It's an interesting point, whether lack of signs is relevant or not. On the one hand, ignorance of the law is generally no excuse, on the other hand, there is some precedence concerning the lack or inappropriateness of signage, since there was a case in a Royal Park (Hyde Park if I recall correctly) where it was held that No Cycling signs marked on the paths surface were insufficient, and they had to have actual real signs up.
