Title: Landscapes

Scrolling through, couldn't find a thread for something like this:

Sunday 22 April. Looking past Berwick church towards the Long Man of Wilmington

Commiserations. The 'intermittent showers' forecast proved unfounded down here!

It certainly was. The picture was taken about 2 miles from the nearest road - a very quiet spot where we saw less than a handful of other amblers during the walk. It looks really good blown up full size. I must get a print of it at some point.

This is my current wallpaper, from Cademuir above Peebles, I love the way the farmer has created a Battenburg Cake !   The road that you can just make out at the bottom is a very nice ride.

North of Arlington reservoir, looking back at the South Downs, yesterday Sunday 28th July. At the extreme far right you can just make out the farmer already gathering in hay, wheat possibly.

Some of Lincolnshire is flat... and some of it is not...

Do you have a picture of the bits that aren't flat? ;)

We've just got back from visiting the apartment in Liguria we've inherited. It's a bit of a white elephant - it's going to take some work and expense to get it into a usable state but will probably be worth it because the location is gorgeous, about ten miles inland from the coast, halfway up a steep, wooded valley (on the edge of the Maritime Alps). I experimented with the panorama setting on the iPhone and took these pictures (click for bigger) - not great works of photography but they give an impression of the setting...

This is the view from the balcony of the apartment:
(http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k170/smutchin/IMG_1011.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k170/smutchin/IMG_1011.jpg)

The view from the car park about half a mile down the road - the apartment is in the village on the left of the pic:
(http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k170/smutchin/IMG_1007.jpg) (http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k170/smutchin/IMG_1007.jpg)

(Posting the pics here is partly an act of marketing, since the long-term plan is to make the apartment available for holiday lets.)

Yes, I applied a graduated filter to desaturated that bit, which made the yellow colour pop out even more.

An interesting site for a chainsaw course, plenty of trees, but plenty of chances to hang them up. I speak as a chainsaw instructor. A lot of the course could be spent dealing with trees stuck in other trees.
Title: Re: Landscapes
Post by: docsquid on 14 June, 2013, 08:41:31 pm
That was the main point. Part of the assessment is to hang up trees and then deal with them. Actually I managed to fell a lot of trees without hanging up as there were racks within the forest into which to fell. Provided your aim was good, then they rarely got hung up. They were very long/tall though, even the little ones.

That peninsula connected by a shingle tombolo is interesting. It's limestone, and the hole is a quarry, there's a lime kiln as well, the shingle is very varied. There was occasional shelling in WW2 from the flotilla stationed to counter the threat from German Pocket Battleships.

The beach is at Rispond.

Hi there, Riggers :)

Here's a recent one--we went to the annual festival at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute this fall. I was itching to see the place, and our tickets for last year's festival were cancelled when Congress shut down the federal government. As it turned out, we saw a lot of crowds and only a few animals--but that's what you get when the place is only open one day per year, I guess.

SCBI is a huge place--it used to be an Army quartermaster camp that raised horses. This spot is called Racetrack Hill--there's an old horse track around the hill, and a small horse graveyard. Looking west, like in this picture, you're facing toward the very northern end of Shenandoah National Park and the town of Front Royal.

It is baffling why, when Aliens choose to make contact with us, they choose this place isn't it?

Having said that, I reckon there's potential for some fairly breath-taking landscapes there.

Until fairly recently it was quite difficult to source local Rapeseed oil, most supermarkets sell Spanish stuff.

Now Pratt's Farms  (Grately, Hampshire) have their own pressing/bottling operation (so do your bit if you spot it on the shelves).

Either I don't mind the smell of it or I've just become oblivious to it, after cycling past the stuff for 20 years.

Note. I'm not sure a decent Marketing company would stick with the name "Rape" though.  I'd change it to "Golden Angel Oil" or similar.

Yep, I'd go along with that.  On the left, you're looking across the Eskdale valley to the Upper Eskdale fells.  Not at all sure what the blue stuff in the upper third of the photo is, mind.

The Canadians went with 'Canola (http://www.canolainfo.org/canola/)'

Brits generally are very anti-rape, yellow blight and all that... however

It's a good break crop from cereals, yet uses the same machinery so from an agronomy point of view makes sense
It's not as big an allergen as people think- because it smells it gets blamed but the pollen doesn't spread as much as (say) tree pollen
That's where the bio-diesel's going to come from
Locally grown oils are less environmentally damaging than imported

sure is

I did 2 days on the Loch and saw golden eagles, sea eagles, otters, fallow deer, red deer, thousands of moon jellyfish and the hundreds of bats leaving Knock house. I then headed around to grasspoint to watch the shorties and harriers, plus the multitude of other birds etc., fantastic place.
