Planning to, with rough plan to ride in from berwick over the friday night.
If that weekend is the same as the following the LNER timetable isn't set yet, which is a bit of a pain.

Well, it's a looooong way for me!  ;)

I may well, the last train to York is just after 11pm, from the station about 5 minutes from the hotel. I could just ride home afterwards, mind, this is AUK after all! :-D

Thanks Helly.

I'd like to go this year, location is appealing. But I hope I can get train tickets for under £140 when the next week's timetable comes out.

[Suspect Londoners will get £25 tickets as usual. I'm not bitter !!!
At least the engineering doesn't affect Crosscountry trains from Oxon ... ]

Form live on new site;

Initially thought it was google forms and miffed by the lack of a branch for the hotel choice...

BACS transfer so can't pay until I'm at home with my doofer...

Looking at some of the weekends where advance tickets are available.

You can get £40 return to Thirsk from London or a £47.50 return from London to Northallerton.  As with the quirks if you try and get a ticket just for a return journey to York so you can ride a bit further, it will cost £59.  Despite the fact the other tickets change at York and you can walk out the station anyway. £10 single London to Newark Northgate which looks about perfect for a dinner dart.

Will await the train tickets being released for the reunion weekend and see what prices come up.

I looked at train tickets from 'ull the following sunday for my return home.
I doscovered I could get a ticket from 'ull to Leu/x/ars for about 180 quid
I could get a ticket from York to LEuchars for about 85 quid
Then realized I'd probably have a 21 quid OPR  from Edinburgh anyway...
York to Edinburgh was 30 quid on an XC with bike space...
So I booked myself for 35 quid on that York to edinburgh train with bike space, it continues to aberdeen via Leuchars.
ull to York seems to be 20 quid if I can't be arsed riding it.

I have booked and paid for a shared room at the Golden Lion as it's nearer the station, I don't have wheels and don't want to travel between venues. (It's also cheaper but that is not the main issue!)

I don't yet know how wheelchair friendly the Golden Lion is; Street View shows steps at the entrance...

(My bank account has details from previous years)

Use [SURNAME MEMBERSHIP NUMBER] as your payment reference.

Somone else made the booking on our/my behalf and did not read the form..
TBF is  does just appear never to be recovered again

There is  IIRC level access from the rear and a wide level way through from the street under the building.
'straightforward lodging'  on Gmaps = basic.

I have not yet ascertained if there are:
Level or lift access to bedrooms
Suitable toilets in the bedroom

I will do some phoning.

I know (from the hotel website) that Allerton Court has these but travelling between sites really does not appeal.
I can use a normal car but transferring is a hassle. I've no idea about cabs in Northallerton and would expect most AUKs to have had a drink or two...

Golden Lion is old, rambling Listed Building, without lifts and all bedrooms are upstairs.
Function suites are wheelchair-accessible.

Allerton Court has suitable bedrooms BUT

I still don't really fancy having to travel after a convivial evening.

Hmm...

I have decided I want to go. This means staying at Allerton Court and somehow rebooking.

It's ¾ mile between Golden Lion and Allerton Court.

cogitating trains; there is a single midday affordable one on Grand Central (who seem to be providing the entire service North that weekend due to having a non electric fleet) everything else is more than the cost of a weekend away  :(

After Dinner Dart would have to be to Peterborough....

Cheapest train from London I can see is £70.70 return.  But that involves three trains, a long journey time / waiting around at stations, and I need to get to London first and then get back.  Fuel cost of driving return from Hertfordshire is £53 (approx), and straightforwardly up the A1 till turning for Northallerton .  There a super direct service to Northallerton at 2 hours 16 mins on Sat morning, that gets there 8:53am.  But the fare is prohibitive. Is that early hours train really that much in demand? Noticed LNER advance fares aren't out for those dates yet.

Edit - looks like there are extensive time table changes planned the weekend of the reunion. Hence the uncertainty and probably why LNER advance fares are not out yet.

that's the fella, never been on their trains I think they are Adelante (ex GWR) if that helps, can't find a picture online.

Can't believe a town the size of Spalding doesn't have a train service on Sunday!

Their social media accounts have their uses; got a reply on the nature of the bike space. Guards area / van and bikes stay horizontal.  Their new trains will be the same.

Planning on taking a recumbent I haven't built up yet.  Wheelbase will be similar to road bike but obviously different shape and those vertical dangly spaces probably wouldn't work.

Now to ponder.  Tempted to book the same one.

I opted for Selby a couple of days ago as well - was the only half-reasonable ticket and could get a bike reservation, but going up Friday and back Sunday evening - still need to craft an after dinner dart that will end up there, or just cop out and take a more leisurely, direct route.
Title: Re: 2019 Reunion
Post by: Phil W on 20 September, 2019, 12:10:09 pm
Right booked on Sat 7:27 from Kings Cross to Selby, gets in at 9:25am.   That ticket was £16 with a bike reservation.  Will take a spanner in case need to unbolt recumbent seat to fit in the space. Hopefully it'll all fit no issue, given it's a guards space.  Certainly on Virgin trains recumbents fitted just fine in the space.  If anyone gets to see the bike space (on Hull trains) ahead of the reunion weekend I'd be interested to see a photo.

That will allow me to have a nice ride up to Northallerton rather than dashing to get there for the evening meal etc.

Now to look at the reverse journey.
Title: Re: 2019 Reunion
Post by: Phil W on 20 September, 2019, 12:23:16 pm
Ticket booked for 1510 on the Sunday, direct back from Selby. I can get direct to my home station coming back but not going north.  Set down only.  I'll be nervously watching the guard as we approach...

So that should give enough time (on Sat or Sun) for a little excursion into the North York Moors or the Wolds.

So about £51 return including my ticket into London.  That's more like it.

Hi Phil - I used a Hull Train back from Howden for the arrow earlier this year, and from memory, it was a 'dangly' arrangement for the bike space (although I was pretty tired, so may not have remembered very well). No idea if there are different types of Hull Trains stock or if there was a different / better space elsewhere on the train - I just went where the guard directed me.

Post by: Phil W on 20 September, 2019, 01:46:46 pm
Thanks their social media reply said horizontal in guards area but we will see.  Worst case is I'll have to unbolt seat for it to fit in dangly area.  I haven't built the bike yet, so I'll pay attention to how long it takes to bolt the seat on, when I do.  Just don't lose the bolts....

They are also using other stock with bike space, not sure how big, we came home on a old hst125.

Will check bike space next week , book on hull trains again and report back.

Would any kind person volunteer to be my room-mate, personal assistant and wheelchair pusher for the weekend?

I will be staying at the Allerton Court as only they have wheelchair-accessible rooms. (I need to arrange an upgrade as I've only paid for GG so far but MG knows my situation.)

I don't mind if my room mate is male or female and Allerton Court have confirmed they can arrange their accessible room as a twin (thankfully)!

AN Other taking the train from the London direction with me can share my 30% Railcard discount.

Please send a PM.

HULL TRAINS UP DATE.
they are currently using class 180 trains on most services,  you hang your bike up , seems to be a fair bit of room so phil you should be ok, if your really lucky you many get a service with a old hst 125 train( they currently have 2 on loan) these have a good bike space( can get a tandem in no problem)  staff member informed me the new trains with a very small cupboard for bikes are due in the new year.

Should you need to contact them , i have found there customer service to be far better then any other train company.

Lots here about Trains. How about cycling there?

My plan is to leave (poorly) wife with Sister in Ruddington Notts and have entered 2 x 200 as DD rides. I have gps routes just neatly over 200km with S/F Ruddington if alone; my routes allow for varying route, returning via Harrogate where I lived for 2 years and quieter main road traffic on Sunday.

If there are any others DD-ing from Notts, W Bridgford would be a suitable rendezvous. Plan to ride Fri & Sun. Anyone in Notts area with similar ride thoughts, could combine. Still need to book accommodation in Northallerton and regularly checking booking system. I note YHA at nearby
Osmotherley now closed (for Winter?).

PM me or email for my route thoughts: stephen.poulton@btinternet.com While willing to welcome local knowledge for better routing!

Golden Lion was cheaper town centre olde worlde HQ.
Allerton Court is pricier modern place, further out but only place with wheelchair-accessible bedroom, so I'll be staying there.

I would really like some kind person to 'volunteer' to push me + wheelchair places as I can't push myself (and I don't trust powerchairs).

Here is the updated itinerary for the weekend...

Friday

Friday arrivals from mid afternoon (3 o’clock) both hotels http://www.golden-lion-hotel.co.uk/ (http://www.golden-lion-hotel.co.uk/) and https://www.allertoncourthotel.co.uk/ (https://www.allertoncourthotel.co.uk/)
Meals at Allerton Court on Friday are in a restaurant if you wish to partake 6-9pm and the Golden Lion 5-9pm (menus on website) NOT included in your stay and Allerton Court residents are welcome to eat at the Golden Lion. If anyone is getting close to the time cut off, text Mark on 07957684081 and I’ll try and sort for you.

After 9pm Friday: We have a demo app that I believe may be of interest to some of you based along the lines of an advisory/perm brevet card
After that if people are up for it we potentially have a couple of short films (not exclusive to the reunion but always a good focal point)

Saturday

Saturday Breakfast is served at Allerton Court between 8am-10am and The Golden Lion between 8am-10am.
Those wishing to ride Sat, I would suggest departure time of 9ish especially if riding the 100k+ routes

Local riders have planned the following routes and it will be up to individuals to ascertain not only which ride they wish to do, but to download GPX if they wish and to find the appropriate ride. At the reunion we have not traditionally had leaders. I will leave sign up sheets for each ride at reception Sat am so we have an idea who wishes to do each ride :

72km (easy) Thirsk, Topcliffe, Kirklington, Excelby, Bedale - pubs cafes and 20km back to Northallerton - route : https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31415910 (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31415910)

120km same route as above  but extended from  Thirsk into the Wolds - route : https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31425006

)

A dirty 50km You can have stops at High Paradise Farm (http://www.highparadise.co.uk/tea-rooms.html) and the Rusty Bike in Swainby (https://www.facebook.com/therustybikenorthyorkshire/), both decent cafes. The only offroad is the long stretch along the Drovers’ Road and down to Cod Beck Reservoir, then a rough bit near East Harsley. Nothing too strenuous, apart from Boltby Bank (but you turn off before the top) - route : https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31404264 (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31404264)

On-road 50km With stops at Kirklevington Prison Cafe, and the Beeswing pub in East Cowton. Just pleasant lanes, but anyone who fancies a bit of A-road bashing can short cut down the A167 to Northallerton if they fancy. - route : https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31404294 (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31404294)

2.30-4.00pm The afternoon has AUK presentations, one on restructure of the AUK
regulations, one on the progress of the IT Refresh project, and another
on our financial situation. In the Troubadour Suite, Golden Lion. Coffee, Tea and biscuits will be available.

5-6pm Guest Speaker ‘Ian Walker’ with short questions after, in the Troubadour Suite, Golden Lion

7 for 7.30 Hot Fork Buffet in the Troubadour Suite, Golden Lion. We have bar facilities in the suite, followed by Annual Audax Trophy Presentation and after dinner speech by Ian Walker.
After this people may wish to socialise, have a few drinks but we will keep a couple of films up our sleeve for those who wish to enjoy them!

Sunday

Sunday: Departure as and when after breakfast you wish.

Anyone cycling to the gathering via the Don Valley? Can anyone report on the Don crossings that may be OK by bike. The National news concentrates on the Fishlake/Stainforth area for flooding and the Gov Flood warnings show orange strips around the R Don, with a few red (flood) zones. My plan is to go N from Bawtry to Thorne and Selby using A614. Only awkward section seems to be a short Red zone ~300m? on the Selby Road after Thorne. Is the road above the field level so might be dry or only have a puddle type of flooding?

There do not appear to be any Red warnings West of Doncaster, so wonder if a route through Rotherham may be wiser??

I know it can all change after Thurs threatened rain but any local factual info appreciated.

I do have the alternative to drive but the DD is a strong incentive to attend.

Finally plotted my ride to the reunion.  Subject to floods hope to get to Northallerton by mid to late afternoon tomorrow.  There appears to be a red area south of York on the flood maps. Looks like will have to keep west further south. Now where did I put my waders?...

Did anyone else ride to / from?

My 200 today was nice until just after Barnsley when it became very damp and cold; but finished in time for my advance booked very cheap train back to London

I did both the Dinner and After Dinner dart.

Ride to was a little damp but only bad towards the end. Ride home was dry.

Was good to see old friends and meet new, and catch up.

Yes indeed! Thanks to all for very good company. Not least, to the people who set up the weekend and ensured it went well.

(On the down side, I fear I missed meeting oggy.)

Are the awards/results/trophies up anywhere? I'd like to see how far off the "pace" I was.

This thread is disappointing.  I was looking forward to tales of epic fording by Plucky Cyclists determined to get to the reunion on time...

I did not think tales of The Azuma Without A Bog were edifying...

First time in 25 years of membership I have won anything and I was caught out and didn't go.

I had a section of off road about 10 miles out from Northallerton.  I'd done the route on cycle.travel which is usually quite good and showed a Tarmac cycle track for this section.  (Must look at osm source data and correct it) It turned into farm yards, floods, mud, green lanes and punctures. I escaped by a bridge and hiking to a lane. The puncture was rear on tubeless. The sealant had dried out and therefore didn't seal. The spare tube I carry for when the tubeless fails (it hadn't for last 5 years), had been fitted to my new recumbent build. So no tube to sort it out. So I rode 4 miles or so on a flat rear till Andy Clarkson and some other VC167 members came past. In response to a passing alright I asked after an inner tube. With tubeless tyre carefully checked to embedded debris, donated inner tube fitted; I was then able to proceed at normal pace to Northallerton.

So there you go, but I wouldn't call the above epic, just frustrating so close to the destination.

Ridiculous amounts of alcohol consumed with members of Four Corners Audax.  I was on the cider which is not my usual drink but I've developed a recent liking for the cloudy variants.

The straggler and I rode through one flooded rode, as we travelled up on Saturday we missed the worse of the weather

again not very epic.

Does anyone know if the person who fixes website problems was there?

And if they are now recovered enough to fix login problems?

Thanks; I was actually hoping to find the recumbent award/trophy, which won't be in the tables and doesn't seem to be on that page - do you happen to know where that would be listed?

Rode down from Berwick with Iroiromono and a near on 11pm start, A1 was shut with diversion via my route to Wooler, thankfully night traffic wasn't too bad, it started raining at Wooler.
Alnwick McDonalds was visited with the dregs of a pub closure to annoy us for the duration.
Onto the coast at Amble and a decent blast with a tail wind arriving at the Tyne Tunnel at the back of six... Yes we were horribly slow.
Too early for Greggs at Jarrow so kept going on to the town in tyneside for a morning Greggs and odd shaped sausages, the things nearly rolled out my roll, what's wrong with good old flat Lorne?
before Chester Le Street and therefore Durham was entered, traffic was getting shit, the cycle tracks that existed were shitter.
Got confused in Darlo and then got to Northallerton at the back of 11 whence we were able to check in so I had a snooze or 2 between things.

Not epic just a bit shit.

I recall 40 points was the winning recumbent points total for last season.

I put in a claim for recumbent points award, I've heard nothing back so assume I wasn't in the running.

It's under Results > Annual Awards > Velo Speciale (https://www.audax.uk/results/annual-awards/velo-speciale) but not been updated for 2019 yet...

Ah so they are, shame my total points is incorrect, but my fault as my first claim was for 40 points then amended to 52 when PBP points were added, I guess the amended claim slipped through the net.

Well, that makes me feel a lot better about abandoning the ride that would've taken me to 42. Congrats!
