Meanwhile, across the border, they have metric units and no sense of humour:

I learned to skate on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. Well, I saw learned, like there was some kind of endpoint to this activity that involved me staying upright for more than several seconds. To be honest, by the end, I was hoping someone would replace me with a stunt double. Canadians may have mocked my lack of ability, but give me a steep slope, some snow, and a liberated school dinner tray, and I got snow skills.

The Leftpondians in the state of Texas are having problems with low temperatures & a surfeit of cold white stuff (-25 & the power's out).

Some of their local politicians are telling them to "man up" .....  Do they put something in the water over there ?

They had something similar only a couple of years ago, though that time my chum Houston Danny had, IIRC, thoughtfully chosen to visit his Aged Parent in California.  Which caught fire not long afterwards, though I don't think these two facts are related.

I'm told there are three separate power grids in Usania: East, West, and Texas. So when the Texan voles aren't running, the voles from elsewhere can't be tempted to take their place.

I expect it's not quite as simple as that but.

And apparently the Texan one is State-owned, which smells of Socialism and therefore serves nicely as a blunt instrument with which to beat swivel-eyed privatisation fanboiz over the head :demon:

It's not.  There's Canadians involved in the big ones.  And Alaska has two grids of its own (I suspect BEARS make interconnection problematic or something).

But for these porpoises, it's sufficient to know that:

a) Like the UK and Europe, these grids aren't synchronised with each other.  So you can't just wire them together to borrow some electrons.  Like us, there'e some limited import/export capability via HVDC connections.
b) Texas has its own grid for ideological "sticking it to The Man" reasons.
c) Just like the Californians, they did capitalism, and failed to engineer their power systems in a way that could cope with rare, but entirely foreseeable, extreme weather.
d) Texas has a surprisingly large amount of wind power, much of which isn't working because (c), but this is a small portion of their total capacity, and the bulk of the problem is the natural gas infrastructure that isn't working because (c).
e) This is however a prime target for ideologically-motivated claims about the inadequacy of wind power, which can readily be disproved by observing the countless fully armed and operational wind turbines operated in ludicrous weather by extremely competent Scandiwegians, and indeed the more pragmatic Leftpondians from higher latitudes.

The US has always had shonky infrastructure through government stuff being purposefully underfunded and run-down so they can say 'look, big government, it's terrible!' and then use that excuse to pass the buck to private companies who then give all the money to their shareholders and then claim 'well, it was like that when we got it, give us some more money or take it back' People in the UK might also be familiar with this playbook.

When I lived in New England, they had rolling brownouts through summers because they couldn't supply enough electricity to meet the a/c demand (because several reactors were offline and there was no spare capacity).

Arkansas has snow ploughs, Texas does not. Texan's laughed at the idea.

This road is on the border between Texas and Arkansas. Guess which side is which:

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that Tim lives in:
  • an underground bunker in the Idaho Panhandle so crammed with tinned food, bottled water and ammunition that there's barely room for Tim himself, or
  • Key West
Either way he'll have a generator the size of a 40’ shipping container, pride himself on living “off the grid*” and moan like buggery when SNO/hurricanes stop his diesel delivery.

Tim Boyd was the mayor of Colorado City, TX when he wrote those words, a post which he has since resigned rather abruptly. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/18/us/tim-boyd-mayor-colorado-city-texas.html

Mr Boyd seems to have followed the right wing practice of trying to make government as small as possible, while making sure he gets paid a fat salary by said government. Of course he just might be a MAGA wearing AR-15 carrying maniac, too.
Note to PB: I believe that the AK-47 is a Russian weapon developed during the Soviet era, and as such unacceptable to rightwing American loonies. The AR-15 is the US-designed assault rifle favored by mass murderers, rightwing loonies, and other very fine people.

Which made wonder if there is a place called Texas City in Colorado.  Apparently not.  I do know there is a place called "Nowhere" as we have passed it several times on our trips out there.  I get Therapy? as an earworm everytime...
