Went out for a spin yesterday to join up two tarmacked bits I had to do about 1 mile on gravel road and about a mile on bridle way. I manged probably about 95% of it on the bike. Only time I walked was when I hit a ford with a gate next to it and when joining the bridle coming out from a farm strait up on to the fields.

The biggest issue with going off road on a 'bent is that when I build up speed and hit a bump, you get thrown around a bit, early doing bunny hops. But if you go at a easy steady speed, it is remarkably stable and easy to ride rough bits. I only had to stop twice and both times was because I lost traction, hard pumped road tires even at 1.5", are not the best for comedy, well then again, kinda is :)

First time I saved the drop by putting a foot down, scooted forward past the rough and off I went again. Second time I had to step right off as it happened fast and I couldn't unclip in time to get a foot on the ground fast enough to stop the drop. Let the bike fall, caught the fall of my body with my arms and leg and manged not to roll or fall into the only nettles on that bit of bridle way.

Time to find more off road bits around here and get some cycle cross tyres for the bike :)

The other bike was an equally inappropriate Specialized Tarmac.

A spot of fun on Isle of Lewis, still have to get some cycle cross rubber. So much fun riding off road on a bent.

Funny enough the photos are when the track was at it's best, the photographer was too busy staying up right on the "good" bits, thanks Peli :)

Short but steep with a deep gully in the middle:

View from the top:

Coming down that on a fully laden bike with no suspension and a rider with minimal off-road skills would be quite demanding, not to say an invitation to injury, wouldn't it?

Yes it was as boggy as it looks, and further down near Beal Barn, we had the hawthorns to contend with:

Some great stuff on here, thanks!

@ Pingus

Those would both be classified roads around Rochdale.

Cadbury Camp Lane. Good for the Romans Iron Age Celts but too stony for me (and a lot steeper than it looks).

Ah, I missed that, well done.  We did the route again in June and I had forgotten how good the descent from Villard Notre Dame to where the tunnels start was.  Not too steep but lovely and twisty, if you have a bike which handles well at speed (Fred is brilliant) you can really chuck it round the corners.  Disc brakes mean you can brake at the last minute too which adds to the fun.

I have some brilliant Go Pro footage which I must get round to editing.

Well, HERE IT IS!.  I haven't got the hang on editing yet so the early scenes of us faffing about might not be of too much interest.

That^^ looks rather lovely.

There were at least two lanes on yesterday's Border Castles audax in Herefordshire and Monmouthshire which would qualify for COR except that they were technically roads and had remnants of tarmac visible between the jagged holes and gravel. Perhaps we need a new category, Comedy Off-Tarmacing.

Splendid weekend near Berwick this Easter, including some adventurous bits. Follow the NCN towards Wooler, methinks, saves on map bending, in keeping with the relaxed ride attitude of the day. And then the earth disappeared from in front. Along with the proper civilised surfacing. After some consideration, and some crossing of rabbit's foot etc. that the other end wasn't the same:

And a bit further on, a couple of hairpins with added plummet:

The riverside ride at the bottom was in fact very pleasant (river Till) - and finished in Etal next to the castle, without the hairy hairpin gradient. Saw a couple of goldeneye ducks for the first time; I had to look them up tonight to identify.

An added bonus was the Lavender Tearooms. I had some lavender cake, different and nice.

Etal is a lovely place. Tea rooms provide what seemed to me to be the largest tea cakes in the UK.
