz, helmet, cycle lane etc, etc...). The driver who broke her bike and elbow didn't stop.
Our son and family had to move out of Christchurch after the February earthquake.
Their daughter (our granddaughter) was born, traumatically, a few days later.
My body mass is as bad as it was at the end of 2010.
Work is tougher and more demanding now than ever before - partly because of cost-cutting and colleague redundancies.

2012 will be good for us, I'm sure.

I got a super-duper special award from a YACF member.

And the campaign was successful.

Cycling. It has been a very enjoyable year managing to do over 10,000 miles for the 4th year in a row. Highlights were many but climbing both Col du Galibier and Alpe d'Huez within the space of 3 days gave me a lot of satisfaction.

Downside, I lost 2 very good friends. Jim a friend for over 40 years finally in December succumbed to the cancer that had plagued him for the previous 18 months. And as many of you know Lesley got killed while cycling in France.
Most people tip-toe through life hoping the make it safely to death.

became 40
rode JOGLE with a very good friend
left my job, and after a shitty 9 months leading up to it have been delightfully unemployed for 3 months
lost 2 stone
lost my last grandparent

on balance, a good year and 2012 should be even better ;D

I turned 50, and cycled to the top of Mont Ventoux (twice)

The first time I phoned Mrs Rapples in Blighty from the top, (I was the first of our lot to get there).  I was quite emotional.

In chronological order:
Finished the Niederrhein 600 at the 3rd try, previous 2 times I DNFed (June)
I finally stopped studying (by getting a BSc) (Aug)
Did my first PBP, and cycled there and back (Aug)
Turned 30 (lots of people mentioning 30/40/50/60 I notice) (Oct)
Cycled more than I think likely ever again before pension (>18000km) (Dec)
Organised my first audax ride (Dec)

Seems like a pretty good year this way.
Forgive me Father, for I have sinned. It has been too many days since I have ridden through the night with a brevet card in my pocket...

Be glad to see the back of it for lots of reasons, roll on 2012.

On balance, +1.  Too exciting (and not necessarily in a good way) by half.
