Butane or is it propane cylinder smoker.
« on: 20 March, 2017, 07:36:36 pm »
I have a large yellow gas cylinder which I want to make a smoker out of ( not a bong type smoker ).

I've had the tank upside down and opened the valve to let the last of the gas dregs out and now want to cut it open with an angle grinder. To prevent a minor mishap ( explosion in the garden) I was going to fill the tank with water first and empty it.

Would that stop me exploding ?

Cutting a tank full of water strikes me as a bit dodgy. Filling it with water will expel the residual gas, which is all that's needed.  It won't refill when you empty the water out.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Now filled with water, purged and emptying on the deer hoist.

I reckon that should do the trick. There was a surprising amount of gas coming out when I filled it with water, so lucky I had the nous to hit the adjustable wrench with a wooden mallet and not my handy framing hammer when unscrewing the valve.

I've got two cylinders, so the other is going to be a BBQ/hot smoker on its side with a hinged lid and stand. I need some more deer and a few fish, so I'm off for a spot of Sea Trout fishing tomorrow.

I'd be interested in the progress of the project. Not that I have a BBQ addiction, no, not at all.

OK, still in one piece and the BBQ is progressing nicely.....

Grinding, marking out and cutting.

Now I need to find a convenient welding apparatus and a bit of mesh for the grill.

The plan is to have a permanent grill in the bottom and use the other half as a lid with the option for a second grill in it.
