I think with some of these cakes, it's not even so much about how perfect or not they are, but the clear love and time that has gone into them and the personalisation, character and humour they can bring.

My mum used to do a good line in fun cakes, her execution was often pretty bad, but at the time I didn't notice cos it was the thought that counted and meant so much.

Not my skillset, but I have watched videos from sensible YouTubers (how to cook that for example) that tries to help people learn how to make GOOD cakes and which tools or specialist ingredients are really worth it and indeed how they go wrong +/- being fixable. It does take real skill and a lot of time.
