Title: Liz Creese
Post by: hellymedic on 11 December, 2019, 07:09:50 pm
A Facebook posting informed me Liz died peacefully last Thursday 5 December.

Liz had some formidable Audax achievements.

Sorry to hear Liz is gone. Since Rocco died, we’d only seen her a few times as she’d retired from cycling and concentrated on her grandchildren.

Liz had an outstanding audax palmares with several high mileage years in the ‘90s. There are just a few women around the world who rival her and only a couple of AUK women.

Sad news,
As a regular rider who rode with Liz once or twice, her company along with Rocco was always enjoyable
Condolences to Liz,s family

Liz was indeed a special person in the audax world. I've met Rocco and Liz several times, both in the UK and in France some 15-25 years ago. She'll be missed.

This is very sad news. I was fortunate enough to meet Liz several times in my early days of Audaxing - when Rocco was also still around - and even to spend a pleasant evening in their home at the end of a 300km ride some years ago.  Truly, one of the AUK legends.

I will also post this request on the AUK forum but if anyone feels that they would like to share some memories of Liz (or even write a suitable obituary) for Arrivee, please PM me.

I rode Liz's Bluebell Ride 100km twice and the 300km Ruislip Randonnée. We were also both on the West London CTC DA Committee. Liz and Rocco overtook me on the ascent to Stokenchurch when I did the old WCW and I didn't see them again on that ride.

One of AUK's great characters, along with Rocco.  I have fond and amusing memories of the two of them.

Sad news, Helen.  I recall getting blown off Liz's wheel on an A5 Rangers event in the early 90s.   An ungainly but highly efficient pedalling style. I last saw her nearly 20 years ago examining postcards with Rocco in a Harrow collectors' fair.  Lovely photo btw

Been looking at some of Liz's achievements & they are impressive,

Brevet 5000
Brevet 25000
Randonneur 100,000
Randonneur 10,000 x7, 6 of them pre 2000.
Ultra Randonneur
PBP x2

No doubt there will be many more.

Very sad news.  I believe she was the first Auk to be awarded a Brevet 100,000 and won the points record when there were fewer Perms and DIYs available. Many great memories of her and Rocco on the events from Ruislip she organised and also when they helped on Graham Baxter's coaches supporting riders on PBP.

She will, indeed, be missed.

Sad news.  I held onto groups with her and Rocco during the 90s and they rode events that I organised.

I last bumped into her at Tim Wainwright's funeral a couple of years ago.

Photo shamelessly snaffled from Richard Creese's Facebook selection. I've no idea of its photographer but LIKED!

Try either Willesden CC or Robert Fry. You need someone who goes back a long way as Liz hasn’t ridden for almost 20 years and not many of her contemporaries are left. eg Rocco, Neville Chanin, JJ etc

Ray Kelly or Mark Brooking perhaps.

Mark Brooking is occasionally on yacf as 'assasin' [sic].

This is very sad news, I have very happy memories of riding with Liz and Rocco when they ventured north of the Watford Gap.    In particular I remember riding with them on the Daylight 600 when Liz was amused to be called "a living legend" by a local rider.    The photograph is representative of my memories of her, RIP Liz.

And this one is from PBP '91 (registration day).

With Robert Fry.  The early '90s were 'peak Liz'. That year they were both going for record points totals and towards the end of the season were riding about three Permanents a week, in each others' company.  Sometimes Sheila and I tagged along to make a foursome, resulting in personal record totals for each of us.  You can see Robert spent a lot of time on his tri-bars.  He now lives in the US.

Most of the other photos I have of Liz are incredibly unflattering - here's a decent one from Ian H.

Sadly missed---an aspirational legend to us newer and less capable audaxers.

Giraffe might be a better bet. He rode with Liz & Rocco a lot.

Giraffe was also AUK Events Secretary and devised Permanents that ran past his pad, which he named 'The Creese in the Road' (Lincoln-Ashton-Winchester) and the Midlands Mesh.

For those of us who have been AUKs for a mere 22 years, who - please - is The Giraffe?

Some interesting reading matter here which may assist. [if it's available to you]
I recall a very tall [a clue perhaps] AUK mile-eater in the 80s who crops up in the thread below... I had no idea that was his handle/nickname.

There is also another member of yacf with the same name as Giraffe, but he is more hirsute.

I will uncloak Giraffe by PM if this is needed.

I remember a LeJog in the early 1990s. Six of us started - Liz, the aforementioned Giraffe, me, John Reeks, Jimmy Green, and I think Peter Gifford. A group perm, except (a) it was decades before the term was coined and (b) we split up after about 2 miles and any idea of riding as a group flew out of the window. I think only Giraffe and Jimmy Green finished. I gave up at Worcester - it didn't help that it was the hottest weekend of the year and I'd ridden a 1000 the previous weekend. Before she hooked up with Rocco, Liz would arrange in advance to ride with an appointed gentleman (especially on overnght rides), in this case it was John Reeks. On other rides I recall Peter Hansen and Keith Miller filling this role. During the cross-toasting at one year's reunion there was a toast to "all the men who had spent the night with Liz Creese".
