I am so pleased for Emma Pooley. After riding selflessly in the RR she gets the chance to show what she could do on a course that suits her.

A silver medal well earned..

Indeed ecellent news! I always reckon that GB ought to be best at TTs considering it's where most racers start!

Superb, so that's 2 medals in events that the predictions didn't have us winning. Is it possible that the cycling estimates were actually connservative?!?

fantastic - Boardman was on the telly this morning talking about "Project Pooley" which they've been working on since Jan cos they thought the course would suit her so well.

She's so teeny that her bars are below the top of her front wheel!

That is not legal on a UCI bike.

Local girl too (Norwich) - excellent!

And if you're going to be beaten to Gold, it may as well be by an American called Armstrong  ::-).

Well Done Ms Pooley

screengrab from the beeb site:

the bar looks below but the armrests are above - would this make it legal? I cant find a picture from side on.

Great news - I really enjoyed her attack on the road race, great to see her win a silver in the TT.

I think that the last person to use that setup was Pantanni.

<piccie>

Effective but rather ugly. I'd rather see monocoque frames than handlebars welded to the fork crown. I'm not against the UCI constraining bike designers, but this example is an unfortunate side-effect.

It's getting like F1, where working to the completely arbitrary rules results in ugly oddities (walrus noses etc). Everyone agrees the early 'cigar' cars were better looking (but a lot slower!).

Looking very carefully the bottom of the bars where you hold them is above the top of the tyre - just. So it is legal.

This is so British... The *local* thing. I know for a reason about this, but E and I were commenting about this last night.

Nice piece of engineering on the bike. Very nice.

Effective but rather ugly.

She's not my type admittedly, but that does seem rather harsh.

Well, I'd be mildly pleased if you knew my dad, but "over the moon"?

Looking at Pooley's bike, I'm thinking "spot the Chris Boardman influence."

I remember one of his TT bikes had all the handlebars mounted below the lower headset race.

Spot the track heritage influence too... the (East?-) Germans have used this a long atime ago; nothing *that*new.

To be honest, there's not realy much in cycling that wasn't thought of about 100 years ago.

Did you know that around 1900, the US had two patent offices; one for bike related inventions and one for everything else?
