oops what happened there?
« on: 09 August, 2015, 09:21:54 pm »
A few weeks ago, I packed my over sized backpack and hopped on a plane to go and have a looksee at what the UK was like.

This month, these few weeks have turned into 20 years.

Anywhoo looks like I will be staying a wee bit longer and the kettle just boiled, anyone fancy a cuppa?

I can sympathise.  I've been here just over 16 years.  The plan was a few years here then we'd move to the US.  That all didn't happen in so many different ways.
;D  Andrij.  I pronounce you Complete and Utter GIT

Where did life begin for you, then Woolly? Its fascinating to hear how other folks life has developed.  Mine has taken a turn today, in that I have achieved a long held desire, to buy another motorcycle, and it hasn't resulted in divorce, Mrs W actually likes the BMW I have bought. I've not moved countries, but the pull of rural France is calling, and those property prices.....

Nothing less expected from those bloody vikings...   ;)

Finally got to chat to Woolly briefly at Malham last December.   Perhaps we need to go again so I can have a longer chat.   :)

We really ought to go back to Malham.

Woolly, you exemplify the best of Englishness without even being English.  I hope you stay for another 'couple of weeks' at least!

Just learned yesterday that the Yorkshire dialect still uses many Danish/Viking/Scandinavian words (more than the rest of the UK), probably why I feel at home here. One that I didn't know is lad :)

Having read that link I'm beginning to think that the vikings only conquered Yorkshire.   Much of Clarion's lexicon is in there...   :demon:

There are more, & there are also the many words (most of the basic English vocabulary IIRC) which are common to north & west Germanic, such as man, hand, finger, what, that, here, there, many, & so on.

Anglo-Saxon, innit? :)

We had a similar convo at the BBQ, the areas that the Vikings settled (basically the majority of what is now England, north of Nottingham) uses Norse words that at not, generally, understood or used elsewhere.  Melvin Bragg has written a book on just this subject: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2003/nov/15/referenceandlanguages.historybooks

Yeah, but '"No more than 150 words" were accepted from Old Norse into an Old English vocabulary of some 25,000 words.' is a bit odd, when the majority of the vocabulary was shared already. The comparison should be between the number of new words & the previously unshared vocabulary. Got 'man' from Anglo-Saxon, not Old Norse? Really? It was the same word in both languages! And so on.
