I’ve just tried to buy a couple of,open return rail tickets to attend a funeral, but the computer say no! LNER are trying to spin the change as an improvement because I don’t need to plan my return journey when I book my outward journey. Err, I didn’t need to plan my return journey with an open return, so that’s bollox.

I’m going to go a sit in a corner and sulk about this for a bit.

It’s a price hike, disguised as ‘progress’ and hidden from view.
It ensures even packing of ‘services’.

Last minute ‘walk-on’ fares are usually pricey.

Stuffs happen, meaning you’d like the flexibility of being able to jump on any suitable return train, which you can’t do now.

This might be useful depending on where you are trying to go to - there seems to be a workaround for Edinburgh (look for IMPORTANT UPDATE: LNER FARE CHANGES FROM FEBRUARY 2024)

People who tag people in emails, like this "thanks @fred.smith@domain.com for your comment", as if they're they're the cool kids on that Instagram they have these days are this: Rather Annoying Too.

That username convention in the fediverse irks me, for similar reasons.  What's wrong with username@domain.tld?  If you want to make it clear that it's not an email address, that's what URI schemes are for.  If you want your application software to turn them into clickable wotsits, that what regular expressions are for.

It's almost like nobody remember how the internet is supposed to work.

I think I may have commented in the past about my father's propensity for leaving DIY jobs half finished.

See what I found lurking behind a TPOC & propped up panel in the kitchen.  It must have been like this for over 25 years....

He may have moved the socket when he put new kitchen units in.  Wires on the right are dead so the old socket could be further down.

Could also be 'wires on the right are dead' in the split ring main sense?  Here be dragons...

Also, the lx tape on the appliance cord on the left looks suspicious...

I think that may have been a patch up job after the rat visitation several years ago.   Something else to check when I can find the circular tuits.

Today's list of Rather Annoying People:

1.  People who merge cells in Excel
2.  People who use Excel because the document they want is in landscape not portrait.
3.  People in general

Insurance renewal for buildings and contents arrived today - up from £313 to £407

Phone the company:

"How may I help you today?"

Me "I have my renewal notice and want to pay less please"

"One moment please . .  <5 seconds>  ... I can adjust the premium to £346"

Me "Is that for exactly the same cover?"

"Yes it is"

Me "OK, thanks I'll go with that, please renew"

[Having had a look at a comparison site the only prices from companies I would deal with, for the same cover, were £336 and £363 - and these were two brands from the same insurer]

What is it with these people?   - we've used the same insurer for about 5 years, with the same conversation each year reducing the (increased) renewal quote by 10-15%.

It's a perfectly useful thing to do to make titles across the top of sheets and that kind of thing.

I wasn't making a value judgement. Let those cells do what cells do.

Frankly, I'd far rather make a table in Excel and paste it into a word document than try to make a table behave itself in bastarding Word.

Merging cells plays absolute havoc if you have to a) reference them or 2. copy and paste them. At least it did when I last used excel in any sort of anger.

A quick FISE tells me there are 750 million Excel users, therefore there's >750 million expectations of the ways Excel should be used.

To quote from the glossary of an only slightly sarcastic document I wrote last month:

Quote
Excel: A functional programming language masquerading as a piece of accountancy software that's commonly used for managing databases.  [goes on to explain how $application uses Excel files to populate its internal database]

Nothing per se, provided both/all involved have agreed on a safe word, the story they'll give to the triage nurse in A&E if it goes slightly wrong, and a site clean-up/escape & evasion plan if it goes really wrong...

Oh, wait - you were talking about spreadsheets, weren't you?

In which case, there may well be some very niche spreadsheet-based pr0n involving utterly filthy macros somewhere on the web, in accordance with Rule 34.
