November WARTY - Braxted & Back - 21/11/09
« on: 17 October, 2009, 07:02:51 pm »
Greetings all WARTIers!

The penultimate WARTY will be from Wickford station to the Green Man, Little Braxted, (it looks more like Wickham Bishops on the map but is always referred to as Little Braxted) and back, using famed Essex lanes including the tail-end of North Hill, the excellent Tea Rooms at Paper Mill Lock (11ses) and via Nutty's Slimed Bottom. The return will be via a short off-road diversion (to be avoided if wet) to cross the Chelmer at Langford, Flambirds Farm, Edwins Hall Road, affording fine views of the River Crouch and back to Wickford with a stirring descent of Brock Hill.

Lights will be required as 45 miles in late November will certainly involve arriving back at Wickford after dark.

Meet Wickford at 10 a.m. Frequent trains from Lpoo St (approx 40 mins).

Emily and I could be interested...

Edit: just given in to curiosity and read about the slimed bottom.  Sounds rather like the place where I lost the front wheel of the tandem last time I was riding a WARTY.  Time for another attempt, I think!
Half term's when the traffic becomes mysteriously less bad for a week.

Well, I guess I'm up for this, in an attempt to keep my WARTY rankness somewhere near the top. ;D

It doesn't look like there's any point getting advanced tickets, since there are no discounts for this.  I guess it'll be a case of getting as many of us Londonites at the station at the same time to make use of groupsave goodness.

Is this going to be a 10am start?  If so, then the 9-15 from Liverpool Street will get us there for 9-51, which would seem OK.
Actually, it is rocket science.

I doubt if you can get an advance ticket for Wickford, Tim. It's only £13.80 for a full price day return anyway.

I'm always on the look out for a bargain, but an advance ticket isn't an option on this line/date.  As you say, it's not too expensive in this direction anyhow.  If there are enough of us, a groupsave will half the price as well.

I hope to do this ride.

I'll probably get a train down to Bishop Stortford and ride down from there, as I did earlier in the year. I must try and stay off the A12 this time tho'  ::-)

I hope to be able to ride, tho' I may cut off back home to Dunmow at some point ,rather than head all the way back to Wickford.

I feel this needs a bounce. Weather, just a smattering of showers in the afternoon but it'll be a day on the bike so it's perfect.  ;D

Anyone else coming from London?  If I was correct earlier in the thread, it'll be a 9-15 train from Liverpool Street.

PippaG and myself are a possibility.......

... watch this space.

Does anyone have a Bikely plot of the route as we may be looking for an early exit, on account of a previous engagement?

I don't have a route but if you make it as far as 11ses then your quickest exit would be to make for Chelmsford, Witham, or Hatfield Peveral station.

The Green Man pub is scarcely 2 miles from Witham station and what's more, it's all down hill!

Weather is looking bad now, high speed winds and rain, Clicky. Could be the wettest and windiest WARTY!

Well, metoffice isn't so pessimistic. I'm hoping to trial this on Thursday, for which yesterday's forecast was dreadful but is now better. Hopefully things will improve, but I'm disinclined to set off if the forecast is for howling winds and pissing down.

By the way, Del, if the weather is OK on Thurs, I'll cycle to Wickford too. In fact, we could miss Wickford out and make straight for E. Hanningfield.

Let me know what time you'd want to start for EH then as I was going to head for the 40+ outing, Crondon and the Viper, and 1000 at Wickford would have made for a good time for either ride.

Leave about 1000 and then straight to the Viper. Unless you want to ride with the 40+ and go to Crondon Park for 11ses?

I'd planned 11ses at Paper Mill Lock.
