n+1 for yellow-ceitidh
« on: 09 September, 2009, 01:10:51 pm »
Well almost n+1.

Katie has grown out of the 18" Specialized Hard Rock that we got a few years ago from a boot sale for £10  :(. She has used it as her school bike (3 miles each way) and hack bike and we have been planning for Zoe (10) to have it as her hack bike as Lewis is now using Zoes old Marin as a mountain bike. I have been looking for a secondhand bike that Katie can have as her next school bike for a while and recently I saw an old 22" 1990s Raleigh mountain bike on ebay. the desciption was a bit vague and the only photo was not too clear, but it did say that it was made from 531 tubing. Initially I lost the auction, but the origial winner did not pay up so it was relisted and I got it for £16.99 - just over half of what I originally bid!

The bike arrived this morning and I have just got it out of the box and put it together. I'm quite jealous of yellow-ceitidh, and wish that the frame was a couple of inches bigger so it would fit me.

I'm not too keen on the colour scheme, but -

A nice 531 frame

I have some of these on one of my other bikes and they work really well.

About 18 years ago, I really wanted some of these.

Just need to change the tyres for some slicks and add a rack and mudguards and katie should have a really nice bike.

What a bargain  :) Are there lots of old 531 MTBs knocking about then? I never think to look for them on ebay.

It's amazing isn't it? A perfectly good bicycle only goes for 17 quid!

Well done - bargain!!
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

I have 2 Raleigh's (road bikes) of a similar vintage, Reynolds tubing etc. and I reckon they are generally underrated. Hope you get many happy hours of riding out of it.

That's a rather large frame for an MTB, even an early horizontal top tube one.  My Frankendale is an 18" frame with a level top tube, and I need a specially short stem on it!  Maybe fashions are changing again, and we'll all be riding the biggest frame we can get a leg over, like in the 1970s.

Are you sure that's only a 22"?  From the length of the head tube it looks like 23ish.  What a stonking bargain though!

22" C2C - Katie has decided that she doesn't like it (silly girl) so I'm going add a quill-ahead converter and a long stem and use it as a hack bike for guess who!

Ceitidh looks like she's about to challenge me for the YACF "inside leg" prize.  And she's right about that colour scheme...

haven't you girls heard of hammerite? It's like nail polish, comes in lots of colours, just in bigger pots.
