Many years ago I was spending Christmas at the in-laws in Germany. Bad weather was forecast, and much piss was extracted about the BRITISH inability to cope with a few inches of SNO. Imagine my joy when, on Christmas Eve, I espied on the anbaric television a motorway clogged with SNO-boundtraffic in both directions, as far as the camera could see.
No, not the M11 but rather the A9 between Munich and Nuremberg.

Archaic weights have a comfortable familiarity.
...is what old people assume.
The way I see it, if you're going to use base 16 units, then they need to be represented by the digits 0-F for comfortable familiarity.
But stones and pounds are base 14 to confuzzle the enemy further.

From your reference to 'metric goons', & the tone of the rest of your post, I detect an enormous dose of hypocrisy. You're "[g]oing on about one system of measurement over another", by denigrating those who prefer a particular system, & doing so in a way which suggests an irrational dislike of that system.
We already have loads of threads to debate metric and imperial, you know.

It's not so much the main canon, but the fan-written contributions (which are canonised through a complicated and hard to explain collective collaboration process) that make it. There's an awful lot of tedious military stuff from the military history buffs, and the intricacies of all the religious politics can be overwhelming at times, but at the same time so many stories full of glorious little details by someone with a bit of specialised knowledge or an interest in a particular subject or character. Everything from radio and aeronautical engineering through medicine and horse-breeding to politics and music.
Health warning: It's literally endless. People keep writing more.

South Yorkshire police incompetent 27 years ago, dishonest ever since.
According to Peter Chippindale and Chris Horrie in their definitive history Stick it Up Your Punter - the Rise and Fall of the Sun, MacKenzie spent an unusual amount of time deliberating over the fateful headline for that day's paper.
"MacKenzie then did an enormously uncharacteristic thing. He sat for fully half an hour thinking about the front page layout."
According to the book he pondered two headlines, one that was rejected reading "You Scum", and the one that was eventually used - and was to prove the biggest disaster for the paper's reputation and sales: "The Truth".
A team of about 18 journalists and photographers had been sent to cover the story, and although reporter Harry Arnold sought out MacKenzie to caution against reporting allegations as truth, MacKenzie pressed on.
Having decided to lay the blame on the fans' doorsteps, there was no stopping him.
Under the headline "The Truth" there were three subheadings:
Some fans picked pockets of victims
Some fans urinated on the brave cops
Some fans beat up PCs giving the kiss of life
The story read as follows: "Drunken Liverpool fans viciously attacked rescue workers as they tried to revive victims of the Hillsborough soccer disaster, it was revealed last night.
"Police officers, firemen and ambulance crew were punched, kicked and urinated upon by a hooligan element in the crowd.
"Some thugs rifled the pockets of injured fans as they were stretched out unconscious on the pitch.

Canada's governor general in protocol breach with Queen
Canada's Governor General David Johnston has said a "slippy" carpet was to blame for an apparent breach of royal etiquette with the Queen.
He was seen to be lightly touching the Queen's elbow as she descended some steps, during an event in London to mark Canada's 150th birthday.
"I was just anxious to be sure there was no stumbling on the steps," he told CBC News.

I'd be interested in the amount of fraud directly attributable to contactless payments. The banks seem reluctant to share this information.Just as they are reluctant to share the amount of fraud attributable to chip and pin. The main reason they pay up so easily when your card gets cloned is because they don't want taking to court and be forced to share this information. The charitable view is that they don't want confidence in the products knocking, the less charitable view is they don't want saddling with the costs associated with a) strengthening the systems, b) providing alternative systems and support for people who refuse to use chip and pin.

61. "So you're responsible for the kind of crap Channel Four produces!" Speaking to then chairman of the channel, Michael Bishop, in 1962.
Seems like a good shout to me.Although he was a prince of Greece I don't think he was actually Greek.

As far as I am concerned you can call him what you like. I did however think your comment "One less mad racist Greek bastard in the world" was a racist comment in itself.
Similarly I doubt he spoke to the Chairman of Channel 4 in 1962The quote was wrong - it was 1996 according to a different media source

Interesting take.
If you’re going to be like that, I might point out that he was actually born in Greece but you’re denying him Greek nationality based on his non-Greek ethnicity.
So who’s the racist?
Even The National Rail website has gone into mourning. It will be the end of YACF. We will all be shot for appearing in public without black armbands. Or for cycling during a period of national mourning.

I met him on two occasions and on one of them spent 12 minutes alone with him. I found him to be a very accommodating and interesting person.
Added to those the connotation that it was because he was Greek.
I on the other hand only pointed out what biographies and history books tell us. Although he was born in Crete...
I think you might have just accidentally agreed with my previous post. :P

. He was 'racist' in the strictest definition of the word in that he adopted stereotypical memes about people and where they came from, but he would never have dreamed of prejudging any individual - and, like PP, there were many, many people of all ethnicities who would sing his praises. That is a very odd definition of racism, Tim.

I guess it's not a definition, Matt, it's more a description. And I'm not attempting to to define racism - I'm trying to illustrate that they were racist by some standards but not by others. Of course, perception depends on perspective and mine is inevitably the wrong one.

I've never watched it, tbh. But I've just been reading about it on wikipedia.Perhaps an entry for what have you learned today thread, but I’ve just learned that there is actually a ‘plot’ to love island. My only awareness of the show is from here, the front pages of the tabloids when perusing the same on the news stand and a comment from a former colleague and Facebook friend who once mentioned that his daughter turned down an offer to appear on the show.
It seems the basic premise is that the contestants have to couple up or be eliminated. And they are set various challenges to test the strength of their relationships.

I am told by people who read more shite press than I do, that Schofield had a habit of having multiple clandestine affairs with younger and less senior men, then basically bullying them to quit their jobs or get them sacked to protect his privacy.I wondered about the first, but if that is the case, why have they not reported it.
