That's not a knife...
« on: 26 February, 2013, 08:37:50 pm »
This is a knife!

That I made :)

It first started as a bit of steel that we heated up a wee bit ...

And then we beat the living day life out of it ...

Then I put a handle on it

Then some filing ...

Getting closer to the finished article ...

In the tea break we threw a few axes around ...

Then the polishing ..

oooohhhh shiny !

The finished knife among the other 8 master works ...

A more detailed and longer write up about my day at Barrytown

Here is more photo that you can shake an sharp object at

Thank you Peli for letting me do this and being there to snap away.

Oh there was also a massive swing, wheeeeeeeeee!

That's f*&kin fantastic! Very impressive and a knife that'll serve you well for a long time, I hope.

A fine beard too, if I may say so.

What a great day out.

I'm seriously tempted to try doing something similar. There is a guy in Devon offers something similar:

are you allowed to have a knife in this pub?

It's very shiny and I'm disappointed that I'll have to go to West Coast NZ to make one!
It's a real boys' day out, innit?

British elf and safety seem far away.

Yup the safety elf's were not to be seen.

We had around five minutes or even less - there machines here that can hurt you, hot things that burns steel and that pointy and sharp thing you are making guess what it can do if you end up putting it into someone else - so don't be a numpty. I might have miss quoted him  a bit but I know that it was not much longer than that and along these lines.

And that feeling I got from the rest of NZ and Oz - if you hurt yourself you are the one who was a numpty, that was the general attitude.

Mrcharly: now that looks like a great course. Might do that one day.

That error should now be fixed, sorry for the breakage chaps. I did an update of the gallery and for some reason it decided that the names of the images should have more _ than . in them without telling me.

Dave Budd is one of the regular contributors over on the British Blades forum (just the place if you want to get into knife making, building your own forge, steam hammers, leather work etc, etc) and is a very highly regarded chap.
