Nice one Emma!
Emma Pooley has become the first British woman to win the Road World Championships time trial with a dominant victory in Australia.
The 27-year-old clocked a time of 32 minutes, 48.44 seconds to beat Judith Arndt of Germany by 15.17 seconds.
New Zealand's Linda Melanie Villumsen finished third.
Pooley, who won the time trial silver medal at the 2008 Olympics, had to change her bike at the last minute when officials found a discrepancy with it.
The incident happened just before the start line but Pooley was able to put it behind her and was quickest at every checkpoint on the 22.9km (14.22 mile) course in Geelong.

15seconds!
STONKING

Amazing that she weighs only 50Kgs. Half of that must be in her legs!
A fantastic ride, as was that of Jeannie Longo to come fifth just before her 52nd birthday.

Fantastic!
And Longo is a legend.
-
Great stuff by Pooley. Let's hope she can repeat in the road race.
I wouldn't get too effusive with the praise for Longo.
-
Fantastic news
-
Wow, that's quite a margin! Well done Emma

Brilliant performance!
I was trying to avoid finding out* until I watched the highlights (British Eurosport from 4pm this afternoon) but I couldn't resist. Absolutely fantastic news.
d.
*the title of this thread doesn't really help.
-
I watched it this morning live instead of news. It was on 301.
Best not watch mens time trial or I will be late for work.

Wish I'd known. I looked for it but couldn't find it. What is 301 anyway?
d.
-
PS can we get the thread title changed for the benefit of those who don't want spoilers? Too late for this one, but there are several more events to come. On which subject...
Come on, Cav!

-
301 is BBC-I freeview interactive channel. I was looking at what passes for ceefax on freeview and spotted the menu item Live Cycling, so I pressed it and skipped my morning shower.
-
Gah! Didn't occur to me to look on the BBC - I was browsing the sport channels.
(301 is aka "the red button" for Sky viewers)

Care to expand?
Puzzled of Crawley.
-
There have been persistent suggestions of 'enhancements' to Ms Longo's performance. He may be referring to that.

Well is the top level of women's cycling really of such a poor standard that a 50 year old is competitive?
If Longo was a bloke, say Larry Armstrong, what would you think?
But aside from that natural suspicion, there have been strong hints recently by a respected cycling journalist that Longo is due for some sort of come-uppance.
-
Malcoml Elliot is still elite-level at 48.
Sport is about extraordinary people.
(and yes, the womens game is less competitive than the mens, its a numbers thing). <\flamebait>
-

Nonesense. The British Premier Calendar/Tour Series is not the top level of mens cycling. It might be categorised as elite level here in the UK but it's a long way off - which is one reason why Elliot's still relatively competitive.
You're right about the numbers game though - there were under 40 starters for the women's TT this morning.
-
I've just caught this on EuroSport. The Polish commentary was rather good, one of the two commentators managed to break at least half a century of national habit and pronounce -ey as 'ee' rather than 'eh'. Once. Let's see if it catches on with that football place. Anyway, I found myself rather pleased with the national colours rather than sponsors' shirts, but then I noticed sky written on Emma's sides. Oh well never mind.

Exactly. You only have to ask yourself if Elliot is as fast as he was when he was Pooley's age. Of course he isn't or he would be a pro tour rider.
If Longo gets busted it won't be the first time.
-
Won't it? I wasn't aware she'd failed a test ever*
* Doesn't mean I don't think she might have used drugs
-
Valiant effort by Millar but it was never going to happen, was it? It was always a one-horse race. For Millar even to get as close as he did was magnificent.
d.
-
Yes, I thought Millar had developed into a super-domestique with the chance of getting an occasional opportunistic stage win in a grand tour, but it seems that he can still TT with the best when he's at the top of his form and fitness. Tony Martin must have been disappointed
with the puncture [damn] with having punctured - he was storming at the end and would probably have had a comfortable silver without it. And Richie Porte will be back - who'd heard of him before this season?
(I'm still ambivalent about DM though - can't help still thinking of him as 'Drugs cheat David Millar')
-
I'm hoping that Messrs Porte and Rogers will be riding the Commonwealth Games - will make a good opportunity for a rematch with DM

Beryl Burton was still racing and winning at the top level in her 50s.
-
Nicole Cooke did everything right till the last 50m when she did not notice the bunch sprint start behind her so she finished fourth instead of first.
-
Yes, that was a shame, she put in two big attacks and it looked like the 2nd would succeed. It would have been nice to see her win, she's had too low a profile this year.
I was looking at Bronzini's palmares, and she's quite a sprinter.
-

Not strictly true.
Beryl Burton won her last Worlds Gold at the age of 29... that is the top level. By her mid 30's she'd seen the last of her Bronze at top level.
She did win a chunk of national stuff at a ripe old age though.

I was just impressed that she gave it a go. It's a lottery in that sort of finish:
- had she gone earlier, the kraut might have tucked in then come past, or
- if she'd sprinted EXACTLY as Vos etc came through, she still had to outsprint 2 top-level sprinters, with the fatigue from a long attack in her legs.
fantastic entertainment, anyway.
Pushing the sour grapes aside [cos I don't think this changed the outcome of the race]; the squad-size rules aren't entirely fair, are they? In the TT (or any other sport without drafting), fair enough, a strong nation gets more entries. But in a bunch race, it totally skews the outcome. Still, I guess it's been that way a long time ...
-
Is the mens race on tv live, had a look at Eurosport but looks like highlights?
-
It's on at 7:35 am, that's gotta be live?
-

Yes. And Cav has a chance. Not much of one but still a chance.

-
Oh crap -- I was just off to bed when I noticed this thread too.
-
Yes Yes Yes.... nooooooo
Well the guy from Grimstad deserved it.
Silver for Breschel
Bronze for Davis
-
What an amazing race. Hugh Porter outdid himself tho completely missing Gilbert being caught about 2km from the finish.
-
Loved that bit just after Thor H crossed the line, with the scrum of people rushing around the winner, picked up his bike and gave it a kiss 8)
-
Did it show off Australia well chaps?
-
It did look nice Grub.
Is Melbourne your old patch?
-
Yep, well that was the city where I worked. I came from the eastern suburbs.
Geelong was in the west but it was not really that far away for the Aussie way of travel.
Just down the road ;D

Very Minor Claim to Fame:
John Paul (17yo scottish lead-out sprinter) was training with me 2 years ago, DPCC member. (He used to criticise me for non-helmet wearing every week!)
-
Are we talking Commonwealth Games here? I saw him in the Team Sprint this morning.
There were 3 ex-members of my club in action on the track, and the highest GB finishers in the Worlds U23 & Women's RR were also ex-members.
-
Oooops, yes, Commonwealth of course!
(i was fooled by the complete lack of discussion in this forum - odd, does noone watch if Hoy/Pendleton aren't playing? )
-
He took the spot that I thought Kev Stewart was going to ride.. Man 1.
Don't know why there wasn't an English team.
