looking for new tunes (share your secret bin)
« on: 14 April, 2020, 10:42:47 pm »
I've decided that I need to listen to more new music, well new to me.

Today I found these three that I haven't heard of or about before :

Black Stone Cherry - Black & Blues (EP) : American Rock and blues  - https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nAYO9XgJllyJyIgKK9YiFNjkAtXKFVDt0

Fontaines D.C - random tracks from them, but mainly their album Dogrel : Lads from Ireland, post-punk, English rock - https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nJ3WlBRRd4QjNPUSPEWr3N4vwm0wNnaSs

Tinariwen - Emmaar : Group of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara Desert region of northern Mali - https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_l3ZBIdokLGHG2PRwpSRO3KdsjMyEC42A0

Oh I forgot this lot, which I found some months ago

AnnenMayKantereit - German group,  https://music.youtube.com/channel/UCK2ZLsY9Mb_dxZiZfKE3lGg
especially this track - Barfuß am Klavier -  https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=tERRFWuYG48&feature=share

Do you have anything you recommend, like a new style or artist, a hidden gem, a toe tapper, please share.

I don't know how new these are, I let BBC 6 Music find it for me, currently listening to
Warmduscher
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iogJMGrC84U

Porridge Radio
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27BvZLSzaz8

BC Camplight
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=py4prb2kQ1o

And still on BBC sounds some interesting stuff from the festival that was a lifetime ago, or was it a few weeks, the Jehnny Beth set needs playing loud and the Kate Tempest needs a proper listen

Thanks both, I haven't heard of any before, though I got a feeling that I have seen Yussef name on a lounge/chill/acid jazz mix, that Disco Peanut is a bit rude :)

Funnily enough I had Tinariwen in the back of my cab yesterday playing yesterday

How about The Big Moon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OijD72t4XY

More chilled are Lanterns on the Lake https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJrS-TCHU-Y

And finally, probably the best Mongolian metal-world fusion band The Hu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4xZUr0BEfE

Like Paul H said, I let 6 Music steer me. I found Fontaines DC and Kate Tempest that way, both already mentioned.

I think I'll  get "Welcome to Bobby's Motel" by Pottery when it comes out, solely off the back of listening to Texas Drums.

Sleaford Mods are also on my list of what to get next.

I saw Tinariwen playing live in Bristol a couple of years ago.  The place was jumping

Big moon, on bikes, with go faster flares and covering their brakes - whats not to like.

Oh yes I forgot about The Hu Mongolian metal throat singing, videos are worth a watch just to see the fantastic landscapes.

Also added Pottery and Sleaford Mods to the list.

Thanks, keep them coming

Thinking about Tinariwen - what about the Turbans, not the lot from the 60s but the lot from London and Manywhere as they call it "The Turbans are an International Musical Collective playing Modern Ethnic Music from “Manywhere”" -  https://soundcloud.com/the-turbans - Looking at their video on the tube, their concerts looks mad (in a good way)

They remind me of a few mad days in Barcelona many moons ago, hidden bars/clubs (legal and not so ...), live bands from all over, who then after they have played a gig, just jammed with whom ever and what ever that could make sound into the early mornings.

Saw Lanterns On The Lake as a support act a few years ago.  Might have been with Explosions In The Sky, or GY!BE.

Thanks Woollypigs, I didn't know musicyoutube existed. I assume I'm on some sort of monthly free trial now but it hasn't told me that. I started with AnnenMayKantereit which was good - who knew what a beautiful language German was for lieder? - then went down a rabbit-hole of shoegazery music that can accompany my 'w'fh without grabbing too much of my attention - Beach House, Flower Face, Bahamas.

I've been asked to pay for YouTube and never accepted the offer for a free month. I think just using the web browser version drags the music from YouTube and is free to use. But using the app and offline playing and higher quality is where payment comes in, let's see in a few weeks when I have used it for a month ;)

I've been telling everyone about FIP for ages. It's a French radio stream or, rather, a set of streams: rock, jazz, reggae, groove, electro, etc., and a general one which cherrypicks from the others.  It's ad-free, with no talking whatsoever, other than a syndicated news broadcast for about 3 minutes once and hour. (Though there tends to be a bit of a chat in the evenings, when they switch over to live broadcasting.) I have a very large music collection, but I often find myself ignoring it and listening to FIP all day. It's genuinely eclectic and I've discovered loads of new stuff - you just check the website to see what it is you're listening to. Highly recommended: https://www.fip.fr

Thank you. I followed the link and it opened with albums by Rhiannon Giddens and R L Burnside.... To be folloewd up.

Last night I found Ry Cooder's latest album, The Prodigal Son (2018); worth a listen.

The soundtrack of Encounters at the End of the World (a Werner Herzog film) by David Lindley and Henry Kaiser is also worth hearing.

+1

I discovered FIP in something like 1973.  I think it was all live back then, and it was certainly very informal. I remember one of the presenters saying in passing that she had a new boyfriend who was 32 years old and still had all his teeth.  Unfortunately in this area we don't pick them up very well - German FM stations are very emphatic.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Ah thanks for the link to FIP, when I lived in Paris there was a radio station I used to listen too. I can't remember what it was called but in was over the air and had the various categories like FIP. I truly enjoyed French radio, because they played so much more than just "the top of the pop". Introduced me to Arabic, Persian, Trance, Grove, African e.g world music, more than radio in DK or UK ever did.

There is also https://zoma.fm - I used to listen to Groove Salad for hours and hours

I also just found this radio station https://www.nts.live/ based in Hackney and LA (I think it was)
