How hard is it to cycle to Manchester from York via any kind of nice route?

In a word, LUMPY!!!! :)

Oh and I think 14/15 May might be free for me....

Yeah, I was afraid of that.

The lumpy bit, I mean, not you being free.

Any ideas for the 14/15th weekend then?  Night rides or other I guess.

Or Whitby, as mentioned the other night, I have unfinished business with the Whitby ride :)

Are actually we allowed to go to Whitby if it isn't Halloween?

hmmmmm, nothing in this about you can only go to Whitby on Goth Weekend, although it does add entertainment at the end of the ride :)

I'd definitely be up for that (nips off to see when the NYMR are having their diesel galas :) )

Whitby sounds good again.

I may be up for this, but I'm having a go at my first 200 on the 14th (Why I've decided the best thing to do on my birthday is ride 130 miles is beyond me  ::-))

Sat 14th May, seems to be the same steam time table as in October.  So would people be up for riding back from Pickering again?

Could be done - if my back decides to play up I can bail out at Malton and get the train home :)

I think I've sorta-kinda committed myself to this by putting the BFO 23T sprocket onto the work bike. Unfortunately(?) the Bat Bike isn't set up for night-riding and I don't have a disc-compatible dynamo hub.

Turns out that the NYMR doesn't have a diesel gala until September, so I guess I'll have to take pictures of kettles on wheels instead  ;)

Blue Bank on the streetmachine.....

I think that might be another one of those moments when one would have to say "I think we'd better let Kim go first here...."

Ah, so it's the 'interesting' route to Whitby rather than the 'really interesting'1 route to Whitby :)

1 - containing the only two hills I've ever had to walk down.

We took a very benign route.  FTR the route through Rosedale and Egton probably isn't even a mile longer ;)

Stop that thought RIGHT there, young man!

By the way, for those of you not enamoured of steamy stuff, the trains from Scarborough to York are likely to be running on 15th May, and it's a quick 10-ish miles from Whitby to Scarborough, then a direct train back to York.

Though it became a feature of last year's ride, the steam railway to Pickering was borne out of necessity, as the Scarborough-York trains weren't running that day.

Stop that thought RIGHT there, young man!

If tigerbiten and tom_e can do near-as-dammit 50 mph down Blue Bank, imagine what you'd all be capable of down Rosedale Chimney.

The road from Pickering to Rosedale Abbey isn't too bad, as Moors roads go.
You do avoid the Chimney, but it doesn't spare you from an absolute bastard of a climb out and Delves Bank isn't really something I'd fancy at night even if I do know the road.

Whatever. The date is in my diary.

Depends on whether 'staying on the tarmac' is a prerequisite ...

Yeah, I was afraid of that.

The lumpy bit, I mean, not you being free.

Any ideas for the 14/15th weekend then?  Night rides or other I guess.

It's a nice ride, I like it a lot.  You're basically flat as far as Wakefield, then lumpy as far as Holmfirth, then you've got Holme Moss to climb.  If you don't know it, HM is more of a continental climb than a British climb - it has no evilly steep bits but it carries on for a while and is spectacular on top.  Descend the other side (v fast, so you'll be glad it'll be getting light by then) to Crowden and take a route to Manchester that's only slightly lumpy and generally downhill.

If you want to miss out Holme Moss, your best bet is to take a right in Holmfirth and head up the slightly easier climb over Saddleworth Moor, which will then descend to Stalybridge and take a relatively flat route through Manchester to the centre.

Sadly, i shan't join  you for such a venture.  May 14th is the date of my 600km PBP qualifier.

Flattest way from York to Manc would surely be via Calderdale, over Summit and down through Littleborough & Rochdale.
Getting there...

Btw, Kim - feel free to make use of the CrinklyHotel facilities if it helps with travel arrangements.  Although I might make my youngest kip in my room to avaid him trying to wake you up with exciting construction toys at dark o'clock!

I officially have a pass out for this, better order the train tickets to make it doubly so!

Just to be clear, date will be Friday 13th May.

I've just realised that the 13th is next week.  Who's in?  Scarborough or Whitby?  I feel the need for a plan!

I'm out.  Took one look at the price of train tickets (of which I have just purchased an alarming number) and signed up for the FNRttC to Brighton instead.
