Gift suggestions for a runner/walker
« on: 08 August, 2017, 02:21:26 pm »
Mrs T42 has a birthday coming up.

She was a runner until recently, when she decided that walking was more her thing, although she does still use running kit and throw in the odd jog. Distances vary from 5 to 25 km.  I've bought her a spiffy new rain jacket and a load of books, but I'm looking for the kind of odds & sods that would be stocking-fillers at Christmas. She already has a drawerful of HRMs, GPSes etc and a very nice camera, but she doesn't get on all that well with tech stuff.

Any ideas for small nifty items would be most welcome.

I am a useless gift buyer, but recently received a Fitbit which I love.  It charts steps, runs and can be linked to a tacker too.  Good luck.

Buff?
Lightweight runners' gloves are also useful for summer walking.
Socks? (how about https://www.injinji.com/shop/trail.html ? I got given a pair and like them...)
My O/H has a waterproof running cap which he finds useful.

Buffs & gloves she has in plenty but the socks look like fun and I can get them on Amazon. Ditto the cap.

Duly ordered -

Headtorch - Alpkit are quite nice for cheapish ones.
Also clip-on blinky lights. Million Mile Lights are good, as they don't need batteries, just powered by movement. https://www.batteryfree.co.uk/

Or for off-road running, mini gaiters are great. Dirty Girl Gaiters are nice and colourful. http://www.ultramarathonrunningstore.com/Trail-Running-Gaiters-s/1899.htm

For caps, I like Jackrabbit Caps. You can get custom embroidery if you want. Though they are in the US, so delivery may take a few weeks. http://www.jackrabbitcaps.com/

Not really cheapish, but Black Diamond makes a very nice runner's headlamp/headtorch with a red blinking light in back to warn off approaching cars:

A walking pole carbon fibre Leki. Spendy but worth it imo.

They have so many uses for a walker including nettle whacking, mud depth tester and a very welcome third leg when it's icy.

Thanks, all.  Der Tag is approaching so any more shopping will be local, though I might order a couple of things that'll arrive later as unbirthday prezzies.

Excellent suggestions both but alas, our dogs & the parrot stop us both leaving the house at once for any great length of time; and the missus is constitutionally unable to ride a bike. I have bought her five or six over the last 20 years, but she is incredibly nervous of traffic: an approaching car will make her start to wobble when it's still 100 metres off.  Every new bike gets a turn round the village (1.58 km) then gets put away "until I feel more like it". I've stopped trying.
