Plant(s) for my bedroom
« on: 25 September, 2010, 11:55:18 am »
I've just had my bedroom redecorated. Everything is lovely, shiney and new. It could do with some more colour though, other than the blue of the paint, bedding, light shades and curtains. And the oak colour of the floor and furniture.

So I want a plant or two. What would be good in a bedroom? It faces north, so doesn't get much light. I'm also a bloke so am extremely likely to mistreat them  :P

What will look nice and not die within a week? And what sort of plants do chicks dig?!

Edit: I've successfully grown chillies on the window ledge in a previous abode, but that faced south and got plenty of sun. I bet a Venus fly trap would be cool, but dead very quickly....
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

Surely, once you've got as far as luring her to your bedroom, she won't be concerned by your choice of plants. Unless it's hot botanists that you're rutting for.

I'm not growing cannabis. A mate of mine did that and it stank the whole house out, not just his bedroom!

A cactus would be quite cool. How easy are they to not kill?

I have peace lilies - spathiphyllum - in my bedroom. They do fine, and it's easy to tell when they need watering because they go all floppy. That's the only floppy thing I'll tolerate in my bedroom, I can assure you. *stern look*

If you are near an IKEA go and buy 3 or 4 of their small cheap plants...whichever one lives is destined to be your planty companion  ;)

How about a life size, nude photo of me, sweetie?   :-*

Seriously, cacti can be tempramental buggers.  As long as you've got lots of light, and the bedroom is relatively warm, I'd suggest orchids.

Why do you link yourself with a cactus?  ;)

I would recommend a spider plant for being definitely unkillable. The more you neglect it, the more babies it will have.

Something more colourful on a north facing window sill I would buy a silk lilly or something that you never have to water  ;)

Something about a little prick?

bobb, I have a plant which was tiny when I got it and is now absolutely enormous. I don't know what it is, I got it from the Exotic Plant Shop before it shut down, and the woman told me it was something or other from the pea family. It seems to be pretty much unkillable, so if you want cuttings, I can send you some. My jewel orchid seems to thrive on neglect too - it's flowering just now.

OMG they're sending flowers to each other now.

Unkillable plants include spider plants, dragon trees (dracaena) and the legendary "cast iron plant", aspidistra.

You need a nice plant if you're going to seduce women.

I'm buggered then - my chilli plants generally live in my bedroom, as if I see them starting to wilt I'm more likely to give them a drink. :)

There's also the obligatory cacti, a ficus tree (ficus benjamina, I think) and a rather nice potted palm. I like miniature palm trees, but they do require a lot of sun.

I dunno about this, sometimes they don't even notice the (dead) plant because their attention is elsewhere :)

I've always fancied the "succulent" ones that you see growing as little mini-bonsai-tastic trees in Chinese takeaways.  Never found out the name but let me know how you get on if you try them and what they're called!

Don't know what sort chicks would dig, have you tried them out in the hen-coop yet?
