Non cycling winter jacket
« on: 14 April, 2024, 02:31:32 pm »
I'm looking for something for non-cycling winter wear.  Ideally hood, knee length+.  I would like something that could be warm with the right layers below it, but not something that can't be worn in April due to being snow wear.

Any thoughts?

I have a Mountain Warehouse jacket/coat.
It has a waterproof outer ‘shell’ and a detachable, quilted lining, which can be worn by itself. It comes down to just above the knee.
It has a double zip so it can be opened at the bottom when sitting.
It’s quite weighty overall but I’m very happy with it so far.
This is the one.

I bought it in black for the tombstone do for my Dad. It was just the job - toasty warm, adjustable and not too blatantly ‘outdoorsy’.

Doesn’t look like they do a men’s version, which is a crying shame!

I have a Rohan raincoat with hood which I can wear a padded hoodie beneath in colder weather.  It isn't as long as you express a need for unfortunately.  It's very light though and easily scrunched into a backpack.

Knee plus length isn't common but I think rohan do a shell waterproof jacket that's long length. It's called rainshadow I think.  Being a shell waterproof it is thin for warmer months but if sized right you can layer up underneath.

Most waterproofs and the 3 in 1 waterproofs with a zip out insulation layer are at most cover your behind or to the top of your legs where water will run off it. There's bit many longer outdoor waterproof jackets around.  Other than the Rohan one I think craghoppers used to do one.  Mountain equipment do some of the longest hiking waterproofs and there are long berghaus ones too but not stocked in many places.  Garynors in Ambleside and online sell longer berghaus versions but they're nowhere near knee plus length more like top of thighs at most.

Hope this helps.

Army surplus parka / trenchcoat? Usually quite long, though may not have a hood. Some have a quilted liner, can remove for warmer weather.

Or you could be a dryrobe wanker...

Something like a long Seasalt coat, or a Driza-Bone? Or Didriksons?
(Seasalt have an eBay outlet if looking for bargains)
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

I've got a Didriksons parka (the 'Donny', I think), which ticks all the boxes apart from length: it's thigh length rather than down to the knees. But it's a great coat, highly recommended.

Pedant note:  A "jacket" is defined as waist or hip length - not knee length.

Knee length would be a "coat"

I'll get my coat/jacket/gilet  ;D

Surely a little heavy for the task? Perhaps a covert coat would be better?
