Tourist in Leeds aka which pub to go to?
« on: 04 August, 2015, 10:43:38 am »
Friends of mine from Denmark are raiding visiting Yorkshire and this time they are bringing money instead of a knife to your throat.

So they want to go ... shopping [rolls eyes in fear and disgust] why in [insert whatever name of divine being you do offerings too] would you do that, while visiting foreign soil? I do not understand that part of "holidaying" at all, the way I do visit other places is to stay as far away from packed beaches, tourist traps, museums, attractions, shopping centres etc.

Happy to see a castle, church, town etc from the distant hill or quiet country road while cycling past. Provisions are gathered in the normal Viking way, storm into local shopping centre/mall/emporium, grab needed food, throw credits at staff and then leg it to remote parts.

So it looks like I might be joining them in Leeds, to be a guide ... [shudders]

Therefore what I need to ask from them is: where to go and spend their hard earned cash in Leeds and what stuff to look at?

And the question from me is: which pub is the best pub? Because I know I would need a good drop of good ale after being to the big city.

Ta.

If they like music - visit Hobgoblin or Northern Guitars.

Royal armouries for exhibitions of, um, well, weapons.

Betties in Ilkley (if they have lots of money)

The Corn exchange for an interesting building full of shops and cafes

Any of the old theatres for an evening out, even if just to gawk at the incredibly kitschy over the top décor.

Trinity Centre for shopping.
The Red Chilli for Chinese food. My favourite restaurant in Leeds.
I cannot help you on the pub front - sorry, but there are loads.

Get them out into the Dales on their bikes!

Don't think it will be a all nighter, we need to get back Skiptonia.

I just found this - http://www.leeds-camra.com/breweries-in-leeds/4567790666 If it is up to date I could spend a few hours there :)

Would love to. Lad cycles, though lass don't. Peli can, but I can't :(

We are going to the Lakes for a few days and there will be a visit to Tan Hill.

Quite liked it. Microbrewery pub. VERY odd meat menu. Chef is a Satan's Slave.

North Bar in New Briggate has a good selection of craft beers including Belgian and USAnian. Take lots of money because they have a lot of beer!

MSeries used to recommend the Midnight Bell, which is attached to the Leeds Brewery.

Decent beer (a few years ago), and not too hipsterish at seven in the evening.

Not a patch on Tan Hill, mind.

If you are awaiting a train and want a beer, ignore the Yorkshire Rose (the one in the station), walk over the road and down the spiral steps.  Over the road from there is the Scarborough Taps.  A proper old fashioned drinkers pub, dark wood panelling, engraved glass in the windows and LOTS of hand pumps of beers.

For food, I REALLY like The Pit, admittedly not traditional Yorkshire food, but really really good: http://arcinspirations.com/pit/menu/food
I feel like Captain Kirk, on a brand new planet every day, a little like King Kong on top of the Empire State

For shopping the Victoria Quarter arcades look lovely and are full of posh shops.
For eating Leeds indoor Market has a fantastic Algerian / Moroccan stall that does fantastic wraps with humus and chicken or lamb and pickles etc.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.
