Moments of pride

There are those moments, those times when your kids do something that brings a tear of pride to your eye.

I had a phone call from a stranger to tell me the river was rising fast and my narrowboat (mooring the centre of york) was heeling over (ropes too tight).

MrsCharly in lectures, nobody else I know around. So I phoned my 19-yr-old. He went down to the river - which was flooding 6-8" deep over the wharf. He waded through the current, climbed on board the boat. One rope too tight to undo, so he had the presence of mind to go ashore and borrow a stanley knife from some builders and cut the rope. Then he sorted the other ropes, made boat safe again.

It maybe doesn't sound much, but the river in this state is really dangerous - very fast currents, very deep and you can't see where the edge of the wharf is under the murky water.

Most adults, unless they have boating experience, wouldn't know what to do or want to tackle it.

I'm really proud of him.

I got one bit wrong. It wasn't 6-8" deep.

It was waist deep when he got there.
