It seems we are about to have a sprout shortage as cabbage moths have devastated this years crop. Some farmers have lost 50% of the crop.
We may be reduced to importing foreign sprouts for Christmas !
-
Good riddance

There is a God

How tall is Paddy McAloon?

And there was much rejoicing.
-
We celebrate Christmas by living without green balls.
-
Ooh. I suddenly feel more cheerful about Christmas this year.
-
Oi, I like sprouts!
-
I bought some this morning, intending to feed my son and his friend. Son likes them and apparently they had broccoli at his friend's so it seems like a safe assumption. But then I was too busy with work deadline to cook them.

Don't they come from Belgium already?

We voted for Brexit to take back control of our own sprouts. We won't stand for EU brassica inspectors dictating supplies of British flatulence!

I microwave most of my vegetables. They get a few minutes on full in a lidded Pyrex dish. Lack of time for vegetables is not an issue.

I didn't even have time to wash/peel the outer leaves off/otherwise prepare them. I hardly even had time to push the buttons on the microwave! It's not usually like this...

Oi, I like sprouts!
You can have my share of them for forever.
-
I don't dislike sprouts but don't like them enough to buy despite partner's dislike, so we do without.
We'll have carrots, parsnips, peas and Mediterranean vegetables.
I don't think we'll suffer.
-
It would be fair to say that no matter how profound such a sprout shortage turns out to be, it will not affect us in the slightest.

It's genetically determined, apparently:

Ha, that's cool :)
Gotta be roasted for me though, too many boiled to death in childhood....
-
I like sprouts (and brassicas in general) but like a lot of foods they don't like me so much. Lots of tootin'.
I too have the fear of overboiled on the outside yet still semi frozen on the insides sprouts fed to me as a child. Like the world's worst baked alaska. Steamed or roasted for me.

As revealed exclusively by Mr R Zilla the other day:
Immigrants are going to steal Christmas (http://m.plymouthherald.co.uk/immigrant-moths-are-threatening-steal-brussels-sprouts-off-your-christmas-dinner-table/story-29946939-detail/story.html#U5480jjqMBLyss7s.99)

Please tell me that's a spoof. :hand:

It's 2016. Nobody can tell any more.

I'm pretty sure it's real. It's just reality is a parody of itself.

Sprout shortage looks like (social?) media hype, or perhaps a regional issue (ISTR it was one of the Channel Islands that had suffered crop devastation).
Meanwhile, I'd gathered venison (sadly not muntjac) from the market yesterday. Casseroling needs a more robust stock than our current reused cooking juices, so I put trimmings from yesterday's sprouts, plus a few other bits of veg - leek tops plus brassica stems & a few celeriac roots - into the pressure cooker to see what emerged after 15 mins. I was more than a tad cautious, having suffered overcooked sprouts at a young age and vomited (Mum got the message & gave me raw sprouts thereafter ;) ).
Surprisingly, the stock diddn't taste of brassicas. It'll need some reinforcing to build up to "beef stock", but extra onions, a bit more browning before casseroling & a bit of chocolate malt (not bitter like black malt) should improve the balance.
Meanwhile, sprouts are ready trimmed for a quick meal ;D .
