I hope to be volunteering in Glesga for the duration. Apparently they might want me in press operations. Well I suppose someone has to open and close the cupboard door.

That, if the common perception of the press is to be believed, will no doubt be a drinks cupboard.

My Kenyan colleague has been telling us that Kenyans abroad have been asked if they would like to pick a sport to compete in at the Games. Kenya apparently puts all its sporting money into their runners and doesn't fund anything else, so they're saying to people if you would like to compete, pick a sport, and you can be in a team. They're especially encouraging Kenyans in Scotland who won't need accommodation.  ;D Mary has spent a few days deciding what sport she could do and she's considering being part of the first Kenyan Commonwealth Games lawn bowls team.  :D And I'm wondering how to convince the Games authorities that I'm eligible for her competitor's family tickets. I might have to pretend to have married her brother.
She has had further information about it, and sadly can't pick her own sport. They've asked her to do one or more of the throwing stuff events - javelin, discus, shot put or hammer. I've advised her not to pick the hammer throwing as there's a good chance she'd kill herself on the first attempt.

I'm hoping to do some safety stewarding during the games. Although knowing my luck I'll end up directing traffic at the farthest away overflow carpark from the fun stuff.....

I has been accepted as a Clydesider as well, for the Cycling. I think it's just the road races.

Mary's javelin training was going well but now the coach has left. Anyone know where we can get a javelin coach from?  :o

Our tickets have arrived!

Ours arrived about the same time. I hope the weather is good on the Sunday as we are at the early session for the hockey then have the rest of the day free, so a walk around Glasgow Green and The Peoples Palace will be nice.

I saw the baton last weekend: it made a special stop for the group I was cycling with. 8) (I managed to keep out of shot. ;))

Not planning to go to any of the actual sports things, because I'm not really into it. I will go and watch the road race, though, because it goes up the hill at the end of my road so it would be silly not to have a look! :)

Went to the opening ceremony first dress rehearsal last night. Very damp, some ad libbing, some stand-ins.

Lots of secrets not shown. Flag bearers were introduced as 'flag-bearer 1' etc..

Very kitsch tartan and shortbread. Very different to the Olympics and much shorter.

They did not appear at the rehearsal. They had a Ska band, and the signer did a rather groovy air guitar and sax along to the music. Annie Lennox and John Barrowman are the leads.

It looks a lot better on TV than at the rehearsal but the atmosphere was great.

Lots of wee references that are hard to spot - the Jack Vettriano sketches and so on.

Blimey.  Rod Stewart is still alive.
I was half expecting him to say "Nice to see you.  To see you, nice."
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.
