One of the good thins of audaxing is that you can ride in many countries in the same style You know from home. So here a thread to collect information on these audaxes, especially the smaller ones (the large ones merit special threads).

Are there any significant differences in France?

Was thinking of doing a PBP qualifier there, which I know is allowable.

Randonees there seem to have a starting window of 1.5 hours or so. Why is that, and do you still get the full time whenever you start, or do the faster riders just set off a bit later and have bit less time?

First rule of cycling: you always seem to start with a hill.

It has to be an hour, but no allowance for a later start.

It's a rather different list than from 2008, since Ivo only included his own rides in the Netherlands. There are rides in Zwolle next year.

Some of my personal favourites:


March:

You can do two 200s in one trip. Niederrhein starts in Wankum, which is about 3 hours by train from Maastricht (faster by car since it's a rather complicated rail journey). Nierrhein has a flat course arond Eindhoven with an optional stop in America to eat french fries.
My own 200 is a bit lumpyer, first 100k is through the outskirts of the Ardennes and the northern Eifel, peaking at 600m at the Fringshaus. The return leg is via the valley of the Maas, quite flat and windy.
All Orchies and Tournai rides are advisable, great bunch of people and well designed routes. Tournai has good railway links to Brusels and Lille. Orchies is just an hour cycling away from Tournai.

Another good combination weekend at the start of april. The Essars ride is allready a classic in Northern France, especially for it's 4th control where nearly everyone sits down for an hour for a lavish meal. The Béthune ride will be a bit more X-rated but good folks there. Essars is about 10km north of Béthune. Béthune has good railway links with Lille
Another double the weekend afterwards. Bomérée Cyclo starts it's lumpy ride from the outskirts of Charleroi, The Leuven 300 starts just north of Leuven. The Leuven 300 has an scenic middle part leading to the highest point of Belgium (nearly 700m).
My own 300 crosses the Leuven course twice but enters deeper into the Ardennes, calling at Bastogne and Huy. It'll be a real challenge for someone on fixed, a large part of the middle section is through endless forests around 500m of altitude.

Orchies usually starts it's 400 halfway the morning so you can start well rested and pootle on with the peloton. French riders usually loose quite some speed at night so you can profit from that and stick with them
or, when you lost contact with the peloton during the afternoon you can dust up some stragglers.
My own 400 is rather easy (for my standards), staying in the flatlands for the first 300km. Only after the control at Jedrik's mother inlaw some serious hills are encountered.
The Dunkerque 400 was a pleasant surprise to me this year, nice group, good scenery and a wind swept return from the Bay de Somme
The Leuven 400 is in the area where my 400 last year ventured to, to the Bouillon region. Very scenic and lumpy.

As said earlier on, Tournai and Orchies are allways advisable for their good crowd and nicely laid out routes.
My 600 is a new course heading for Luxemburg and a scenic and lumpy first day. The night section is through norhtern France. Halfway the night you'll descend to the valley of the Meuse and follow that for a few 100kms. Optional use of the well asfalted bikepath directly next to the river. From Namur (attention GPS users, near the Citadel your GPS will lack some precision) the route leads via a former railroad to Hoegaarden (don't drink too much of the local brew) and returns home via the old Teutonic Order castle an hour's cycling away from the finish.

Arvid has more knowledge on the flatter northern rides so he can give some good advice here.

Indeed it's a scenic and pretty route. The last 50km are flattish, roughly half of it on lit streets. Most riders return in the dark. You know the startplace .

I don't know how you are travelling then. The Wankum start is about 12km from the Venlo railway station, and Venlo-Maastricht is about an hour. (So I'd say it's about 1h40m)
There is talk the start location will not be in Wankum, but in Geldern, and that will make the travel to Maastricht considerably longer.
From what I heard the Wankum 400 will go to the Ardennes, and not north as this year.
The Wankum 600 is the lumpiest ride I know(I haven't done any rides in the UK except LEL, fyi), I failed it twice now. So it's on my wishlist for next year, but I'm not sure yet if it fits in my schedule, since there is a need to finish a 600 to be allowed to some ride starting in Paris in August.

And you're not even including the Mur de Huy!

From what it looks Zwolle didn't change the 200 and 300. Both are flat by British standards, and the organizer is even trying to put hills in them.
The 200 goes into the "hilly" Veluwe area, the big foresty area in the middle of NL, and ends with the dyke from Deventer to Zwolle, on the westside. It's a nice ride. The literal translation of "Bossen, Bulten en 'n Diek" is "Forests, Bumps and a Dyke".

The 300 is the same area as the bit that was at the end of the first round in the 1200(not the same route though), from Germany to Zwolle. I think there are about 5 hills, and the highest is in Germany at 150m or so. The organizer rides a velomobile himself, so all the hills/bumps are quite gentle.
I haven't ridden the 400 or 600 in Zwolle. 400 says "Drenthe" so I guess that's pancake flat. The 600 goes to the Sauerland(up to 500m elevation), so there is some serious elevation there. It's off in the same direction as the 300, but 300km onwards.
Zwolle is one of the bigger train hubs in NL, so very reachable by public transport.

From the rides in Lohne, Germany, I only know the 400 from 2009. I asked about the routes from the 200 and 300 last year, and they went to NL, so expect pancakeflatness. The 400 went to the Sauerland, mostly using larger roads to get there.

Zoetermeer is also easily reached by train. I haven't done any rides there.
Ossendrecht is harder, I did a 400 in 2009 there, and I rode 22km from the Roosendaal railway station to the start. The 400 went to the Ardennes as well, and includes the Mur de Huy. There is quite a long flat bit to get to the Ardennes though, and back as well of course.

The Ossendrecht 600 usually goes to the Ardennes. A flat daytimesection where you reach the foot of the Ardennes in the early evening. Nighttime section throught he Hautes Fagnes and the high Ardennes, passing a.o. the Barque Michel and Baraque Fraiture. Good lights are definitely an advantage during the descents here. Just before exiting the Ardennes there's a control at a farm. Return leg via some larger roads through Belgium. I reckon it as one of the eassier 600s I've done. That at least if you're a confident descender at night.

Brussels is a great base for randonneuring. You have the Brussels (St. Gilles) series and about a dozen different other starting spots within 2 hours by train (and early trainservices leaving/passing Brussels also in the weekends). Nearly all Belgian brevets are easily reachable and a number of foreign events (Ossendrecht, Maastricht, Orchies and Dunkerque).
