OK, here it is in all it's glory. Considering the forecast I've left all the COR off the route although we take in a couple of lanes which might prove to be interesting. About as much climbing as I can fit if for a route around Tiptree as well

VIEW THE ROUTE

As far as pub choices go the route take us past the lot of them:

I am advised that the Bonnie Blue Oak is actually pretty friendly these days, the route takes us by there so might as well try it out I guess. They have Maldon Gold and Wibblers IPA on this week. (note the pub changed its name quite recently after a local girl of travelling origins was killed in a car accident. I believe her family own the pub)

The Anchor would actually be my 'local' often full of builders. I figure as it is a Champions League night it might be rather full

The Old Times - Probably going to be the quietest of the lot

The Ship - Again I suspect it will be rammed with football watching types.

I'll be over at Spa Road for 19:30, see you all there.

Potential that I shall be out to see you in Tiptree.... I've plotted a route just in case, it follows the circuit of pubs in yours Nik, so the Oak, Anchor, Cavery pub and Swan... I'll keep an eye out for bikes on my way round :)

My plan is to be at Spa Road at the appointed hour, however if I'm not there on time, don't wait - I'll take a short-cut and try to meet you on the route somewhere.

I hope that for tonight at the very least the rain is slightly more Vertical than it was at 6am on the platform at Witham station! Crikey!

I will try to intercept the fast moving blur of luminosity that is the Witham peloton somewhere around Little Totham.

It looks like a fairly short route out to the pub by normal standards.  Nothing to do with the fact that we are on Tippers' home turf I am sure  ::-)

I am expecting to be out tonight, meeting the Witham mob at Spa Rd roundabout.

Looking at the forecast I decided a shorter route would be the better option, I have an extended version ready if the weather is good though so we can make the call tonight.

Although, if we are going to visit 4 pubs I am not sure we can go too far  ;D

I have a couple of suggestions for this Wednesday. Either the Woolie in Witham cos you lot keep going there without me. Or The Prince of Wales in Great Totham, I've been past a few times and it looks fine from the outside - anyone been in?  Or The Swan at Little Totham?

Wherever we decide I'm happy to produce a route as I've not contributed one for a while.

Yes, why not?  I don't think we've ever been there, pretty sure I haven't.

I visited last year on a blazing hot summer day on the way home form the Heybridge Regatta with the family.  I can't really comment on the interior though as we stayed in the garden.  Can't comment on the ales either since it was so hot I resorted to the cider (Aspalls, IIRC).

The blue bits on the pub sign here are actually the sky behind - it has a transparent border round the fleur-de-lys.

I cycle past the Bell when I commute by bike.  Looks ok but I haven't been in.  The Swan is not far if it turns out to be a Teenage_kiwi type of place.

The Crab and Winkle railway line was removed decades ago just in case you were hoping to use that.

I think once I've got my sticky mits on some of your banana leaf wrapped guava stuff I'll never need to take the train again!

I thought tippers was the pusher for that particular Colombian delicacy.

Good stuff it is too!

I've been to The Bell a few times when out riding with the girls. Similar it atmosphere to the Swan (as it used to be).

I am not expecting to make it this Wednesday but it is already more promising than it was.

It would be quite straightforward to devise a route which went past all the pubs mentioned so far.  I'm not suggesting we turn tomorrow night into a pub crawl but we could decide on the fly which pub we wanted to stop at.

So shall I take an executive decision, decide on a pub and devise a route accordingly?

Right then, I offer THIS ROUTE for the Witham peloton with the target pub being The Bell.  Is that OK folks?

EDIT: the route goes past most of the other pubs mentioned plus others.  If The Bell is pants we can move onto The Swan.

Ah, a classic OD route.  You are less than a km from the pub at 17km but it takes another 26km to reach it.

There are a few busy roads in there particularly the main road from Maldon.

There are also some which I fancy won't be very busy at all  :demon:
