Yep, at the beginning of August (when I'm back from a month in Germany) our household will increase by another four canine feet. We're planning to have a Cockerpoo/Cockapoo/Spoodle (a cocker spaniel and poodle cross) to join Lucy the ageing Weimaraner. We plan to get a female puppy and, of course, to get her used to the Burley TailWagon from day 1 so she can go out on cycle trips with us.
I'll start looking for a specific puppy in a couple of weeks, at which point I shall post lots of photos of really cute little doggies!
-
So, the question is, which of these two should we have?
White and fawn one:

Golden one:

And here they are together:
-
Awwww, how cute! I couldn't choose between them. They're both lovely.
I'd really like another dog. I miss my English Springer. Thing is, it's got to be a Great Dane (blue or black) or nothing and I just don't have the space at the moment. One day...
-
They look so happy together it would be unfair to separate them ::-)
-
Got to be both!
-
No, definitely not both - just one of them. I'm veering towards the golden one, although the photos of that one aren't so good. It's a tricky choice though. I am planning to go and see them on Wednesday evening (they're in Basildon) to make a definitive choice, which is a bit tricky this early as they haven't even got their eyes open, but I'm off for a month in Germany in six days...
-
They're not very poodley are they?
Get the white/fawn one. Easier to dye later on.
-
From the photos I'd go white/fawn.
In real life, I'd go from how they make me feel.
Go with your guts.
-
I can't imagine what they will look like when they grow up :P
Just make sure you get them/it vaccinated when about 2 to 3 months old.
Oh and the first one to bite your shoes is the one to choose :D
-
I suppose the white/fawn one will look like this:
And the golden one like this:
although without the pink bow, of course.
In imagegoogling most of them seem to be white so the golden ones are more unusual - might be more interesting to have one of them then.
-
So we went to visit them today and here are some pics:

We've decided to go for the golden one, it was a little more lively although it's very early days for them. They were most sweet and mum was very friendly.
-
:) :) :) :)
-
Well we're not having either now. The breeder has taken a deposit from someone else for 'our' puppy!
Some further investigation has turned up another decent litter, also in Basildon, and I've just had a conversation with the lady and reserved a puppy. She will be black with a few white marks (paws). I'll go and see her when I'm back in England on 1 August and she'll come home on 3rd August, which is while James is away sailing...
-
Here are the two puppies from which we can choose:
I think I'm going for the one on the right which seems to have a little white bib.
The email from the lady was slightly odd as she seemed to say they are 8 weeks and 4 days old now, whereas originally she said they are ready to go on 3 August (which would make them 6 weeks old now). I've emailed her back for clarification, not that it matters too much; in fact, if she gets a chance to house-train them beforehand, all the better!
Think that doggy will accessorise my Trice well?
-
The trouble with black pets is that they don't photograph well (although the above photo belies that!)
Talisker always seems to be a black silhouette in photographs, I have to artificially bump up the contrast to give him some texture!
Very cute though.
-
I think I got one decent photo of our black lab in the the seven years we had him, for precisely that reason. And the photo was taken in the boot of the car, bizarrely!
I'm looking forward to getting her but we need to do some extra fencing in the back garden and James is going away for a week's sailing the day after I return from Düsseldorf, which is also the day I will probably get the puppy, so it's going to be a mad rush!
-
Is that someone's knee in the above pic, AH? If so they look a bit older than 8 weeks to me.
-
Wow awesome, I have a chocolate cockapoo myself called 'Google'
Are you aware how totally bananas the poodle crosses are?? ;D
Google is not particularly intelligent LOL but he is very loving and does agility classes and learned from a young age to run next to my bike.

She looks lovely! Have fun :)
-
How does Lucy get on with her?
-
Congrats! Does she like the trailer? ::-)
I'm glad we're getting another dog. Taking a tortoise for a walk is so dull, they don't fetch and it takes 'em two weeks not to fetch! ;)
-
She hasn't seen the trailer yet (she's far too small) but has been in the bike basket and is quite happy in there.
Lucy is a bit unsure of her and has growled a couple of times but is mostly ignoring her. Poppy is ignoring Lucy too, but follows James around like a devoted acolyte. He's going off sailing now for a week so she'll probably forget all about him.
So far 100% success rate with using the garden for the loo!
-
for evidence of madness see this video of Google playing with a snail he captured in the garden
Our vet's waiting room is covered in posters warning about catching lungworm from snails (apparently even from their old trails) so it's best to discourage dogs from playing with them.
-
There's a newish product out that you drop on the back of dogs' necks which stops them catching lungworm from snails and the like (as well as preventing fleas into the bargain). I expect the posters were on the back of that product.
I get it for Cam because she often grabs a sneaky nibble of grass and there can be snail larvae on that...gave her a fresh dose before the wedding camping this weekend as it also stops ticks
Poppy is adorable, Helen. I wish I had Cam from a young age to get her used to a trailer!
-
Oh my, she is very cute indeed, reminiscent of the Jackapoos we saw when we got Ted (our new puppy).
-
She's still doing really well, still 100% success rate with toilet - she seems to understand the purpose of going out into the garden after waking/eating. I shut the door on her crate after lunch and cycled to Pets At Home to get her a cat collar (with bell) as I've trodden on her twice. She is a bit of a stealth dog and hard to see as she's black and small - the collar seems to have helped. She was fine in the crate, and she's just been in there for another hour (with the door closed) whilst I chatted to a friend on the phone and was in the room with her. So far so good, but she rather took to James and so is missing him, I think (he's gone away for a week's sailing). She keeps settling down inside his slippers.
-

That seems appropriate, the bell on his collar is how I avoid standing on my stealth moggy, Talisker, whose also black and wanders underfoot without any warning!

Are you sure??
She keeps settling down inside his slippers.
Hmmm?
She is absolutely gorgeous :D.
-
Poppy is doing really well still.
Here she is in the Burley TailWagon that PedalDog sold to me:
She won't go out in it yet but she certainly seems to like it as a place to chill out. I keep finding her underneath the cushion.
We also have a basket for the bike which she has spent a little time in, although it's too small for her to be in for too long (plus it's wicker which she could chew if she got bored).
We had a much quieter night last night. She now accepts the crate door being shut after about a minute (there are a few whines and squeaks initially) and goes to sleep. She woke me at about 2:30am with squeaking so I took her outside which was clearly what was required. She then slept through until 6am at which point (as it was daylight) we both got up.
We've had just one accident in the house which was entirely my fault; her crate was still upstairs and she'd eaten her food so I ran downstairs to get some more. She's too small to go down the stairs and puppies tend to need the loo after eating and I forgot that briefly, so there was a tiny pile when I got upstairs again. However she's been brilliant otherwise. I left her for an hour and a half today as I went out cycling. Even now, she was sleeping by my feet outside in the garden and I've come in and she's stayed out there, so she's not permanently following me about which is good.
-
I think she needs to grow into the trailer. ;D
-
I think it has room for shopping and doggie!
She's been asleep in it for the last hour outside. The TailWagon is a real winner for a Cockapoo, despite Weimaraners turning up their nose at it!

Here are some pics of Poppy today - she is now 10 weeks old.

She's doing really brilliantly overall, is mostly house-trained and is well crate-trained (which means we can leave her in her den for an hour and a half knowing she can't be up to any mischief).
The weird thing is that I've felt quite depressed for the last two weeks, a bit weepy and otherwise stressed. I think it's lack of sleep with the new dog, plus the responsibility for training her and socialising her so that she can have a good life with us, but now we're getting a bit more sleep and she's settling in more I hope things will improve. There are days when I wish I could hand her back to the breeder, but at other times she's so sweet and lovely it's not an issue...
-
a bit like having children then :demon:
-
(http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/Auntie_Helen/Poppy/Poppyat10weeks4.jpg)
It's hard to imagine this ^^^^ being anything less than a gorgeous bundle of cuteness.
But I know what you mean. The Ted is a handful at times and can even be a bit bitey when he gets tired and over-excited. Kittens are a lot easier than puppies that's for sure.
-
Oh, I've only just found this thread.
What a lovely doggie :)
-
She is lovely, and of course really cute. Her behaviour is excellent 95% of the time, but she has her excessive-biting moments, as well as an insatiable curiosity which will no doubt be trying when she's a bit bigger.
We've just moved her crate/den into the kitchen for a change of scenery. When I shut her in it she howled for about a minute but now seems to be quiet. We want to get her used to having her crate/den in different places so she can come with us to visit friends, and James wants her to go on the boat with him eventually.
I'm feeling a bit better today, having had a good night's sleep, but James is beginning to look a bit ragged instead. He's upstairs having a sleep as he can sleep during the day (I can't).
I'm off for a cycle ride late this afternoon with some friends. I've done 86 miles this month - bear in mind this time last month I'd done 500 miles by now...
-

I'm also somewhat housebound, kitten-sitting
-
That's one of the advantages of a getting a pre-owned cat, like Talisker. He was probably only just not a kitten when we got him, estimated to be about 1-2 years old by the Blue Cross's vet, so knew how to use a litter tray and cat flap. Obviously he had to be left by himself, indoors, for the first couple of weeks, but he probably just slept for most of that anyway!
Unlike a kitten or puppy he could be left to look after himself.
If I'd been in a position to keep a kitten, I would have kept the one I found (http://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=21713.0) last year. She was very cute, but I guess has gone off to a suitable home now.
-
Yes.
First kittens we've had, but to be honest we knew this was about the only time we could do it. I don't have any overseas trips for a while, for the first time for many years, I've just done my target ride for the year (Mille Cymru) and we're living in a tatty rented house with tatty old furniture (ours) pending moving.
Kittens it is :)
<sorry for thread hijack; back to dogs>

Looks like a lovely pup :)
Do cockapoodles or whatever they are called need clipped?
-
I think Cockapoos do need clipping but I haven't looked into that yet - I have a dog groomer neighbour so no doubt she can advise me.
I'd forgotten how much hard work a puppy is (nothing compared to children, I know, but I've never had children) and I've been quite down at times about things. Today was a bad day where I considered whether I should return her to the breeder or sell her to someone else but James thinks this is just tiredness/stress/anxiety speaking and that Poppy is a really good little doggie who will have a good life with us.
-

If I had known 34 years ago what I know now,I would have had 2 dogs instead of two children. ;D
Just kidding son(my daughter won't see this 'cause she doesn't visit here)Love you to bits
-

:( Why, what's been happening today? Takes quite a long time for things to settle.
My parents are in the habit of taking in frankly rather disturbed rescue dogs; can be very hard work but worth it.
-
There must be something in the air because we've had a difficult evening here with The Ted. While playing he turned on Mrs JT and bit her face, drawing blood, and then went mental when I tried to pick him up to put him in his pen.
He'll be able to go out after Saturday and is going to training classes from Monday so hopefully he'll begin to calm down as he seems to get very over-excited at times.
-
I've had a weird up-and-down two weeks with Poppy. She's a lovely little dog and clearly fairly bright (she's mostly house-trained and fine in her crate) but she's doing the usual puppy biting and growling and it's really got me down. I've had several mornings where I've just lain in bed feeling sorry for myself whilst James looks after Poppy. Then it got better last Friday and I felt good about it all, followed by another bad day yesterday where I talked with James about whether we should give Poppy up to someone else. I know it's hard work with a puppy but I hadn't realised how much stress it would cause me, and I'm worried I'll pass my anxiety on to Poppy who is otherwise very well adjusted.
James thinks we should keep her, that she's fine, and he's being brill at looking after her whilst I'm feeling gloomy. But I just wish I could get over this and enjoy her more - at the moment I feel like I have made a big mistake getting another dog.
She has her second jabs tomorrow which means she can go out in a week's time which I am sure will improve matters a little. But eight days seems a long time...
-
Don't despair Helen...being able to go out will improve matters enormously, I'll bet.
At the age of ten, Cam is no puppy, but she is still a massive PITA if for any reason she doesn't get her two walks a day - as a rescue she has her own 'issues' and if she doesn't burn off all that nervous/anxious energy she gets all attention-seeking and keeps pawing at me and whining, etc.
A bit of exercise/somewhere new to explore may work wonders for Poppy.
-
Hope you soon feel better. Sounds like you have the canine equivalent of post natal depression! Once you can take her on exciting walks she will sleep more (and more deeply) leaving you free to ride your bike with all the associated endorphins to make you feel good. In a few more weeks you will feel like she has always been there and she will be settled and integrated into your life so much you won't be able to imagine her not being there. Hang on in there .. I'm sure things will soon get very much better!
-
I wondered if there is such a thing as post-puppy depression, and whether the lack of cycling (100 miles this month - this time last month I'd done 550) is having an effect on my mood.
Poppy just fell asleep in my arms on the swing outside and was lovely and non-bitey and such moments are very precious; I just tend to feel really dodgy in the mornings and evenings. Today James has done almost all the Poppy-care, leaving me to loaf around upstairs, and I think that has helped.
Tomorrow is second vaccinations and a week later she'll be out and about.
Oh, and if anyone wants to come and visit her in her cute puppy phase, get in touch!
-
All going pretty well with Poppy now. Tomorrow is the Big Day when she can go out for her first walk. We've practised some on-lead training around the garden but it's not the same as out in the Big Wide World.
Here she is today asleep on me on the garden swing chair after a short 1.5 mile cycle ride.

Today Poppy is 12 weeks old and we decided to take her to visit the marina and sit on our uncle's boat (our boat is currently out of the water having some repairs done). My husband would like Poppy to be a seadog to accompany him on some of his sailing trips in due course.

Yesterday I went to the first dog training class which was without doggies (an introductory session). I chatted to a lady next to me who had also felt very similar to me, i.e. very low when she got the dog and thinking she had made a mistake. She was so relieved to find out someone else felt the same. I'm feeling much better about Poppy now, mainly because she goes out and about with us to various places (went in the trailer to the pub last night, for example).
-
That's such good news. Sounds like you're over the hump and have lots of fun with Poppy in store
-
Yep, I'm feeling pretty much back to normal with a few caveats. I have booked up a concert in December which will be fun and I have some other stuff in my diary. The slightly better weather helps, as does getting more sleep (Poppy regularly sleeps 10 hours at night now; I wish we could get her - and ourselves - to stay up past 10pm though as we're getting up at 7am which feels rather early!)
It was a bit of a shock how much Poppy affected my mood in the first 3-4 weeks and the fact that I considered rehoming her (and had an offer from someone to take her) was pretty significant. However it's pretty clear she will be a lovely dog and I'm looking forward to her growing up and enjoying life with us.

Post natal puppy depression?
I'm glad it's worked itself out. :-*
-
There are hits on Google for post-puppy depression; it does seem to be a common thing.
She's doing so well but just did a wee at the top of the stairs; we think we've cracked housetraining (she's not done anything in the house for four days), then you get an odd one like that. Still it's easy to clean - poos in the house are much harder work but we haven't had one of those for three weeks, phew!
-
Today we took Poppy sailing and she wore her new lifejacket.

Glad to read that it seems things are settling :)
How did she take to sailing?
-
Like an old sea dog, me hearty!
-
She's fine with sailing (well, motoring, for half an hour) but was less comfortable this time as the lifejacket is very restrictive. She's like a sausage in it, can't really bend her side, and it meant she couldn't lie down very well. We will get her to wear the lifejacket around the house for a bit and maybe bend it a bit with our hands to soften it.
We took the lifejacket off her for the last fifteen minutes and she settled much better. Overall she's fine though.
-
Dogs and cats in lifejackets always make me chuckle. :)
The handle on the back always looks very convenient, although I guess it's really there for ease of lifting the animal out of the water, should it manage to get in.
Given Poppy's size, I imagine she's wearing the same one that a cat would wear? I could see a moggy getting very annoyed with that limited amount of manoeuvrability!
-
The handle is so that you can hook her with a boathook if she goes overboard - and, of course, to then lift her by hand as you bring her back to the boat. The reason I liked this lifejacket is it had a full neoprene area over the tummy so you're not lifting them on two thin straps (like the lifejacket we had for our labrador). However it does make it a rather rigid tube so we'll be wearing it on our arms/knees for a bit to soften it up, I think.
-
Today we took Poppy to the beach for her first visit. Lucy came along too.

The still frame that it finishes on is Fab of Poppy!

"This is my ball, you're not getting it!"
;D
-
Today we took Poppy to the beach for her first visit. Lucy came along too.
That is gorgeous. That is just how Poppy would look if she was being illustrated by E H Sheperd...
-
Went off to dog training today on the trike. This time we used the thicker cable ties on the basket lid (the holes were too big so Poppy could get her head out, but she can cut through small cable ties with her teeth!) and she wasn't able to bite her way through them. She realised this soon enough and just sat and enjoyed the ride with just the occasional whimper.
However, she is getting ideas above her station as to whereabouts on the trike she should sit.

She'll never be able to reach the pedals.
-
She has the Cocker spaniel really long eyelashes :) My Google also has these.
-
I was out all day yesterday and James reports that he found Poppy swinging like Tarzan from a lead which was hanging off a hook outside.
So he invented her a doggy punchbag/swinging toy which is suspended from our garden swing chair.
He moved the chair seat bit and tied a plastic milk bottle with about a litre of water in it onto some ropes with a rubber ring toy on as well for good measure.
She spent ages attacking it, jumping all over it and generally loves it.
I tried to take a quick video today but she was rather distracted by Lucy eating a yoghurt pot out of shot so she didn't play with it for long, but it gives you an idea.

Poppy has lost her first tooth.
So it's goodbye to puppyhood and hello to young adulthood. Probably a good thing (I have struggled with the responsibility of puppyhood at times) but it does mean she won't be quite as sweet any longer. But still cute, I am sure.

A day in the life of Poppy...
Here's a start...
Wakey wakey, 8am, time to get up!
A quick stretch before going outside for a wee.
Can I have my breakfast now please?
First Lucy, as top dog, gets to eat hers - yesterday's leftovers. She wolfs down everything except the olives. Poppy looks on from the other side of the baby gate.
Finished my breakfast! In the kong and the bowling ball, some nice James Wellbeloved puppy kibble.
The necessary post-breakfast garden expedition.
Now Poppy is allowed to finish off what Lucy didn't want - the olives. Lucy looks on, feeling sure she shouldn't let Poppy eat her food, but not wanting to eat it herself!
Now off for a walk with Rose the Fox Terrier and some other people from a walking group Auntie Helen attends. First we have to greet Rose with the traditional Whirling Dervish dance.
Then off the lead, off in front with the people of the walking group.
Called back to Auntie Helen, Rose and her owner, Poppy decides to do some more playing.
Which involves lots of biting of faces.
Now Poppy has a stick!
After an hour's walk, punctuated by lots of playing, we're back at the car and Poppy goes into her crate in the boot.
Rose comes back for some more play whilst Auntie Helen and Rose's owner enjoy some tea and cake. Then the visitors return home and Poppy gets ready to settle down in the Study whilst Auntie Helen does some work.

(iii) Sleep.
(iv) Have munchies and/or go to loo.

Today Poppy went out in the bike basket again for six and a half miles (to dog training and back).
Here she is, still with the mistaken belief that she should sit on my seat (especially when she has muddy paws!)

Google used to do that too, til one day when he was about 1 1/2 years he got stuck in the cat flap coz he had got too fat and I heard scrabbling downstairs in the middle of the night ;D
I then fitted a larger dog flap!

There's posh for you! Indi gets a bowl, raised off the floor, on a plastic flower pot. Poppy gets a butler and fine crystal! I've no doubt the glass is filled with the finest and purest water, helicoptered in from some Swiss glacier run off. ::-) ;D

Ahem, German glacier run-off!

Cheapskate!

Some pics of Poppy from our walk today at Highwoods Country Park in Colchester.

You can see we gave Poppy quite a short haircut last Thursday.
Here she is with Lucy, both of them pretending to be ruminants.
And this is a pic which went a bit wrong but is funny - she was standing nice and still looking at the camera but leapt up and started running towards me just as I took the photo.

Boing!

Poppy has been spayed today!
The house was weirdly quiet after we dropped her off at the vets. We're used to her collar jingling (she wears a cat bell) as she follows us around from room to room. Lucy the dog clearly enjoyed the peace and quiet.
She's now back. She's got a very dirty face and ears (wet dog food) and is incredibly sleepy (see pics below).
She had to have two baby teeth removed, her upper canines - the adult ones had come through and not knocked out the baby teeth so they were taken out. She was also microchipped.
I like sleepy cockapoos! Not so keen on the bill though...

Can you tell where she's sitting?
-
Poor old Poppy. After a good night's sleep she was still moaning rather a lot this morning and kept licking her underneath.
I checked her wound and could see some fishing line at the bottom of it - presumably those famous internal stitches. The vet said bring her straight round so they had a look at her - apparently the vet who did the surgery yesterday didn't quite tuck the stitches away properly so they will need to be trimmed in a week's time. In the meantime, the vet cleared her anal glands (they were full and he thought that was encouraging her to lick) and told me to get a child's t-shirt for her, rather than give her a lampshade. So a quick trip to Tesco and here she is:
A nice Thomas the Tank Engine t-shirt. I have no idea if she's into trains, but as she likes bicycles and boats I expect she would be!
She seems much more lively this afternoon. Sigh. But the t-shirt is taking all her chewing attention and she hasn't looked at her belly since we got home!
-
Another trip to the vets this morning.
Poppy kept sitting down oddly as she was doing two days ago (when her anal glands were full). She did a couple of tiny poops and yelped in pain with both of 'em. I decided that as the weekend was approaching, but the vets are open Saturday morning, I ought to get her checked out again.
It turns out she was a bit constipated so the vet sorted her out (yuck) and advised I make her drink more water. She has also been scratching her belly which is because her wound itches - I bought her a bigger babygrow that I could do up properly so that any scratching will just get the babygrow and not her wound. Of course she's irritated by wearing her t-shirt but generally seems to be settling down now. Here she is with me demonstrating how it does up:
And here she is demonstrating the hole I cut in it for her tail!
Let's hope she's OK from now on. The vet said I shouldn't really be walking her (I have taken her on short roadwalks) so she's confined to the house now for a couple of days. Which will be fun.

Poppy Sunshine, nine months old today

Just look at that face! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. :D
-
Is she still snack size? ;D
-
Ah bless! She has grown up to look remarkably like my Google only black not brown!
-
Is she still snack size? ;D
6.25kg and the size of a cat.
So yes.
But a rather sharp, bitey mouthful I expect.
Indi and Poppy will have to go for a walkies together very soon to see what they make of each other. Poppy has two Alsatian friends that she's a bit wary of when they run quickly towards her but otherwise she's fine and much bossier than a dog of her size has any right to be.

...so she did. She rode on the back for three miles, then ran beside the trike for the final two miles. She's pretty quick for such a small thing!

Go poppy!

Hehe, what a good Poppy.

She's barely bigger than Talisker, and in a matching colour, but I don't think he'd approve. ;D
-
Poppy poorly so off to the vets in an hour. She was sick yesterday a few times, including all over James's side of the bed, and looks very subdued and unhappy this morning - she's spending all her time in her crate rather than running around.
I'm off to London at 11:30 and James is working until 4 so I can't leave Poppy as she is for four and a half hours. Hopefully the vet will sort her out!
-
Poppy appears to have had a bout of gastroenteritis, poor thing. She was very under the weather all yesterday, just sitting in her crate looking mournful or sleeping. We didn't give her anything to eat yesterday and she didn't look like she wanted anything anyway. This morning she's perked up a lot - she's still more quiet and dozy than usual but ate her breakfast (specially-cooked rice and white fish) and has kept it down so far, plus had a short walk.
-
Good news. :)
-
It's a real relief - dogs are normally so bouncy that when you suddenly find your dog is ill it's such a contrast.
Good thing we've got a Vax, too, to clear up all the vomit.
I'm hoping she'll be right as rain tomorrow.
-
I've just realised that it was poppy that I was playing with outside the Rose Cafe at the end of the FNRttC a couple of weeks ago. I simply had not put two and two together. What a lovely dog!
-
Thank you Alexb. And which cyclist in Lycra were you? ;-)
-
Poppy has now done 150 miles in the bike basket and, apart from woofing at dogs we're whizzing past and occasional squeaks at people, seems to be fine with it. We take her to the farm shop 3 miles away and she gets to run a bit of the way home along the country roads.
We now have a little boat (whilst we try to sell our big boat!) and until last week it was on our front lawn being fettled. Poppy enjoyed standing on it and being up high so she could see over the fences:

And here she is with skipper James
(http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx30/Auntie_Helen/Poppy/PoppyandJamesonRedbug4.jpg)
Boat is now at Brightlingsea. The plan is that Poppy will go for little day sails with James but we'll have to see how that goes.
In the bluebells last week (taken with mobile phone camera so not so good!)

Poppy clearly not a fan of Rachmaninov, or at least as I play it.
Camera is filming the cushion on top of the piano as I can't point camera at dog and play piano at the same time!

Good bit of filming! Gosh, don't I talk quickly...

Today is Poppy's first birthday! Doesn't time fly.
She's had a walk, some pressies and will have a longer walk later on today. She's also sat outside with us on the swinging garden chair enjoying the sunshine. Not a bad life for a doggie!
-
Birthday pressie from a friend - a wonderful picture:
-
Either Poppy has got a lot bigger, or the trike has shrunk in the wash. ;D
Does she get any birthday nosh? I get Talisker some salmon or prawns for his birthday. I don't think he'd appreciate cake, even with candles on it.
-
Now she's fifteen months old she's learning to drive.
Oh, and she's done 250 miles in the bike basket now! That's more than most people cycle in a year themselves :-)
-
Two ladies walked past our work compound the other day, with a puppy the spitting image of Poppy. I went and fussed it, and said "is that a cockapoo by any chance?" Yes, they said, only her Mum was a Cockapoo, and her Dad a poodle.
"Ah!" I said, "so she's a Cockapoopoo". They liked that! ;D
This one, BTW, was in training to be a hearing dog for the deaf.
-
Poppy is now alomost 18 months old.
I've been in Aachen for a couple of days. I gather from James that Poppy slept on the bed upstairs the night before last (don't know about last night yet). I suspect this might be the start of a new routine!
Oh, and the day I left for Aachen she stole a pack of mars bars from my case and ate one and a half. The sugar rush made her quite bonkers.

-
Has Poppy mastered the art of bringing what she fetches back to you? My Cockapoo Google likes to do the chasing and getting bit but fails to grasp that he needs to bring it back for a repeat performance!
-
Yes, but you have to have a second toy to then throw (which means she will drop the first one). She won't drop the first one if there's nothing else to run after.
Fortunately she'll go after sticks, frisbees, balls, whatever.
-

That's interesting, it must be a breed characteristic! The contrast between my cockapoo and my collie who drops the thing she retrieved right at my feet then stares at me intently is immense.
-
Does she bark in frenzied fashion while waiting for the ball to be thrown?
-
Nope, she sits like a good dog!
-
Morphy sits like a good dog if you tell him to, and you can also walk away for quite some distance before throwing and he waits until you throw before starting to run, but the default state is fairly high decibel.

Today we have been for a ride in the bike basket:

Just went out for a cycle ride on my own.
I went via the postbox and as I was cycling back along a road parallel to the main road (I live on the main road) I saw a horse up ahead. It wasn't keen on me so when it carried straight on I turned down a side road, Back Lane, which takes me to the main road. I could then carry on along that road and not spook the horse.
As I got to the bottom of Back Lane a Cockapoo ran around the corner. It was Poppy, loose, presumably running to find me. Fortunately she came straight over to me, jumped on my lap (you can do this on a recumbent) and I grabbed her by the collar and cycled her home (about 200 metres). She must have slipped out under the gate and run round our standard dogwalk route.
I live on a road which isn't too busy but along which cars do drive quite fast at times. And I wouldn't normally have been riding down Back Lane but would carried straight on, none the wiser that she got out. I dread to think what might have happened if that horse hadn't been there.
I'm still in semi-shock. Poppy's catflap was shut so I could go out and finish my ride. We're gonna have to do something to that gate...
-
We're gonna have to do something to that gate...
Electrified chicken wire!
-
Today is Poppy's birthday - she is two! Doesn't time fly!
-
Poppy had some bad mats in her tail so I decided to chop all the hair off and see what she looks like.
She doesn't like it and neither do I! Never mind, it'll grow back soon enough.

This is what it used to look like:
(that's her standing on 30kg of dog food - and she only weighs 6.5kg!)
-
Well, she'll now be comfortable in the hot summer weather... hang on... never mind...
-
Quicker drying, thobut...
-
Yeah, I took Astra's tail out last summer as I wondered what she'd look like without it when I clipped the rest of her...
Won't be doing that again either...she looked like a rat! ;D
-
I think Poppy's haircut is quite sympathetically done compared to some I have given Google!
e.g.

I love all your pics of Google's various 'dos. At least the stuff grows back quickly!

It sure does, unfortunately for him he is now due another appointment in my salon :demon:

Today the Popmeister did a 12 mile ride in the basket with me.
She previously has been a bit woofy; this time she just barked when passing somewhere she knew dogs lived. Because part of the route was new we were OK. We had trouble when a woman on a horse leading a very young horse wanted to pass - neither horse liked the trike and the barking dog was particularly off-putting too!
I detoured to Primrose Pork (our local pork rearer/butcher) and whilst I was in buying some fab sausages Poppy had a bit of a lie down.

She normally stands and sticks her head out through the bars.
She was so good that I reckon she might soon be able to come on a 30 mile group ride, if such a thing happens in our vicinity. Or perhaps part of a WARTY.

I just wish my iPhone camera was a bit better as she looked so fab with her nose squashed against the spindles!

Is she fully grown?
-
Yep, she's a little'un though, weighs just 6.5kg. She just fits through a cat flap, which is very handy!
-
Was that a hum of Cockapoo-bear?

The advantage of that place to sit, is that it saves on dusting and clearing cobwebs. Dog heads (and cat heads!) make surprisingly good dusters!

Vet trip today - she managed to injure her neck/cheek on a bit of sticking out tree.
Two weeks of antibiotics and we're supposed to bathe it in warm salt water twice a day. She won't let us anywhere near it at the moment so that will be a challenge!
She's very good at looking mournful today too. We will light a fire shortly as that should cheer her up, she likes to lie in front of the woodburner gently cooking!
-
Ouch GWS Poppy :)
-
Oopsie. I imagine she's small enough, that like a cat, given sufficient immunity to claws and teeth, you can do anything to her if necessary, even if she isn't about to be all that compliant!
Get well soon Poppy.
-
Awwww poor Poppy, GWS!
-
She's moping around a lot today again but we had James's bro and his kids over and she perked up a lot when we went out for a walk. When things are happening and she forgets about it she's fairly happy but she's back hiding under the duvet now they've gone.
It's oozing nicely which hopefully means anything dodgy is draining out. It's an almost pencil-width hole in her neck which must be a bit ouch at times.
Because she can't lick it she seems to be chewing her foot as a displacement activity now and again but hopefully that won't cause any issues for just a week or so while the neck hole heals.
She's a terrible patient though!
-
Ooze has turned to pus now, which she is rubbing with her front leg and then excessively licking that leg!
We finally managed to briefly (very briefly!) wipe at the wound with warm salt water. Had tried this since Saturday with no luck, which I think means it's not hurting quite as much. I need to have another go shortly and hopefully can wipe away a bit of the pus. I think it's getting matted in her fur which doesn't help (she absolutely hates anything that mats her fur and causes it to pull).
Her ears are a bit mucky with ooze so we're going to trim them (they'd got really long anyway).
Poor Poppy! The antibiotics are hopefully taking effect now and she seems marginally happier in herself today. She woke me up at 6am scratching (she was allowed on the bed last night as we feel sorry for her) so I feel slightly zombie though!
-
Pops is now seeming much better and we are allowed to look at the area of her neck. We are even allowed to occasionally bathe it with warm salt water.
She has unfortunately been sick a few times after her antibiotics so I've had to give her a couple of extras and today when she was sick James felt that there wasn't anything visible in it so we didn't give her another. I think, as she's halfway through the course, if she did lose one (she has two a day) then hopefully it's not the end of the world. She's not normally particularly sicky but does occasionally do this and it's a pain when it coincides with her antibiotics!
We are going to give her a haircut shortly (she's got her teddy bear look again) which will be interesting. I don't suppose we'll be allowed near her head with the clippers.
-
Poppy is 3 today!
I'm in Germany so unable to give her a birthday cuddle but I wished her happy birthday via Facetime last night.

Aww happy birthday Poppy!

Ah, time for that lovely wet dog smell. ;D
-
She doesn't smell when she's wet - it's a weird poodle feature. But most handy!

It's certainly not a spaniel feature, having had to bathe my brother's dog in the past!

Really pleased with this photo I took of Poppy this morning on Frinton beach - taken with an iPhone too!

She looks very cosy in there! My mother gave Layla a towelling 'sleeping bag' that we zip her into after a damp walk. She hates getting into it but once in it usually falls asleep on a convenient lap (like now) she gets warm and dry as a bonus!
-
Is she going to Germany with you and will she become a bilingual dog ?
-
She is indeed going to Germany with me und sie kann gut auf Deutsch bellen!

Wuff !

'Gebell' doesn't have quite the same ring, does it?

Gebell ist nicht so onomatopoetisch als wuff.

Poppy is now officially registered as a resident of Kempen

I have to pay Hundesteuer (dog tax) for her in due course - I think it's about 30€.
-
Wuff !
I believe that is spelt "Wüff!"
Nicht vuff??
-
Dog tax turned out to be rather more than 30€, in fact it was 63€. I also had to buy dog liability insurnace for her which was 72,64€ (the liability insurance for me as just 51,43€).
Still it's great having Poppy here with me in Germany and she's having a whale of a time. Dogs seem universally to be liked and lots of people stop and pat her when I'm out on walks.
She's decided she likes my velomobile now though.

My first attempt at tick removal today, using some special tick tweezers and with the help of my landlady. The tick was dead (Poppy is on Frontline) but hadn't fallen off on its own.
Needless to say, despite being careful the head remained in.
The vet is closed (it's Saturday) and so I'm inclined to just leave it, as lots of people say is OK, and just check it doesn't get infected. Apparently over a few weeks the dog's skin pushes it out like a splinter. It was a real rotter though, both my landlady and I tried several times to get the head out but it wouldn't come.

Keep bathing the area with warm salty water and it might help the head part come out. It is possible to gouge them out like a splinter using a needle if they will stay still for you. Ticks do make a kind of local anaesthetic (which is why they don't scratch them off themselves) so the dog sometimes won't feel it when you do it. The important bit with tick removal is to twist the tick round and round and round until it comes away without actually pulling it away from the dog at all. If you pull the head parts come off. The plastic green 'o'Tom' hooks are much better for this than other metal type tweezers that tend to muller the tick into bits and be an epic fail.
-
It was an epic fail but Poppy doesn't seem bothered by it now, fortunately.
My landlord had to remove five ticks from his legs today, apparently, and one still has its head in him. They used to have a long-eared dog so were forever removing them so I don't feel quite as bad that I failed with the first one. It was a very small tick, and dead, which didn't help much.
Potentially more exciting was that Poppy had a bee in her mouth the other evening but fortunately spat it out without it stinging her. Seeing as there are 14 beehives in the garden it's probably only a matter of time...
-
I noticed her scratching at the general tick head area today so had a look - it was actually a new tick in a similar place.
Yesterday the landlord, Frank, had told me he had removed five ticks from himself (he'd been moving beehives into some grassland so got very ticky) and he had borrowed a tick tool from the neighbour, a little plastic thing with a hammer nail-lifting type shape on it.
So I took Poppy downstairs and asked to borrow that tool and see if I had more success. He held onto Poppy, I wielded the tool and MAGIC, the tick came out perfectly, it didn't hurt Poppy or worry her at all, or even pull out any of her fur.
So I shall be buying one of these tick gubbinses if I can find one in the local pet shop.
Both ticks have been in her general armpit area. I keep her fur cut short so it's fairly easy to feel them. Both have also been dead by the time they were removed (Frontline doing its job).
I guess I shall be more experienced at all this by the end of my time here in Germany!
I now feel itchy though! I'm about to go for a walk - long trousers definitely in order!
-
I've more experience extracting ticks from cubs rather than dogs. As Feline says the twisting motion is important. The really important thing is to be aware of the risk of Lyme disease.

Sounds like it was an o'tom - easy on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OTOM-TICK-TWISTER-REMOVER-2-X-PACK-DOG-CAT-PEOPLE-HORSE-PET-/251140859454?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Kitchen_Steamers_Cookers_PP&hash=item3a7929663e (many other vendors)
-
It was similar to an O'Tom but a bit simpler and more plasticky.
The O'Tom looks a bit more upmarket so I'll order myself one in due course.
-
The good news is if you're using frontline or similar even though the ticks will attach before they die, they don't have chance to pass on tick borne diseases before they die so you shouldn't have any problems other than the local reaction to the inflammation :)
-
Can I use Frontline on Cubs? ;)
Smithy: Akela? look, I found a tick on my private bits
Akela: No Smithy, I don't want to see it! Take care of it and take it home to your parents

Lion cubs yes, human cubs it would be an off-label use. I have Frontlined my own kids (for headlice) ;)
You should take a pot of Vaseline with you and get them to cover the tick with it, it prevents the tick from breathing via the air holes and it will asphyxiated to death slowly.

Sorry, Feline, this is bad advice. Whilst the tick is asphyxiating, it will vomit back into the blood supply any blood already sucked together with any Lyme disease infection present.

No need to apologise to me, it's the parent of Smithy who is owed the apology ;)
Leaving it there to transmit the infection until they go home is very bad advice in my opinion. Certainly if that happened to my child you would be getting a very serious complaint. If you feel unable to deal with the tick yourself then you should surely be contacting the parents of the affected cub immediately so they can decide what best to do there and then.
Pulling a tick off leaving the head parts in is not ideal, but is definitely better than doing nothing. AH was absolutely right to do this with Poppy.
-
Naturally when this happened it wasn't as simple as my (attempted) humorous quotation and yes parents were consulted. The advice we got was that if the tick was small, then it was better to leave it be for 24 hours when the camp ended.
For a leader to do something about a tick in that location would be a seriously big no-no!
The biggest risk with a tick is doing anything that makes them vomit.

The groomer commented on Friday that Poppy had broken three toenails. Well today she jumped out of the car, sat down and chewed her foot for a bit and I found another nail on the ground. This seems odd - anyone know what might be going on?
-
Poppy has just been to the vets as she has Kennel Cough. Despite having the vaccination here last month and not having been in kennels - she caught it from Neck who is a dog that visits here sometimes. He was here Sunday and Monday; Lara (the daughter who lives here) said "Neck keeps being sick" but I noticed he was coughing up phlegm rather and did wonder about it. Anyway, the next day I bumped into Neck's owner and she said he had kennel cough so I've been keeping an eye on Poppy and sure enough this morning we had a small amount of coughing - not much, but I went straight to the vets (seeing as tomorrow is the weekend).
Whilst there she did a couple of proper coughs spitting up phlegm and he said yes, it is kennel cough, but very early. Despite the vaccination it's rife around here with lots of different strains so no big surprise.
She's on antibiotics now (unfortunately ones I am allergic to so I have to handle them with latex gloves) and I also got the vet to look at her claws that are breaking/being chewed off and he said not to worry about that.
Only 41 Euros for the consultation, antibiotic injection and a week of antibiotic tablets so I think that's a pretty good price. And I didn't need an appointment, it's just a drop-in surgery!
