Central Heating controller

I have a radio-controlled device with which I operate my CH.
The controller runs on a pair of AAs.
I last changed the batteries less than a couple of weeks ago, and the 'replace battery' icon has already appeared on the screen.
I'm using Fujitsu 2450mAh rechargeables which are recently purchased and have been subjected to very few re-charging cycles.
Are these devices unusually power hungry?

Its battery warning is probably calibrated for the higher cell voltage of alkaline batteries, rather than (presumably) NiMH.

That'll be it then.
They are indeed NiMH.

Check their voltage with a multimeter, see if they have dropped significantly below 1.2V. If not then, as Kim says, the unit is expecting alkaline cells.

The real question of course is whether it'll sit there with a low battery icon and work fine for ages, or whether it will decide the battery is flat and preemptively conk out.

Previous experience is that it'll carry on for ages despite crying 'I want new Duracells'.
