Cav: business as usual
« on: 22 January, 2013, 11:50:26 am »
So, Cav kicks off his OPQS career with a win in the Tour de San Luis. Sounds like he's hitting the ground running this year. Full of praise for his new team-mates and his bike.

Meanwhile, Greipel won by a street in the first stage of the Tour Down Under.

Can't wait to see those two going head to head this season.

It's great to read some racing news that isn't about some American bloke who doesn't even race any more!

Yeah, looking forward to Cav Vs Gorilla this year. Not sure when they'll be competing against each other next? One of the middle eastern races perhaps?
Those wonderful norks are never far from my thoughts, oh yeah!

Excellent news.  And bobbbb's right: Racing news about actual bike racing on bikes is refreshing.

Refreshing is the word. I'm never usually that bothered about the TDU, and I've never even heard of the Tour de San Luis, but it really is great to be able to talk about some actual bike racing again.

Apparently, that was Cav's 90th professional win, so he's pretty much guaranteed to bust through the 100 mark this year. I saw a pic of him and he looks really lean, which bodes well.

Anyone else hoping Cav can get 12 more TdF stage wins to claim top spot?

Hard to imagine a Brit overtaking Eddy but it just about doable with the right team and a lot of luck.  I think 2nd place in the Stage Win league table could be two tours (or one exceptional tour) away.

I was thrilled by the sport news from Australia this morning - and nothing to do with Andy Murray:

Woo! Never mind Froome & Wiggins, could this be the year of the G-man?

PM, Cav needs to win an average four stages a year for the next three years to overhaul Eddy. I'm pretty certain he'll do it.

We have Sky Sports in the office so I've just been watching the highlights. His attack on the Corkscrew climb was brilliant. Obviously planned but totally caught everyone napping. Bodes well for the Classics - looks like he'll really give Gilbert & co a run for their money this year.

And yes, he looks very lean.

<snigger> The commentators said 'mountains'. It's WA.

The main mountain there will have been the heat.

Talk of G being Sky's Classics man in waiting seems to have been going on for yonks now. Let's hope something finally happens this year, and before JT-L beats him to it! Lovely stage win mind - thanks for posting.

Textbook.

I was in no doubt about the result from the moment I saw his face emerge from the pack, in about fifth or sixth place with 250m to go.

Just imagine how dangerous he'll be once the OPQS train gets its act together.

Amazing technique, his frontal area, when he goes heads down over that final 100m, is tiny compared to everyone else.  Some of the bigger guys must present twice or three times the area.  You can see why he's quicker, with less power.

Hat to the great effort by Hutarovich, but what can a mere mortal do against Cav?

Fantastic leadout by Terpstra too.

Are we heading back to the HTC style days where no other team would chase a breakaway on a flat stage of a grand tour?
