It has a nice cinematic look to it.

What was it shot with?
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

Hi Lee,

great that you like the look. The film was shot with a Sony FS700 and a Canon C 300. For a lot of shots we used prime lenses, especially at night.

Cheers

Michael

Would you repost here with shopping details once it's out?  Amazon have nothing. Unless I'm being dense...

We're looking forward to seeing this. There were so many cameras around on PBP that it will be interesting to see how the jigsaw puzzles resolve themselves. The official film should be on its way to us soon as well, with the brochure.
I remember meeting one of the main characters in the Bar au Coin in Fresnay-sur-Sarthe in 2007, about 1,000km into that very wet event. I was down to some pretty dodgy cameras by then, and not really up to conducting an interview in German.

Hello Damon,
that´s Claus indeed, a founding member of Audax Randonneurs Allemagne.
I have seen some of your shorter clips but not your entire 2015 film yet. Maybe we should swap DVDs.  :)
I´ll send you one of ours with my address, dàccord?
Best regards
Michael

Looks lovely on my TV.

Shame I don't speak German. Any plans for subtitles, or did I buy the wrong version?  ;D

Michael has kindly sent us the DVD. The captions work fine, but the extras aren't subtitled. They are of a German Audax gathering and interviews with the main protagonists.

The DVD 'froze' momentarily a couple of times. That's something that DVD-Videos are prone to when the data rate is high. It's the price you pay for high quality images, and something you can't test for, as it it depends on the quality of the player.

The film is built around 72 year old, six times rider Claus, 36 year old nuclear power station worker Michael, and 37 year old Sina, living in Paris and working in the motor industry.

Obviously, as the makers of a similar film we're interested in the quality of the video and sound, where they filmed, and how. We especially admired the sound. The interviews on the bike seem to done from a car, are of excellent quality and advance the story.

We were surprised that the controls looked relatively quiet, apart from Dreux. Shots of dormitories had empty beds. That was a function of following two 80 hour riders, and Claus, who preferred to avoid controls where possible. Our experience has been mainly in 'The Bulge', with the main part of the 90 hours and with the 84 hour riders coming through, so an interesting contrast.

The concentration on 80 and 90 hour riders make for some confusion in the middle, as two different timelines are active, and there's a bit of back and forth, leading to a bit of where am I now?

The use of chosen subjects allows a deeper insight into motivations, which are articulated through interviews, and by Claus in a striking piece to camera while riding, that he'd probably been rehearsing all the way round. They are a number of set-piece speeches that I can only imagine from Germans. Some of the best speeches I've had have been from Germans, Brits aren't as prone to them.

It's always interesting to see how everything loosens up towards the end. The crew seemed to establish more of a relationship with the subjects, who reveal more of their essential character under pressure, and the influence of industrial quantities of caffeine. There are some especially good sequences with Sina, who clearly thrives in the environment beyond 900km. The reaction of her companions is amusing.

We've got a specialised interest, as we try to track the crew's movement in our heads, and compare that with what we did. We're waiting for the 'official' film, and then we'll have the event triangulated. We enjoyed this film, and we liked the music, especially the bits like Neil Young  towards the end.

I just watched this to see how it matched my experience. Amazing seeing all those controls empty ahead of the bulge. And an actual finish chute with people applauding!

Checking the 2019 results for the featured riders, Claus seems to have gone OOT at Fougeres on the way back, Sina beat her 2011 time by over an hour, and Michael stuck to his pledge not to do it again.

(I also didn't know before the English guy on the old bike who's briefly featured is Drew Buck, who abandoned half way this year)

Drew had a bit of a tie-in with Teethgrinder in 2015. But he was a bit overshadowed by the two Italians on period bikes. Al  lthe media got a list of 'interesting' participants, so ended up with some footage of those key figures. This time there was no such list, so attention-seekers found themselves ignored.
That attention is a powerful motivator, as Drew pointed out in 2007.

We interviewed Teethgrinder whenever we saw him on his One Year Time Trial, including PBP. That might have led to a film, but didn't.

I really like "Brevet the Movie", (like Damon's as well), purchased the Vimeo stream so I could watch it over and over, certainly getting my moneys worth. I like Claus's "speeches" about the randonneurs "way of life" and motivation, notwithstanding his 76 years it must have been very tough for him to abandon this year at 900kms. I was following him, he was an hour out of time at Brest, picked up a little but then just got slower, a real pity, 7 PBPs are a real achievement but he would have wanted another, maybe he will be back at 80 or might take up as a volunteer as he says in the movie, either way I hope to get to meet him in 2023 (for my first)

Sina was always going to do well again, starting with her A001 frame number the expectations would have been huge, hope she did not wear out too many riding companions. When the tracking site went live I looked for Michael, was sure he would go again but he must have moved onto another challenge

A good video can be very inspiring and illuminating.

I caught sight of Claus wandering around in the back of some footage that Heather took at Tinteniac. I put that in the little film about three generations of the same family volunteering.

I did have a word with Sina, and her partner Victor Decouard. In 2015 they were both riding for Cycles Singer. Victor makes an appearance in our 2015 film, in the start footage. Victor rode round in 2015 with Jean-Gualbert Faburel, who had been involved in organising PBP since 2007. Victor now has his own company 'Cycles Victor', who were listed as one of the sponsors of PBP 2019. Victor was one of the movers behind the 'Concours de Machines'.

Jean-Gualbert was involved in organising PBP 2019 initially. When I saw him on the A group start he was in 'Cycles Victor' kit, and said he had no involvement in organising PBP. Victor was quite a bit slower than Jean-Guabert  this time.
