On a 43km ride through the forest today I managed to stay upright and keep going for several miles in deep, loose, dry sand (my pet hate), bounce over quite a bit of rough singletrack ditto (the wild boar had been digging it up, rooting for grubs and, er, roots), and even score a personal max speed on the MTB. I'm still a long way from being a rufty-tufty mountain biker, but I'm pleased about my new-learned sand skills (it's just confidence to keep going, really).

  Excellent news.  I  love the rough stuff..... that is, until I fall off.

More sand than mud here, at least until the autumn rains.

I might as well say it before someone else does -

this thread is useless  without pictures.  ;D

Look at what I'm hoarding.

Each one being 18.9litres, I reckon that's enough to float 189kg?

I presume you know the freezer trick? Put them one by one in the freezer for an hour or so, with the lid off, so they fill with very cold air. Then quickly put the lid back on. As they warm up the pressure inside increases and they self-inflate slightly.

Went back to the forest, by sheer coincidence did almost exactly the same distance despite not getting lost this time, and managed to ride through even more loose sand, over more and bigger boar-diggings, and even increased on yesterday's max speed! And I went in to the shop in the village on the other side of the forest (the entire village is about five houses, a forester's hq, a shop, two large ponds and a stork's nest on top of telegraph pole) and ate a choc ice.  :P

Each one being 18.9litres, I reckon that's enough to float 189kg?

10*18.9litres makes 189kg neutrally bouyant assuming 1kg/litre for the water. Note Salt and other contaminants can change that.

Also if you get water on your raft, i.e. supported by the raft above water level, then that weight is part of your 189kg.

therefore to be on the safe side I would want ~20% extra bouyancy. so get a couple more bottles or reduce your weight to ~150kg.

Me and the trike weigh a combined 120kg. I've got 60kg of extra buoyancy, but sadly the bottles were picked up by the water company when I was out of the office :(

My back and leg are pain-free for the first time since early May.  I feel like dancing and singing, but I'll do my colleagues a favour and save it.
OTOH, I will do the exercises like a good boy.

We may be going tandemming tonight.

Not me & Mr L.  That's a different kind of relationship.  No, Butterfly will be stoking. :)

Hurrah!  Is it all fettled and shiny and just as it should be?  We want pics!

(I suspect that some will especially want pics if Butterfly goes for the red frock, hair flying in the wind and gigantic joyful grin look, as modelled on the fixed t'other day!)

I can't guarantee her choice of outfit, nor that I can get a photo of her in motion, given that I may be busy with the front end of the machine.  But she has collected the tandem from Corridori, who have kindly, and relatively inexpensively, overcome my difficulties with the modern world, and she has agreed to go for a ride tonight.  All these things are good

If I were to find myself sharing a tandem with that vision, she would very quickly find herself in the pilot's seat.  You lucky lucky boy.

That's very good news.
