Since I managed to wreck the rear shifter on the Streetmachine[1], and the difference in cost of a replacement was neutral I figured this was as good a time as any to go 10-speed.  I've currently got a mixture of 9 and 10 speed in the fleet, so the existing chain and cassette can be used up elsewhere in in due course.

So, new shifters, three chains and a cassette.  And a couple of spare 10sp quicklinks for the toolkit.  And a new mirror and brake levers[2] to replace the ones that were damaged.  And some gear cable outer that I needed anyway.

Bah.

[1] Microshift 9-speed bar end.  This has lasted many years longer than the Dura-Ace ones that came before it, because the indexing ring isn't made of cheese.
[2] 4-finger levers with rubber grippy bits seem to have gone out of fashion.

Pair of Vaude calf-length gaiters.  Missus says they look like jackboots.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

All sorts of things to complete various projects, all at bargain prices for once:

1. A Sachs Duomatic hub for which no-one else was interested enough to bid more than £30 - I already have a rim and it will sort out the woeful rear braking of the Raleigh Twenty
2. The correct length triple-butted*, threaded Kona fork for the Cinder Cone (oh ye of little faith)!  Only £35 posted including a stem and bars which I don't want but can sell for the entire purchase cost
3. A Campag Record large flange front hub with straight-arm skewer (this is total Campag porn, in case you didn't know) for £20.  I'm sure the front-end flex of the Holdsworth, which makes it nigh-on unrideable up steep hills because of extreme brake rub, is caused by the 3-piece BHC Airlite hub.  This one should be a straight swap.

*it is a whole 50g lighter than the single-butted version.  Whoopee shit.  But it is *correct* for the frame.

Duomatic is an interesting hub.  What are the ratios, and how does it compare to the S2C?

Duomatics geared direct drive or down (76%). The modern Sturmey S2 hubs gear up 138%, which is better for small wheelers. The original S2 hubs geared down 71%.

A lot of purchases recently.
LH TA crank, TA big ring and Shimano BB for HK's Roberts
Octalink BB and pair of 9sp quicklinks for HK's Condor
Wahoo Elemnt (Garmin is not getting anything more from me)
Cateye rear light and saddle rail bracket for HK's Brompton
Cheap KMC chain for my fixed
Pair of 3/8" wheel nuts for my trike
Set of tandem cranks and chainrings to allow the single-side drive racing tandem to be converted for audax use, if necessary
Brompton dynowheel
Wheel meet again, don't know where, don't know when...

Thanks LWaB.  I sometimes curse the fact that the 1:1 ratio on my S3X being top instead of bottom.

I asked for the comparison, because I have ridden S2C twice - once Malvolio's, and once AdieSee's.  I had to resign myself to change gear every time I braked, so had to remember.

I have been tempted to change the folder's gears for an S2C (because cables), but the scenic nature of the West Midlands is making me think otherwise.

I rode a Duomatic Moulton round PBP03 and enjoyed the experience, though I should have replaced the original spokes beforehand. Six gone by the finish! There is a bit of viscous drag in the coaster hub but not too much. I think I had a 71" top and 54" low gear, which did most things (when used with flat/SPD pedals) from down to the shops to medium lumpy brevets.

Two new chainrings, including a new middle ring for the touring bike as it appears that the only thing that gave the chain purchase on the old one was the congealed grime I just cleaned off.

Sachs Duomatics also gear up from direct drive.  Whether a hub gears up or down isn't readily apparent when riding but is obvious when you have a bare hub in your hands.  I'd actually prefer it to gear down, because the sprocket size on a Raleigh Twenty is limited to 15T by chainstay clearance and the chainring is fixed at 46T.  However, on my commute I only ever use the top two gears of a 3-speed.

My memory must be off. In my defence, it has been over a decade since I rode my Moulton Stowaway with a Duomatic fitted.

A new pair of KCNC tribars for the TT bike, as I want to get my arms narrower and the Zipps I've been running for years have always had the arm pads seized in position - no wonder I got them cheap!

This gives rise to the question of what wall ornament to create with the old ones?  A clock perhaps?  How about a candlestick holder, or even a toilet roll holder as one friend suggested?  Any other ideas?

Hmm now there's a thought.

Today's order: some TRP brake levers for said bars, because the old ones had levers integrated.

So these are going to be disintegrated?

A large part of the reason the aged carbon originals are being replaced is that I'm worried they may disintegrate while I'm riding.

not cyclings stuff as such, but tools  :)

A new mains powered Dremel replacement as my old battery powered one now lasts about 5 asthmatic minutes, and a set of digital calipers, so for the next few days, if it stands still, I'll measure it.

I was going to order a couple of the Planet X phaart bleep rear lights, but there was a link on the page to a trade box of ten for £20 instead of a fiver each.

So now I've got 10 rear lights coming.
Don't ask.

No, but Argos e-mailed to say the Kona f&f are ready.

A new axle assembly for my 5700 rear hub. Stripping the old one down at the weekend confirmed what I'd already been told: the drive side cone is knackered, and no amount of fettling could eliminate the play. I thought I may as well replace the whole axle while I'm at it, as it's not that much more expensive than the drive side cone and it's always nice to have shiny new bearings. I'm now looking forward to eliminating the annoying rumble/knocking noises that have been plaguing the winter bike since I resurrected it last month.

Some NOS M536 SPDs for the Kona Kilauea.  Wasn't too bothered about them being period-correct but they were cheaper than new M540s.  Don't like M520s as the bearings go sloppy after a few hundred miles.

Will take out the bearing units and pack them with fresh Shimano green grease before riding, as they might be gummy after 20 years on the shelf.

A variety of loose ball bearings and a pair of 26x2.2 gumwall Halo Twin Rail tyres so I can make a start on the new commuter/tourer project I picked up last week.

And here it is. £17 of 90's steel in surprisingly good condition.
