For convoluted reasons[1], this week I have been mostly watching For All Mankind, an alternate history of USAnian space exploration based on the premise of the Soviets beating them to the moon and Nixon[2] (and later Ted Kennedy) responding by lobbing massive amounts of cash in NASA's general direction.

It comes across as a sort of medium-budget distascopic version of Mary Robinette Kowal's Lady Astronaut series, by which I mean highly recommended.  The Jerrie Cob character is just brilliant, and they've taken strong inspiration from Poppy Nortcutt and Mary Jackson.  They've also got a really good Deke Slayton and a couple of guys called Neil and Buzz who you wouldn't trust to park your spaceship.  At risk of committing soilers, the series takes a more direct approach to the issue of Von Braun than The Calculating Stars did.

Occasional technical goofs are intermingled with handwaves at rapidly accelerated technological development, which works just fine.  Politically, it's a mixed bag.  We don't get to see the Soviet side of things, which is a shame.  The story levels up around episode 4.

Eminently watchable.  With any luck Series 2 will eventually get made.

[1] I randomly stumbled across a Youtube comment from someone who worked on the series talking about crappy power supplies.
[2] Who is primarily represented in the series by a close-up of the now legendary compact reel-to-reel tape recorder.  Lols.

It’s not on until next Saturday, but I recommend The Lunchbox, BBC2 @ 12:25am. Shown as a tribute to Irrfan Khan, who died this week.

You lot seem like the kind of people DEVS is aimed at. Anyone managed to stick with it?

We've made it halfway, but decided we'll probably watch the last one just to see how it turns out. It's really not half as clever as it thinks it is. Nor half as original. Looks good though.

(and what a waste of Nick Offerman ... )

After the Queens speech re VE day tomorrow evening on BBC TV, there is apparently going to be a 'Peoples Tribute' snips of film of folk from around the UK singing "We'll Meet Again". The BBC might have sent someone out to film at a bike shop where one of us on here works.....

Like mattc, I stuck with it just to see how it turned out. Wish I hadn't bothered.
It wasn't DEVS see? It's DEUS
Aye, very clever.  ::-)

Spaced, all of Series 1 tonight (well, most of it into tomorrow) on C4. I didn't catch it first time round.

Not exactly tonight, as it’s on All4, but Green Wing. I’d forgotten just how good it was.

We started watching that having never seen it before. I found the camera style a bit irritating.

And for Cardinal fans apparently there is a new series coming to the BBC 'soon'

Ooh good news.

We might give Life on Mars a try - somehow missed it completely (see also Ashes to Ashes)

Bad news: it will be the final series. Chiz.

Watching the re-runs of Misfits.

Wow. Much cleverer, more original , and with much less annoying characters than I'd expected. Why didn't people tell me about this?

(and why are their phones so small?)

Horizon tonight was a very frank look at the effect mental health issues have had on Tony Slattery.

A bit further along. Way too much ambiguity with Von Braun. Sure, he got shunned, but that was seemingly it.
Also, there's some hilariously bad VFX.

It was, in its day, one of the best things on TV. Might seem a bit dated now.

I notice that Professor Jim Al-Khalili's 'Science and Islam' is available for a while again on IPlayer.
Worth catching if you've missed it up till now.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

+1 I'm watching it again.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Saw a thing with him on bbc4 last night, not sure if it’s new or not, about the history of chemistry. Jolly good it was too.

There's a series? (Googles) Ah, BBC. Never mind.

In other news the final season of Agents of SHIELD (by far the best Marvel TV series, though I'd do numerous very bad things to get Agent Carter back), so there will be tears. Already awesome, because

Only twelve episodes and we watched four last night. Pleasure is, by definition, ephemeral. Unless it involves deeply implanted electrodes and a power supply with UPS.
