Lôn Las Cymru, and the back up the coast.
« on: 05 April, 2016, 11:40:15 am »
Would be getting a ferry from Dublin to Holyhead and doing the LLC to Cardiff.
Possibly cycling from Cardiff along south coast and cycling back up West coast to Holyhead to the ferry but.............
....
I hear the Welsh coast is very (extremely) hilly. Is this the case?
I'd be fully "light" loaded. Wild/ campsite camping.

Have done 3 x 200 audaxes this year.

Someone with more direct experience hopefully will come along, but as far as where I have ridden or been the coast was not worst than Lôn Las Cymru. Easier in places as although you might get sharp up and down sections these are never too long vs long climbs with various degrees of steepness. Brilliant plan though!
What? Turn left that way?

Coastal routes can often be lumpy due to 'up over the headland, down to the town in the next bay, up over the headland, repeat, repeat, repeat.
This tends to be true of all coastlines in the UK and Ireland.  If you are main road friendly, you can mitigate this to a certain extent by staying a little further from sea.
However, this is Wales.  It's going to be lumpy whichever route you take, so probably not a lot in it.

Sounds a great plan.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

As Basil says, it will be lumpier the closer you want to go to the sea.  I don't know South Wales too well, but Aberaeron to Aberystwyth is moderately hilly, but not particularly brutal.  The coast route is also the main road, but main roads in Wales aren't necessarily that busy.  Aberystwyth to Machynllyth is rolling on the main road; the more coastal route involves turning left at the top of Aberystwyth and is hillier to start with, but rolling rather than hilly.

From Machynllyth, the main road is hillier than the coastal route. Mach to Aberdyfi is rolling along the estuary, but then flatter toward Barmouth, across the bridge to Barmouth and then easy rolling up to Harlech and Porthmadog.  If you take the Llŷn peninsular, the southern section is quite flat, whilst the northern coast is repeated sharp up and downs.  It's hard if you have a lot of miles in the legs, but otherwise very do-able. The alternative is the Lon Las Cymru to cut off the Llŷn.  Caernarfon to Bangor is Lon Las Cymru and is pretty flat (except the short section to the bridge).  Anglesey coast is rolling, nothing massively challenging up the western side to Holyhead.
