I must be a really hopeless case. Manhunt last night on ITV1 was really enjoyable, despite being about the hunt for Levi Belfield. Martin Clunes always came across as the affable buffoon from MBH and as a result I avoided his stuff.

This is different. Part 2 tonight at 21:00

Seconded.  We're 2 episodes through on ITV player.  It's very watchable.

Sorry for this being after the fact. Stewart Copeland on Drums, BBC4. Well worth a watch on iPlayer...

And nest week it's Tina Weymouth on Bass.  I think there's a guitar one too.

Thanks for the heads up. That one will definitely be worth watching.

It is. Herbie Flowers on the overdub for the baseline on Walk on the wild side was a revelation and strangely moving.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Yep, really good. I’d never even heard of Carol Kaye before so that bit was educational. And Herbie Flowers talking about Walk On The Wild Side was indeed quite moving.

Loved the story about how the Marcels came to record Blue Moon as well.

The only disappointment was that because Tina Weymouth was presenting it, there wasn’t enough of her actual playing.

They probably learnt that lesson with Stuart Copeland.  ;D

Who - being sherious - did a good job on his episode. He actually let people talk, and got interesting stuff out of them.

[I've NEVER listened to drumming properly, so perhaps I have a tin ear for these things? But I think they could have laboured the basics a bit more, just to ... err "drum in" the key concepts e.g. which IS the backbeat?? etc. I still learned a lot, mind :)

Agreed.

Also disappointed that it pretty much ended with New Order, as if nothing interesting happened musically after that (by contrast the bass one took us right up to Dizzee Rascal).

Did like the bit about the dude who invented the bass drum pedal though.

I would have liked to hear more of Tina's playing simply because she is responsible for some of my all-time favourite bass lines*, but that said, one of the most interesting things about her programme for me was finding out more about the people who influenced her, such as James Jamerson.

Try listening to Led Zepplin, when I was younger I thought they were all about Plant and Page but actuaĺly its the rythem section that made them so interesting.

We've had drums and bass yet no one has mentioned Fleetwood Mac.

IIRC there was a brief clip of The Chain in the bass ep.

Has anyone mentioned Tin Star??

Tim Roth showing just how amazing he is, if given a decent script.

(but shame on the relevant TV companies - running trailers for SERIES TWO during ad-breaks???  Oh my daze ... )

Guitar one to be presented by Lenny Kaye who, apart from playing with Patti Smith, also compiled the indispensible garage rock, er, compiliation "Nuggets".

I found the bass one a bit flat for no reason that I can really put my finger on (except for, perhaps, its utter failure to mention Lemmy).

And why would it ? The point of this series is follow the development of each instrument in popular music not to be a "famous drum breaks" or "my favourite baseline" compilation. It's the same reason "The Chain" didn't get mentioned. I love Lemmy but his bass playing didn't break new ground nor was it the nest example of a genre. As he oft repeated himself Motorhead just play rock and roll - loud (and it was f**king loud, several Motorhead Concerts in the 80s left me with ringing ears for days, wouldn't be allowed now).
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Enjoyed the Bass with Tina Weymouth. Bootsy Collins was quite bonkers. Also enjoyed James Jamerson.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

If you like your motor racing, this is worth a catch-up on iPlayer.

The Defiant Ones on iplayer. Story of Dr.Dre/Jimmy Iovine and how they became billionaires (literally). I am not a rap music fan but could see how Dre had an ability and once in with NWA his career took off. But of course there are guns/drugs/girls/car crashes along the way as well as lawyers and music biz shenanigans. Luckily Iovine/Dre are kindred spirits and Iovine can talk the talk.

Also the Michael Portillo Railway Journeys. It pains me to like this as I dont like him but he keeps his chatter low key and goes to some interesting places. Currently the series has gone from Ireland to West Coast of Scotland and some stunning scenery.
