Title: Thames Path Meander, Mk VII - 22 July
Post by: Andrij on 05 June, 2017, 09:56:09 am
The details ...

The route is roughly 50-60km, mostly off-road (not of the COR variety), exploring along the Thames.  We start from the Southwark Needle (south end of London Bridge, junction with Duke St Hill) at 10:00, then head east to Woolwich, stopping for a pub lunch along the way.  After a ferry crossing we return to the City, following the north bank, including a tea stop.  Along the route I’ll bore regale you with loads of facts historical and trivial.  Due to a combination of the never-ending development of London and my continued exploring there will be bits never before seen on one of these rides.

The route can be done on skinny tyres.  We've had all sort of bicycles on the ride, but tandems and trikes (of both varieties) may have some difficulties.  If a trike or tandem is your only option then please let me know when you confirm your participation.  There are diversions which can be used, but I'd like to know in advance so I can make suitable arrangements.

I don't want to scare folk away, but it is only fair that I am completely honest about the route.  There will be:
* gates
* bollards
* steps (not full flights)
* kerbs (up and down, not many)
* cobbles (lots)
* uneven paving stones
* busy roads (less than 1km in total)
* NCN paths
* points of interest (many)
* photo opportunities (lots)

You can read about the previous versions of the ride here (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=20770.0), here (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=51439.0), here (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=52183.0), here (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=61079.0), and here (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=98139.0).

If you need to hire a bicycle I recommend using On Your Bike (https://www.onyourbike.com/london-bike-rental.php) as they are closest to the start/finish.  You should book in advance, and PLEASE be there as the shop opens it's doors at 10:00.  Maybe you'll be lucky and they'll open a few minutes early.  If you are hiring please be sure to tell me so I can make arrangements to collect you from the shop as well as plan to get you back before they close at 18:00.

= = = = =

I intend to run the overnight version again this year (2015 (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=92612.0), 2016 (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=98736.0)), but I’ll start a separate thread for it.

I've sent a link to this thread to a friend NotOTP (one of the proprietors of Hertfordshire's Finest Hotel, who has actually encountered a few YACFers out in the big blue room on occasion) who has just discovered the joys of boris-biking bits of his commute.  Funnily enough, when he commented elsewhere on the internet that he was rather enjoying his discovery of That LonDon on two wheels my first thought was 'Oh!  He'd _love_ the TPM ride!'.

Is it Boris-bikable?

Yes, if he doesn't mind the expense.  The vast majority of the ride is not covered by the London hire bikes - last docking station on the south side isn't all that far from the start, and they don't reappear until roughly half-way back on the north side.  Other options are to borrow a bicycle from someone, or hire one.  There is a place that hires bikes around the corner from the start - they open at 10:00 and close at 18:00.  It's long enough to do the ride, but it does mean I'm watching the clock to ensure I get him back to the shop on time.   For the record - it is cheaper to hire a bike from the shop than use the London bikes.

This could be a good way to introduce Mrs. road-runner to YACF as well as seeing parts of London I don't think I have yet seen. Hiring bikes from the shop you mention sounds good.

Would be great to see you again, as well as meet the Mrs.

When I run my next recce I'll try for a more accurate measurement of distance, as well as consider a break place for you.

I recommend hiring from On Your Bike (https://www.onyourbike.com/london-bike-rental.php).  For the record: I have no connection to the shop, but they are reasonably priced and closest to our start/finish.

I don't mind folk from outside yacf - I often advertise this on CC as well.
But I will start to worry if numbers hit a dozen and keep going.  It's purely a logistical issue.  We managed with around a dozen and a half once, and I'd never want to go over that number.

Andrij, we have reserved bikes from On Your Bike (https://www.onyourbike.com). The shop opens at 10am on Saturdays so allowing time for collecting and paying for them and getting to the start point, maybe you can delay the 10am start by a few minutes.

The ride actually goes quite near to the shop.  Instead of you working your way up to the start, only to retrace your steps, we will pick you up along the way.  By the time we make it down there you should be ready to set off.

*bump*

Our lunch stop is booking up rather quickly.  If you intend to come on the ride but haven't said so, please speak up ASAP so I can make any necessary adjustments the booking.
Like last time, we may be asked to order our meals in advance.  Watch this space...
Title: Re: Thames Path Meander, Mk VII - 22 July
Post by: Andrij on 16 June, 2017, 09:17:55 am
We're still OK on numbers for lunch, but the sooner I make any adjustments the better.

Also, the pub does not require us to order in advance (this time around), but I may ask you to do so as it will speed things up at lunch.  The pub's menu changes frequently, so I will contact them the Monday before the ride to check if they can confirm the menu for the weekend.  If so, I'll let you know and ask that you confirm your choice by Friday.

For those who have never been on one of my rides, please send me your mobile number via PM, and I will reply in kind.

Houston, we have a problem...

Pub is fine seating a group of 12, but can't do more than that.  I asked about splitting us into two groups, but no-can-do.
Are two people willing to volunteer to not sit with the others and be random diners?

This also puts me in mind to push us so we arrive a bit ahead of our booking, especially if it's a nice day - otherwise those not seated with the group might struggle to find a table.

Sorry about this, folks.

I am completely relaxed about pub lunch - really not an issue. I just fancied doing a nice ride - I can happily sort my own refreshment out! No problem at all. In fact I think you would prefer if I sat well away from you, and did not speak. I have audax experience and know how to stare into space, steaming quietly.
Seriously - do not worry, and do not fall into the trap of feeling you need to host. Unless you are charging a fee in which case I expect full value for money and will post a full and frank review on tripadvisor as soon as I get home.

I'm looking unlikely.
Friends on the north Kent coast beckon.
And I currently need to escape Londres.
It'll involve less pedalling....
In the event that that changes I'll let you know.
Hope you all have a fab ride.

I'm looking unlikely now as well, although I am still counted among those trying to attend, excess quantities of STUFF and minimal quantities of time look to be conspiring against me.

Recent posts duly noted.

I have written to the pub asking if they can confirm their menu for Saturday.  We don't need to order in advance, but I'd like to try.  If that doesn't work, we'll at least not have to spend lots of time looking at the menu.

I will, within the next 48 hours, check my records for mobile numbers.  If I don't have yours you'll receive a PM.

On a related note, I will be running the overnight version of this ride some time in September.  I shall try to set a date by the end of this month.  Once I do, a separate thread will be created.

Andrij, there's a chance The Boy will be joining us, though the lure of his bed on a Saturday might win. He's fairly civilised, house trained and has done this ride a few years ago. We'll fend for ourselves in Thee Pubbe if we take the size of the group over that in your booking.

On the train as planned. I am dressed for summer. It isn't as warm as I like it to be.

Are you all going to wave at me and adamski as you cycle past? I might pop down to say hello if I know what time you are passing through.

Yes!  I'll drop you a line as we get to the Isle of Dogs, or earlier if needed.

Gah - looks like we will be elsewhere now this afternoon.

Have a great ride!

I am sitting here as the sky empties, looking through the window. I think it should reach you in about 20 minutes or so - good test for the waterproofs.

Ruthie got spectacularly dirty on this ride, we all got spectacularly wet....

Wettest I've been on a bike since Wing last year, at some stages pedal strokes had my feet underwater.

A couple of pints wit Andrij & I'm now on my train home.

I really enjoyed that, my first forum ride in a long time. A thoroughly agreeable bunch of forumites it was, some familiar and a few new faces including Ruthie. It was a pleasure to ride with you all.

My companion Rie had never been on a ride of this sort before and it is a measure of how well the day was planned and led that she thoroughly enjoyed it and would happily join us again. Thanks to Andrij for all his considerate ride leadership, and thanks to Tim for patiently checking for anyone dropped off the back of the peloton ;-)

However, that weather. I did check my various weather apps beforehand. I did note that it would be somewhat cool. I did see that it would be wet to some degree. And I did spot those little lightning shaped symbols. But I failed to put them all together and make clothing choices in line with the pace of the ride. Thus, after the most thorough drenching I have had in some time, by the time we crossed the river on the ferry I was feeling seriously cold, as was my co-rider. We bailed at Pontoon Dock station on the DLR. Sorry Andrij!

It really is a fascinating route. It got too wet for me to take photos with my phone once we got underway but here are a few from near the start:

Great ride, shame about the weather. Another one who wasn't well-enough dressed and got quite chilled, so also bailed out via the DLR at Pontoon Dock; quite a few other soggy cyclists on the DLR to Tower Gateway. Last year we seeking shade from the sun!

Great to be with old friends and meet some new ones. Possibly the first UK ride with two Japanese girls called Rie!

Thanks to Andrij for organising it, and those who travelled so far to join in.

Have you all smelled your bicycles yet today?

Ours smell. It is reminiscent of the smell on Factory Road outside the Tate and Lyle plant.

I also learned why an Arkel Tail Bag comes with a rain cover. Next time, I’ll remember to deploy it sooner.

No you won't.  That's why shower-cap technology is a crap way of waterproofing luggage.  Even really nice luggage from the likes of Arkel, Radical and Carradice.  :(

I think my Carradice would have coped much better, even uncovered. It certainly would if it had been oiled in living memory.

As well as the eau de treacle factory emanating from my bike, as I was sitting here a few minutes ago my rear light (Smart Superflash - early model) which I did not switch on yesterday, decided to switch on of its own accord. A change of batteries confirmed that it is 1) dry inside and 2) dead.

Proper Carradice doesn't use shower caps, does it?  Their cordura stuff (which does) is exactly as un-waterproof as Arkel's.

The trad Barley-type canvas seems to work really well and has no need of shower cap technology. I’ve no idea about their more modern stuff.
