Form an orderly queue, gentlemen.

Damn :demon:
Our little secret is out :'( :'(
I wish........ ::-)

Hmmm, I'm going off her a bit. Her head seems to be getting somewhat large.
Yeah, yeah, she is really fit. But my gosh, don't she just know it! :P

So what? I definitely would.
-
She's nearly as arrogant as Lance Armstrong, but then we don't like arrogance in our womenfolk, do we.
-
She is a media tart, and is known in The Chateau as "That media tart Pendleton".
-
Mrs. Wow is exactly the same.
Fourteen ball of wool a day sometimes. I play second fiddle to a sheep and I know it.
But I've got a beautiful blue hand-spun hand-knitted merino cycling hat. What more does a chap need?
-
I play second fiddle to a sheep and I know it.
I think you've mentioned your Welsh connections previously :P
-
Well she was very nice and not at all arrogant or big-headed when I met her at Revolution the other month.
-
So a genuine British Sporting Goddess tells a journalist that she's seeing a bloke who she doesn't want to settle down with?
So she knows she looks good in the buff and she's confident about her amazing body?
So it's quite possibly more about the sex than the dinner date?
So bloody good on her.
If that's what it takes to win gold, then she should go for it. I'm only disappointed that she didn't say she's actually got two fellas on the go. Or a fella and a young lady.
Or both :)
-

Or a red haired London fixie chick....
I'm not sure this really shows her as being arrogant or full of herself to be honest.
She's very very good at what she does and the press are naturally going to sell the sex angle, and the fact that she's attractive, I'd doubt she was the one driving the direction the questions headed.
And there is very likely a big gap (as JT has seen) between the media persona and the reality.
-
Or a fella and a young lady. Or both :)
At the same time ;D
I see this heading for NSFW
-
I think she's pretty modest, bearing in mind she holds several world championships. Is she not allowed a little self-belief?
As for her personal life, so what if she's got a f***-buddy?
-
God, she does love herself, don't she.
I agree and I don't like her because she is skinny and I am jealous. :P But V, she may have an solution to your cycling fitness issue..... but can woolly take it!! ;)
-
Y'know, too many women don't take up cycling, because they think it's a "macho" thing, or (gods forbid) they might find themselves looking all muscley. Then along comes a sexy female who proves that it's possible to kick the arses of all the testosterone-doping gender-uncertain iron-curtain-shot-putter-looking old-style female atheletes, and does it all wearing make-up. And what do we do? We slag her off for being too girly. >:(
I say "Go Vicky!" :)
-
As for her personal life, so what if she's got a f***-buddy?
I have no problem with that. I'd happily be her f*** buddy, although I'm a bit out of her league :P
She's an amazing athlete, but her head is so rapidly going up her own arse that it's coming back out of her head again! (An interesting mental image!)
I guess we mere mortals like our sports stars to be modest. The most popular ones always are. That's the very reason Armstrong is fairly unpopular amongst cycling fans (glory hunters and Man U supporters aside). Can't take anything away from what he achieved, but he's a bit of a knob.....
-
I can't see any arrogance at all in what she said. Good grief, what the hell's the matter with a confident woman, you lot? And you've got to remember that the article has been edited to make it as controversial as possible. And she got heavy criticism for posing nude and was forced to justify it. And the paper is pissed off with her because she didn't speak to them - all they've done is a cut and paste job of something printed elsewhere, and journalistic pride demands that they chop it up and change the meaning so they can make it look like they've done some work.
Edit: that article was written by the Daily Arsewipe Mail! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=557434&in_page_id=1770
All the Bedfordshire rag did was tag on "Miss P did not return our calls." Please don't judge one of our sporting heroes (or anybody else for that matter) by what's written in the Daily Heil.
And the Mail article was a cut and paste job from the MoS: http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/pages/live/articles/sport/othersports.html?in_article_id=557470&in_page_id=1781
And I suspect the MoS article was a cut and paste job from an interview done by another paper.
For a slightly less sex-obsessed angle on her, try this: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/more_sport/article3137815.ece
Or this: http://sport.guardian.co.uk/cycling/osm/story/0,,2260308,00.html
But it's all distorted. I would have thought you lot were cynical enough never to trust a newspaper article 100%. You shouldn't judge her without getting to know her personally.
-
Confidence is hot.
Let's face it when you're dipping with palmares and the darling of the sporting meeja, it's bound to pump you up a bit. So what? It doesn't last forever, enjoy it while it lasts.
And incidentally Vicky, if you're having a dry spell come Beijing, PM me.
-
I have the same problem with Bill Gates. ;D
-
I can't see any arrogance at all in what she said. Good grief, what the hell's the matter with a confident woman, you lot?
Yeah, I absolutely agree. Couldn't see anything arrogant in that. Actually, the bit about why she posed 'nude' seemed quite humble, acknowledging that she is all too human:
"I won't look like this for ever ..."
-
She still irritates me muchly. Probably because she shares my name and she is all round better than me at everything.
I have the same problem with Bill Gates. ;D
Whilst I can't deny that Ms Pendleton is a better cyclist and Chairman Bill is a smarter businessman, I think you're both infinitely more gorgeous than your famous namesakes.
:-*

Get your coat pelli, we've pulled. 8)

God, she does love herself, don't she.
But V, she may have an solution to your cycling fitness issue..... but can woolly take it!! ;)
I'm sure Woolly would very much enjoy being Ms Pendleton ("Goddess on a Bike")'s f*** buddy.
I got everything I need in you my dear, and I'm pretty sure that she might be better than you on a bike atm but in the bed that is another story, nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more ..... :)
-
I thought she was just being matter-of-fact and honest. If you are one of the best in the world at something, false modesty is a very unbecoming trait. So is blowing your own trumpet too much.
I can't claim to know a great deal about Ms. Pendleton, but that interview seems to display a certain amount of "WYSIWYG".
I think Kathy is absolutely right and I don't think it's a good idea to put anyone on a pedestal, either from the "phwooar" point of view or because she is more athletically successful any of us.
-
Ah- the Bedfordshire on Sunday paper, or as it's known locally here, the cat litter on Sunday (as that's all it's good for).
Mind you, I can't see what the problem is. Basically she's saying train hard, get good muscles, win a few medals, have some nooky and enjoy yourself whilst you're able to. Better that, than hanging on a street corner drinking cans of lager and kicking old ladies.
Good for her.
-
God, she does love herself, don't she.

Marj
GillP
The London Ladies & Annie & Nutkins
that makes her about 9th on a list of flavourite cycle buddies

Although I am in awe of Vicki P for her achievements I find her to be far from the most pretty or sexy female British cyclist.
For pretty I offer Lizzy Armitstead (left if you aren't familiar with GB kit):
And for sheer 'Oh God do it to me!' sexy, Shanaze Read:

God, she does love herself, don't she.
Look at the contrast between Victoria Pendleton and the usual role model girls are bombarded with. She projects an image of a young woman with a supremely fit but natural body. She doesn't have a silicone boob job nor does she starve herself. She has powerful muscles that are clearly fit for purpose yet she remains feminine, and men clearly find her attractive. That's what I think she means when she talks about having a good body image. She's a preferable role model to Kate Moss.
-
Nothing wrong with her comments. What a mountain out of a molehill.
-
Nothing wrong with her comments. What a mountain out of a molehill.
Of course there is nothing wrong with her comments (about equating 'sexy' with riding a bike). The problem, as I see it, is the narrowness of mind of the media in focussing only on what 'the media' consider sexually newsworthy. Had VP looked like Felicia Ballanger (do your own research - safe to say she was no glamour girl) she (VP) would not have attracted a column inch in the UK. VP has a very long way to go before she equals the palmares of Ballanger, yet to read the papers, even some of the cyclng press, one would assume that VP is the only successful female British cyclist. By rights, Nicole Cooke, by far the most successful modern female cyclist, should attract the most attention, (again research) but she does not. Why not? Because she is not conventionally 'pretty' (though she melts my heart). Despite one 'glam' shoot she prefers to be judged by results alone, by her peers.
If VP wants to capitalise on her 15 minutes of fame good luck to her, it certainly doesn't harm the perception of cycling in the media, just lets not forget the other female cyclists who achieved greatness without playing the 'glam' card.
Anyone remember Beryl Burton? (Who, to me, was gorgeous). With her achievments (look 'em up, but give yourself a while) she would..... well decide for yourself.
We live in the 'short attention span' - 'sound/video byte' age. I chatted with, (about fruit of all things) indeed bought tea and buns, for Beryl Burton in a cafe in Yorkshire. I wonder, in years to come, how many will be able to say the same of VP?
-

Bear in mind that the preception of cycling is changing. Has any other cycling event been given prime time coverage on the BBC other than the worlds? I suspect that this has helped enourmously with her publicity.
For pretty I offer Lizzy Armitstead (left if you aren't familiar with GB kit):
I'm glad to see that someone else thinks that!

IME, the sex/sporting prowess thing in males is just a myth
Maybe she should do a 'George Best' and find a male competitor who feels the same and do it in the changing rooms between heats?

Alan, you are an absolute treasure and you deserve many of these :-* :-* :-*
I have been feeling a little out of sorts this week and have been dashing here there and everywhere. I needed that boost, thank you.
I shall remember this when I am feeling a bit below par or doubting my abilities or my looks.

It's not just about looks though. From what I've seen and heard of Nicole Cooke, she isn't as articulate as VP and doesn't have very much personality. Or rather, she doesn't have the kind of personality that makes you instantly warm to her regardless of her racing achievements.
Despite one 'glam' shoot she prefers to be judged by results alone, by her peers.
The only reason that VP started getting media attention was because of her results.
Their choice of cycling discipline also has a bearing on the amount of media attention they receive. VP wins gold medals in competitions like the World Cup, World Championships and Olympics - easily understood events to the non-cycling public. NC wins fairly obscure road races [mostly] abroad. The mainstream media don't even report mens road races (apart from the TDF) so she hasn't got a hope in hell.

Listen to her Inside Sport (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_and_radio/inside_sport/7337077.stm) interview with Matthew Pinsent for a better impression of what she's like.

You obviously haven't met her. I have (ner ner ;D) She has an evident intellect, though you are right that it doesn't transfer to TV.

Commonwealth Games? Matters only to UK press I know, but isn't that what we are talking about?
Anyway, I'm in love,

It made me go weak at the knees. I love this look for women and she does it so chuffing well :o
As for the article, if I have to play 2nd fiddle to something in order for Miss P to be intimate with me then I have only one thing to say- 'Maestro, pass me my bow!'

It's obviously en fettle, innit?

Did anyone notice that the chain's a bit slack in the "mechanic" shot?
Track riders aren't nearly so obsessed with having bar-tight chains as fixed road riders. There is more drag with tighter chains and that shot isn't loose enough to throw the chain anyway.

Last night. BBC1, "The One Show", brief appearance of La Pendleton.
I was astonished that Mr Chiles didn't ask Ms Pendleton if she falls off her bike a great deal and then, even more astonishingly, he went on to say he could, "...talk about cycling for hours." I wonder if he'd ask Mr Killeen if he falls off his bike a lot?
OT. Wouldn't it be nice to hear from some of the silver and bronze medallists in the cycling team?

That kind of behaviour can be dubious. My friend Mr Sunshine plays in a band. Amog the Luckyband's friends on FaceSpace, or Mybo, or something, may be counted Jarvis Cocker.
This is cool.
But they have also attracted the attention of The Anti-Christ, a.k.a. Russell Brand.
This is the opposite.
-
... The Anti-Christ, a.k.a. Russell Brand.
Russel Brand wound me up hopelessly -- by virtue, I suspect, of his association with Big Brother as much as anything I'd every observed about him -- until I saw his performance in the Secret Policeman's Ball. That has some spectacular moments.

Brand's jolly funny on the radio.

Part of me wants to give her a hug... and part of me thinks, if crushing insecurity is what gets you to perform at world class, then go for it.

She's bloody ace, isn't she?
"And what other sport has to deal with the attitude we get as cyclists on the road? I certainly haven't noticed any sudden courtesy to cyclists in the wake of us being the most successful British team in the Olympics. I cycle to the velodrome most days and I have one narrow escape for every hour on the road. I just think, 'Holy shit, I could die on my bike out here.'
"To a cyclist, these bloody motorists might as well be running around with a loaded gun. When you have that sort of attitude towards cyclists how are we going to move our sport into the mainstream?"

Eloquent, intelligent, attractive, and pulls out the performances when it matters.
Definitely needs more mainstream media attention.

part of me thinks, if crushing insecurity is what gets you to perform at world class, then go for it.
I think the GB cycling team employ a psychologist to help the athletes cope with the mental stresses of competing at that level. I think it's a bloody excellent idea, and wonder if any of our other athletes in other disciplines get this kind of support? Perhaps it's part of the reason GB cycling is so dominant right now...

All of me wants to give her more than a hug!
I can't help but feel (especially after some other recent interviews) that she's trying really hard not to come across as arrogant (which is fair enough). I doubt she's as insecure as the article implies....
-
Without wanting to get into the 'phwooarr' end of things, I'd have to say that's a great picture - VP as a woman, rather than a dolly-bird.

The psychologist was interviewed on BBC at the world champs & he said he does help some of the other sports but I can't remember which for sure - possibly the rowers...

He is Steve Peters - also works with some other sports. Used to work in secure hospitals I think. He has made a huge difference to some riders. Confidence and self-belief is as important as fitness, and BC work on the basis of "no stone left unturned".

I do like the fact that she actually cycles to the Velodrome, and it's not a case of driving there, and only cycling when she absolutely has to.

From today's Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/dec/11/victoria-pendleton-small-talk)
Ah come on now. You should look at it as being streamlined not flat-chested? Yeah, aerodynamic. That's how I want to look at it.
Do you ever cycle through red lights? You know, when the pedestrian lights are green? No, I never do that. I'm quite tempted to do it, but I don't, simply because I feel there are enough cyclists who give us a bad name [a reckless Small Talk weaving through north London on his high nelly being one] and as a consequence I don't want to give anybody a reason to have a go, so I tend to stick exactly by the rules.
What's the last book you read? Russell Brand's 'My Booky Wook'.

Superb 3 race match - then girlie tears.
Wonderfull.
-
Watched it - brilliant - can't beleive that it can all come down to about 2mm - I think I'd have cried too :'(
-
What makes it even more remarkable is that she appears to have the wrong body type for the event.
As she collected her Gold I couldn't help notice that her rivals looked more like over-developed, former-Soviet, power-lifters than cyclists.
Technique triumphed over brute force I suspect.
-
Don't knock brute force! But yes, the commentators were saying exactly that, that she was pretty delicate for a sprinter. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't -- wasn't that Belgian (?) lad a similar build?

On my way home from work through the Peaks one evening last week, I was passed at speed by a very fit and shapely female cyclist in skin tight official looking lycra on an uber-bling road bike with racing shades and helmet that looked very, very much like our Vicky....
Inspired, I did catch her up down the road but was much too out of breath to engage in any conversation (sigh). She then turned left and accelerated up towards Stannage and I turned right and wobbled limply the rest of the way home so that was that....
Pretty nice encounter - though not entirely sure if it really was VP! ;)

Just over half-way through the South Then North 600, if that's any use, though this was nearly two years ago.

She looks mighty fine in FHM. She even gets a whole page to herself. I'm not sure why she's wearing a hooded top over her underwear and made up to look like she's just smoked a massive joint, but fine she does look.
Also, in the main bit of the mag there is:
"NEXT MONTH IN FHM
GOLD STANDARD
Exclusive! Olympic cyclist Victoria Pendleton finally loses the lycra...."
I guess she'll be on the cover then :) And they'll be lots of not so subtle piccies :P
-
Checkout the Cycling Weekly (http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/61377/Main/61326) forum view.
First poster says :"I will get it for the '26 signs that you're getting old' article"
I rather think the first sign is asking, "where are the bikes?"!

I think some of those things infringe the 3:1 aspect ratio UCI ruling...

That's the one I meant - for some reason my subscription copy of CAR hit the doormat about ten days earlier than normal, so although the house ad says "FHM - on sale now", the issue in the shops at the time wasn't it.

I remember seeing an article on Vicky P in Cycling Weekly in 2007 or early 2008, and thinking she was a right munter.
It isn't really VP on the cover. The amount of shit they do to you "post production" on these images is crazy. I remember watching Dawn Porter going through the process on TV. They took one of her eyes, copied, pasted and flipped it to cover the over the other, because they looked slightly different FFS.....

I cannot understand the problem really. Vicki is a free agent past the age of consent. She has a need to earn a living. She chose to have the pictures taken. They show less than the original Calendar Girls showed. Certainly no "fluffy bits" (as the CGs stipulated).

She's quite spotty, right? Haven't all the zits and cellulite been airbrushed out? :-X ;)
-
I can assure you Maander that she most certainly looks batter naked than you do.
-
Have you seen maander naked?
-
Have you seen maander naked?
Yes
Please stop sending me those pictures by the way or I will call the police.
-
Hoe does she cycle so fast without any muscles?
-
I have read all this thread & after carefull consideration have concluded that...
she can have a tater off my dinner any time she likes ;D
-
Hoe does she cycle so fast without any muscles?
She has muscles, she's just not ripped like some athletes. I've seen her deadlift.
She also has no fear. And a hellacious turn of speed that maybe her heavier-legged competitors can't quite match.
Parked up for yesterday's tri, there was a Sky van over the road. I knew it was going to be a good day from there on in.

I bet they photoshopped it to tone her down a bit as well, a magazine aimed at young men can't have the cover model looking stronger than most of it's readership now can it? that would undermine their already marginal grasp on masculinity...

Victoria and Elle Macpherson on a tandem:
(http://twitpic.com/show/large/7mf3j.jpg) (http://twitpic.com/7mf3j)
-
Chain looks a bit slack.
-
No man will overtake that tandem, the might get up on the side of it, but then decide
that it's better to stay behind it. :D
-
Ugly tandem.
-
Ugly tandem.
What tandem? Oh - now I see it.
-
There's a tandem?
-
Bah, beaten to it.
-
Is that a Post Office Tower, or are you just pleased to see me?
-
Do you think if I asked her nicely she would stoke mine?
-
I'm sure she'd be delighted
-
Is it just my dusty monitor, or is Elle sporting a bit of camel toe? :P

Sorry Vicky, you're old news now: did anyone see Chris Hoy's wife Sarra at Ascot? What a fantastic dress. Negligible flesh on show but still stunning :)
-
I missed both Chris and Mrs Hoy. I was at Ascot all last week but was working. Still got lots of sightings of pleasant youg (and not so young) ladies and more than enough sightings and dealings with folk far to deep into their cups >:(
Any pics of Mrs Hoy?

I guess I could watch the Ascot coverage on iPlayer and do a screengrab, but that seems like a slippery slope, and my lunch hour has its limits ...
Anyway, just to keep you going, this is an inferior dress:

Ms Pendleton was on tonight's recording of QofS, so look out for her in the new series - Should be show 3.

Max Pendleton acquitted himself well at the roller racing at Mildenhall.
Lacks a certain...je ne sais quoi, mind ;)

Me too. I've had a bit of a stalker several times during this thread. :demon: :smug:
Oh. That's not what you meant, is it? :-[ :-[

looking lovely on Question of Sport, now!
-
I see that La Pendleton has been shortlisted for The Sunday Times Sportswoman of The Year Award.
Voting here (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/related_reports/sportswomen_of_the_year/article6858437.ece)
Although I might vote for Claire Taylor

I don't need VP any more.

Those thighs look like they could . . . do things to a person.
Erm, who is she?

That would be Liz Hatch (http://www.cyclingwebsite.net/coureurfichebeeldbank.php?coureurid=39613) then.
Hmm, not quite Vicky, but not uninteresting. :demon: ;D

I might be a bit premature with this one, but keep an eye out for Jess Booth. She's only 17 or 18, but could easily outshine VP on the glamour front. Her mum is nice too! ;)
She's the one on the right below:-

Sadly, I fear she's not going to get her own TV cookery show based on that selection of dishes.

Cheese and banana are nice. So too cheese and honey sandwiches.
-
Honey is one of those foods I feel I ought to like and don't really.
-
So what does the elite cyclist eat for breakfast? Pendleton toast or Hoy All-Bran?* I'm confused.
*as All-Bran is basically wood shavings and sawdust, I'd go for the toast.
-
Other than the Hummus and Carrot, all sound as delicious as the lady herself.
-
No marmite in her haute cuisine I notice.

Hoy's is bran flakes innit. Too much salt and sugar. Is toast better though?

Pendleton on toast? I like my toast with lots of butter. Can I have Pendleton on toast with lots of butter?

Honey ...
You ought to be ashamed of yourself. This in a thread about La Pendleton. There will at this very moment be very distracted men (and women) in a fond reverie...

YES - and we use a toast rack.

Surely you can't see her toast in that one? ???
-

The answer to both of those comments is:
Where were you brought up?!? ;)
But yes, she does look luvverly. Looks like someone's finally found a look that suits her. VP has looked just silly in most other "glamourous" shots
(and I don't think her skinsuit is all that great a look).
Well done Hovis!

Mary Hen does, much to my chagrin

Indeed.

Much more classy than the Times and FHM photoshoots, which both fell prey to the "trying too hard" syndrome.

Toast?

Yeah, I'm going to get in trouble for that.
I blame everyone else for not coming up with it first.

Strange lighting.
-
She's one heck of an ambassador for the sport, isn't she?
-
Why does she need a heart rate monitor on each forearm?
-
Must be a Time Lord.
-
Why does she need a heart rate monitor on each forearm?
'cause the whole piece is linked to a promotion of some fitness programme using that product.
Very good comment from someone asking why she was asked about "naughty" cyclists. Would they have asked a racing driver about speeding motorists?
-
*little moment*
-
Might just be me but doesn't she look a little like Emilio there?
-
That was a good excuse to go back & look again.
Yes, I think she does.

She's not sitting on the saddle in that pic… ;)

ah - is that a power start - at the instant of the gun, she'll hurl herself forwards taking advantage of levering off the person holding the saddle?

That pic is perfect for Photoshoppers.

Jolly good, I picked up my copy off the doorstep at 5.40am and have been out ever since. Hopefully Mrs GB has left me some of the concise crossword to do...

She hates cycling :o
She's just unfortunately very good at it!
-
This is probably the most inappropriate thread to comment on this, but I've been listening to VP on five live just now, and I thought she was excellent, informative, and seemed very relaxed and even happy. Good for her. Hope we get to hear more.
-
Vicky P loves cycling. It is racing she hates (though she likes the training).
