Which planet am I looking at?
« on: 06 November, 2017, 05:21:52 pm »
I'm facing north. I could Google it, but TBH, it's easier to just ask here  :P

I'm going to guess Venus. Not certain though....

Not Venus or Jupiter, as they are morning planets atm.
Facing north doesn't sound right.
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

Got to be Uranus or Saturn, but you'd have to be looking SW for Saturn or E for Uranus.

I can still see it - just. It is in the NE according to the compass on my phone.

Maybe it's not a planet. Aliens maybe?  :P

Obi Wan Kenobi: That’s no moon…it’s a space station.
Han: It’s too big to be a space station.
Luke: I have a very bad feeling about this.

I have one of those astronomy apps on my phone which is pretty ace for pretending to be clever. That's Arcturius, my dear, I'll say in a patronising way (and let's face it, my knowledge of the night sky is limited to the (a) the moon and (b) the plough and, on a good night, I might get (c) Orion).

Frankly the app would have been a lot more useful twenty odd years back when I was trying to get off with rather charming Hawaii-bound practitioner of the cosmos. Sadly, my rather dismal knowledged of the heavens meant that I never even got close to seeing her radio telescope.

Indeed - if in doubt,  I fire up Google Sky Map and point my phone at the UFOplanet in question.

Remember when that NASA probe was approaching it and Patrick Moore began desperately calling it "OOrinus"?

You won't see Uranus, too faint. If it is bright and yellow/white in colour, it will only be either Saturn or Jupiter. Which constellation is it in, and how do you know it isn't just a bright star?

Certainly not Uranus, and the ecliptic is southerly in our hemisphere.

I heard that Uranus may currently be visible with good binox or a small telescope.

Bobb, Arcturus (in Bootes) and Capella (in Auriga) are very bright and in the north at the moment.  They would be pretty close to the horizon when you were looking.  They are brighter than planets (to me, at least).  If it was NE, Capella is likeliest.

Ta. I only assumed it was a planet as it was so bright and fairly low. Unfortunately it's cloudy today so probably won't get to see it at dusk.
