I have discovered that the skew bridge in my photo above is even more odd.  Only half is a real skew arch, with the characteristic helical brick courses in the roof (the engineering behind a skew arch makes my brain melt, but let's just say that a conventional arch would fall down).  The other half of the brick has conventional bricklaying.  The portals at each end aren't parallel!

This has been done in order to accommodate a road junction above and I suspect the skew part was added years after the original, since the houses above are different ages.

Very droll.  Except that "Neuf" means "New" in this context.

Oudenarde, and a perfectly normal road bridge

until the bells ring, the lights flash and the barriers descend ... and the bridge begins to rise

until it's risen enough

the barge passes through

everyone waits patiently for the bridge to come back down

and then carries on as if nothing had happened

I like that bridge, it reminds me of a story book I had when very little about a Dutch cow called Henrijke(sp?), who fell in a canal and floated along seeing all sorts of amazing things while placidly chewing away.

I'm curious as to what those 5-lamp traffic lights are at the bridge - what are the 'extra' lights for? I presume they flash to warn that the bridge is rising - but then why the standard three? Or perhaps the whole lot is different?

Newly refurbished, Polam Lane Bridge.  I was surprised to learn it's a listed building.

sort of OT. I've just bought a book on bridges. History, pictures and a bit of info about construction.

It came in one of the book seller box things that get hawked about offices. £4, bloody good deal.

Not posting a great deal, by my standards at least, at the mo due to lack of pooter and the not-very-smartphone being distinctly sub-optimal for significant browsing and hunt and peck on the not v responsive touchscreen making posting a bit challenging, but I have to say I still think this is The Best Thread Ever. Makes me :) every time I see the "new" flag. And want to go and visit them ALL!

And another one:- it drops to allow trains over the Canal Du Midi. I don't think it's used much.

Oooh! A good question. I think I'll pop it into Guess the Place.

I'll post the answer back here when someone has it.

A contribution from an absent forumite (who appears in the picture in a juvenile form), with the question - "Can anyone confirm where this is?"
