I've just signed up for this, if only to look at the palm trees on the seafront :). Anyone else going?

I notice form Simon's email that he has adopted a Coleridge-based theme for the Southend ride. I have volunteered to be his greybeard loon.
With his approval, I'll ride out to Stock (which is a mere 3 miles, if that, from my birthplace and possibly less from my parents' abode for 43 years) and enjoy the 4ses stop and the best bits of the ride back in to Southend , followed by a hearty breakfast.

70 people according to Simon's latest missive  :o Amazing for a December ride, although I'm wondering how many will make it if it turns out to be a bit moist and/or chilly.

Let me get on with fitting my mudguards and rack.  ;D

I really have to do one of these, well the one to Southend anyway.
I can not see that happening this time around though. Hope the weather is kind to you.

I'm far too much of a wusser to do an overnight ride in December.

I have a solution! Get a train to SoS, have breakfast with the overnighters, and ride home in the daylight.

I have train tickets, a shiny new Salbutamol inhaler, studded tyres and permission to bring the baraktacycle on this one.

Think I'll go with the three-wheel option for novelty value (a bonus 50% extra mudguards!), low risk of icy death and to see how practical it is on trains while not having to worry about wrangling another bike or significant luggage.

Does your ticket specify a Southend station for your return? Or have you not yet bought that bit?

"SOUTHEND STNS *"

It's the usual VWC and connections ticket, so anything goes on that leg.

Haven't done one of these for a while now. Not this time though. 70 riders on a December night ride is very good. Well done Mr Legg Bandage.

I'm planning to come to Southend to say hi to everyone - and to the Baraktacycle. Maybe I will bring Alfie as well as Poppy!

If you get on at Prittlewell and leave at Lpoo St, there will be no-one around to challenge you. Come for a cuppa with us!

After all, if the Baraktacycle is coming then Alfie ought to be introduced. I think I shall leave Poppy behind though as she can't go on Alfie.

Absolutely.  Hopefully the baraktacycle won't get jealous of all the shiny hub pr0n.

Just seen the email from His Leggship - he seems to reckon that it'll be a little on the cold side, for some reason...

I'll be there hopefully.

As long as the ford stays 4" deep I'll be ok, any deeper and it could be fun ..........  ;D

Will be good to see you there :). Maybe you could start a 4 Trices of the Apocalypse. I suspect even with 4" you'd get some interesting splashback, so it might be wise to bring some cover  ;D

8 mph seems to be the critical speed.
Faster than this and the spay from the front wheels starts to hit you.

For some strange reason I aways forget this when bombing up the BVW and hit the ford on it at ~12-15 mph and end up soaked ..........  :P
