So, if anyone's interested in how thin the braking surface on a rim needs to be before it'll yield to 7bar and this happens.....
It's somewhere between 0.67 and 0.81 of a mm.
That's the readings I'm getting at the point where the rim separates into two

Mavic Aksium rear wheel, they were 4 years old but only did around 150 miles from new, set off on a ride and it just gave up, lucky I was not too far from home and was able to walk back.

The new wheels have a lot more metal around the spokes so I suspect they had a few failures.

Well, the bodge-it solution would be to wrap it warmly for the winter in carbon tow  ;D

now considerably longer. I drilled a small hole at each end of the crack, but the crack went under the holes and carried on. Only one more month to go. N-1+1=N hits the road 1st Jan

No picture I’m afraid but I saw someone trudging disconsolately up Cheapside this morning, pushing bike with one hand and carrying in the other the chainset complete with bottom bracket and shell which had parted company with the frame tubes at the welds.

Tuesday afternoon and a bloke brings in a GT Chucker. Apparently I've told his lad that I'll replace the BB for 25 quid.

He also brought the remains of the chainset - which looked like it had been used as a prop in the 'Anvil Chorus'. The square taper more, sort of, wasn't. Square or tapered. Mullered is probably the best description. 'Someone' had tried to remove the BB with a chisel and succeeded in snapping half of the driveside cup off so fitting a splined tool had become impossible. They had also managed to chew up the frame which, being alloy, couldn't be heated to assist in the BB removal.

Honestly, it's the first time I have looked someone straight in the eye and refused to work on their bike. Not even the wheels were salvageable.

Balancer in French means "throw away".

Cleaning it the other day, I noticed the mudguard bridge looked a bit rusty below the paint.  It was not exactly smooth prior to getting the re-spray.
I prodded it lightly with a screwdriver and it just collapsed. The rot looks confined to this bridge.  What to do ? (I had noticed the handling wasnt exactly secure on fast bumpy downhills any more, perhaps co-incidence)

If it's rare & exotic then it may be worth visiting [insert framebuilder of choice] for a renovation, if it's a common or garden gate steel frame then look for a replacement a powder coater anna can of waxoyl.

Our very own Bicycle Repair Man would be the man to consult . . .

My other thorn, 2001 XTC and a lovely ride is now dying with terminal rust too. It has 3 small rust holes in the downtube just above the f.mech.
Not too bothered, but definitely thorn were the lancia of bicycles around late 90's early 20's.

A Shimano HF08 tandem hub:

The nice and fortunate thing is that you can ride for quite a long way with a hub in this condition.
