Kent Invicta 100km Grimpeur/Hilly 50km 14th March 2010
« on: 11 January, 2009, 09:59:45 pm »
As entries are starting to flow in it is a good time to mention the Kent Invicta 100km Grimpeur 1700m of climbing around the North Downs from Otford or the single lap Hilly 50km on the same day 850m of climbing.
Both starting at Otford Church Hall opposite the Bull pub. I reccomend the great value of the 100km ride, buy one lap get the second one free.

Is that the weekend straight after the Hilly 50 of Simon L3 fame?

Can my knees handle both?

No Stu's Satan's Simon's 50 is Feb 14th I thought

definitely go for the free extra lap; not only will it qualify you for the GdS but you get to finish with the final climb up Yorks Hill this year  ;)

Now a Google Map drawn of one lap.

Grimpeur on Google map

OK that is three attempts at linking to the map and it shows the whole of the UK, how do you link to a google map?

As you've found out, you use the "Link" button on the top right of the map and cut and paste what appears in the little window.

Reasons to enter this:
  • I live very near to the start so easy to get to and back from
  • the Grimpeur will go towards my GdS attempt
  • it is an excellent route

Reasons not to enter this:
  • I am only too aware of these hills and I don't like some of them
  • if I put together my own nightmare route around Sevenoaks it would pretty much be this one* (however I intend to cycle worse than this in 2009)

Entry posted today for Grimpeur  :)

* to make it more challenging add Toys Hill from South to North and Cotman's Ash Lane.

I didn't make this.  Hardly slept last night, was all dressed, bike in car, drove for several hours, got into a fine mess and had to turn round to head home.  Now after a long drive I am home and going to bed.

A thousand apologies.

Thanks to FWN  for another great edition of the 'Invicta'.

I arrived slightly later than I would have liked but was ready for the grand depart along with a good many other riders with bikes ranging from carbon jobbies to tandem trikes and a Brompton type thing.

Saw a number of familiar faces at the start and on the route including Robin Cousins look-a-like Simon B and Cyklisten & Bez from San Fairy Ann CC.

Yes, thanks Steve and everyone who helped for a very good event.

As PatC mentioned, a wide variety of bikes and glad he confirmed the tandem trike sighting - I thought I'd imagined it.

That was Mark Brooking and his daughter on the tandem trike.
Mark is a Willsden CC member and a strong rider, Lynn was riding solo with them she was his tandem partner in LEL 2005.

Glad you all enjoyed it anyway

Many thanks to my helpers, Brian, Karen my missus and daughter at Otford, Peta at Sevenoaks Weald, Daniel, Rob, Justin and Peter in the pub at Underriver and Vic and Heather on top of the ice box that was Exedown hill

hello, people planning on doing this again this year?

I was thinking of entering as my first ever audax. In preparation I did one lap of the route on wednesday.... very hilly! just a warning that some of the lanes are in a bad state too , more like a mountain bike route in places!

this year, will the climb up yorks hill be on the second lap? please say no!

The route sheet says Yorks Hill climb is on the first lap of the 100km course and on the 50km route too.Its the uphill climb out of Otford on the first lap also.At least that gets the worst bits over first! Please could the organiser John Warren tell us how many kilometers or miles from the start on both laps his new information controls are situated. No clues on route sheet.

Yup. I've sent my entry off - this will be my fifth time, IIRC. Unless it's only my fourth. Not quite sure. But I do know that it was also my first ever audax, and a very good choice it is too!

IIRC the infos come at the top of Yorks Hill and the top of Exedown.

Tbh, I always find One Tree Hill worse than Yorks. And Yorks being at the end of the first lap means Rowdow is at the very start...

Last year there was only one at the top of Yorks Hill at 8km - all others were checkpoints. Previous year was at top of Exedown c. 9km both on the downhill direction.

Hopefully the new info at Bough Beech will be obvious on the day.
