Velorution's cheapest hub is £599, where's the fun in sticking to the budget? Everyone here is N+1, so we should actually be the last people to ask for bike advice. You don't ask addicts what's a good starter drug.

Velorution's cheapest hub is £599

Also has full chain case, mudguards, rack, kickstand and integrated lighting powered by a hub dynamo - which is well over £100 worth of extras you'd have to spend on an off-the-shelf hybrid from Halfords.

No one's going to buy that bike though - far too sensible.

That seems a bit harsh. The sales assistant said hub gears are not popular (with an implied in the U.K.) and that might cause issues with maintenance.

I would agree. Hub gears are relatively rare in the U.K. these days. Bike shops might not have parts in stock nor the knowledge to deal with them.

Which "sales assistant" actually said this? I've checked back over the thread and the OP seems to be quoting their own assumptions rather than any advice they've been given.

Am I missing something?
I was replying to the last line of the post immediately above mine. I think the potentially imaginary sales assistent was correct.

Of course. I think it was QG who first made reference to a sales assistant, but your reply to her made me think I must have missed something.

Not even remotely important, just slightly confusing.

Hi guys, thanks for the link and yes this hub gear bike does pretty good to be honest

https://velorution.com/gazelle-citygo-c7-mens-bike.html

As i am a beginner coming back to cycling after many years i am looking for something slightly cheaper, maybe £350-500 as my first bike, rather than a £700 hub bike.

Thanks again for all your help and opinions and i will keep this in mind when buying my aluminium hybrid bike from my LBS or online.

Cheers
