Looking for a night away camping with a couple of mates. Ideally we want a small backpacking or cycling campsite. I don't like big soulless ones where there is noise all night
I'm from Essex. Ones from London and the other Brighton so somewhere ideally within a couple of hours of those. South Downs seems obvious and a strong possibility.
Any recommendations please.

The Yew Tree at Chalvington (not the Arlington one - they're within a few miles of each other) is nice.
You can camp in the pub garden and round the edge of the cricket field. Very nice pub grub. A couple of brick built outdoor loos are left open all night and I've never had them run out of toilet paper. No showers though.
Can be busyish if they've got a wedding on in their big marquee.
Normally nice and quiet, meant to be no music etc. Did have one occasion where a large group were noisy all night but that was the exception.
Near Eastbourne/Brighton/Lewes.

YHA South Downs allows camping on some dates, it was peaceful when I stayed and you get access to the hostel bike store, showers and canteen if you want them.

The Cock at Broom has a field at the back for camping. You’d have to check availability. Very nice pub, but I’ve not camped there.

Loves Lane, near Ashwell, is a CCC site, which I have used and I can vouch that it is very quiet. Ashwell is a short ride, or a longer walk, from the campsite and has a couple of pubs where you can get a meal.

A pedant replies: yes, there are 3 pubs in Ashwell but, when I was last there, it was not clear to me that the 3rd offered food; I know for a fact that two of them do.
