October WARTY - a Suffolk Special - 24/10/09
« on: 31 August, 2009, 09:38:25 pm »
After our triumph on Saturday not doing the Mildenhall 100 audax, the Trenchant Trio avowed that we would return to the Queen's Head in Hawkedon for lunch. So,

bikehike.co.uk - Course Creator

will be our WARTY for October.

Meet at Stowmarket station for a 10 a.m. departure.

11ses in Lavenham.

Lunch at the Queen's Head, Hawkedon.

Afternoon pub stop at the Five Bells, Rattlesden.

48 miles or so. Warning: hills! The route climbs close to Suffolk's highest point (420') near Rede and the 5 miles or so either side of lunch will be hard work.

According to National Rail there are no engineering works on 24th October and tickets are currently available at £8 each way.

This will also be the last day of Summer Time until the end of March 2010. Make the most of the last light evening of the year.

Having missed this months, due to not being at Mildenhall, I'll have to do this one, in an attempt to keep my ranking somewhere near(ish) the top. ;D

Oddly enough, it's exactly the same price for tickets from London, and more than twice the price if I don't want to book my tickets ahead of time, and have to use specific trains. :-\
Actually, it is rocket science.

Yes. With the Anfractuous 200 covering RRTY duties earlier in the month, I shall be available for this one I think .

That's the standard cheapest advnace ticket in E. Anglia. You can get all the way to Sheringham for that price if you want (recommended).

Mrs. S. joining us?

I doubt it - that's probably too far, but I'll open negotiations. Just in case - remind me - National Excess East Angular take tandems, yes?

As this is on my doorstep and these are my regular lanes, can I put my name down?

No problem at all on the Norwich Express. Ginormous guard's van. We also carry ours around in one piece on the other trains even though we are probably not supposed to.

Pencil me and Mrs T in please, attendance will be weather dependant  ;) Arriving by c*r I am afraid.

PS..Do I get a point for the August Warty, even though I did actually finish the "proper" ride ?  ( looked for the unmistakeable wowbagger figure on the camp site at Mildenhall, but no contact was made so I set of on my own.  ;D)

Humm, a ride to Lavenham for elevenses sounds like the start of a DIY 200k from home...

I have found audaxes to be incompatible with social rides:

"Hello everyone! - Ohh look, cake - CHOMP! - ah well, must be going - bye!"

Better to ride an audax in a 'social' fashion, I'd say.

I can ride to Lavenham in 2h or so, which would give me 1h45 in hand on arrival.  More than enough time for a bit of chat.  If I choose the next control carefully I can then ride in the same direction for a while.

Or I could just ride out for the social ride.  I've given up on points chasing for this season.  :'(

That's pretty much what I did in Chatteris.  Petrol station for food, wolf down a Ginsters thingy (c) Greenbank, back on bike, go.

Much quicker than falling asleep in an apple pie at the Green Welly.

I will be in Suffolk on the 24th, but on the wrong side of the county.
